I Just commented on another thread and was so pleased to see a few MN from this area! Im a bit surprised tbh, I'm not sure why haha.
I wonder how many on MN do live in Pembrokeshire?!

Oh Polyethyl interesting you've back to back bookings too!
Send them Newport way, we need the trade, badly...

Have a couple of friends in Nevern, both female, would laugh if one was your cousin!

We've three local celebs now, all of which i've met while at work.. I made Griff Rhys Jones laugh, gave Jerome Flynn the eye, and ran away from Rhod Gilbert because i went a bit gaga (big crush, but his wife is lovely)

Rodent01 · 09/07/2020 18:47

Feel free to tell me to rack off as this is a locals thread, but we are hopefully coming this way to camp in August. We’ve been shielding since mid March as I’ve got cancer, but as long as I’m allowed, we are coming with a 3 and 7 year olds - what’s good to do / places to walk / tips in general?!

My ultra running OH is literally salivating over the costal paths, but forgets that the rest of us need to plan stuff too!!!!

Lollypop4 · 09/07/2020 19:11

My Dp runs a pub and B&B on Goodwick, (shameless plug for the Rose and Crown)
& its filling back up with B&B bookings, which is fab!!

Rodent01!
You will love your break here!
Apart from the wonderful beaches all over, I reccomend Folly Farm , just reopened, its indoor play area and old time fair ground, aswell as outdoor rides are closed still but so many animals to see, farm and zoo inc lions and Giraffe and black rhinos-with the baby rhino also out!
There is also Manor park, I personally prefer Folly Farm though.
There is also Heatherton but I think a lot is at mo shut off, the Dinosaur park too but again main rides shut off! The theme park here is Oakwood .
I would say North is a lot quieter than south , so Areas of Fishguard, Goodwick, Newport and cardigan are less touristy than Say Tenby, St Davids, solva BUT you will love wherever you are. All the attractions above are more towards The south.
But my kids love a bucket, spade and net to rockpool with over everything!

Rodent01 Get your OH to check re. Coastal paths as some sections are still closed at the moment, and i'm not sure when they'll re-open.
There are little buses that will drop off/ pick up at various points along the path, so most catch a bus to Poppit at St. Dogs, then walk back to Newport.. Or one of the buses further South and walk back up, depending on where you're based. Timetables are on Richards Bros website.
Whereabouts in Pembs will you be?

Lollypop4 · 09/07/2020 19:17

@Jellykat, My sis in law went to cardigan school.., I bet we really do circulate the same friends!
You've met so many famous people, I can say I once played football with Jerome flynn but my real clain to fame is , whilst he was down from Eaton, on a college trip, I played table tennis against Prince William !

OP posts:
Jellykat · 09/07/2020 19:40

Oo table tennis with Prince William definitely trumps my fleeting encounters!!

AlessandroVasectomi · 09/07/2020 19:52

Spent a few days there early in 2019 on an anniversary break. We loved it! Although it was January the sun decided to shine and we spent a lovely couple of hours on a beautiful beach, the name of which escapes me (sorry). On a less sunny day we visited Tenby and had the beach to ourselves, but we could imagine how different it would be in high summer. I’d love to have a summer holiday in Pembrokeshire

Rodent01 · 09/07/2020 20:05

Wow, thanks everybody!!! We’re near Whitland (probably a giveaway!) - v excited. The kids would probably happily spend every day on the beach, I just love to explore when we get places!!! They’re pretty good at walking around places, especially if there’s an ice cream at the end so want to visit as much as poss! (Socially distanced, obvs)

Table tennis v Prince W is a pretty good claim to fame!

Jellykat · 09/07/2020 20:39

Bluestone and Oakwood it is then Grin
Yes to Folly farm, and Newgale beach is lovely..

If ok to travel a bit Newport beach really is great, you can park up and walk along the estuary (presuming path is open) to wide open expanse of beach and rock pools at other end. (and theres an ice cream kiosk)
3 places i work in are mentioned here Grin plus lots to do-

Lolimax · 09/07/2020 20:57

I walked past Prince William and his minder in the Spar years ago and was staying with mum the weekend Rhod Gilbert got married- he didn't invite me though!!
Sadly apparently I used to play with Susie Lamplough (sp?) on the Parrog but can't remember as she was a bit older than me.

LostInWales · 09/07/2020 21:08

That writer is having a moment if they think you can see Ireland from Newport Beach surely? Much as I've looked I've never seen it from Poppit, maybe they were confusing it with North Wales which sometimes seems to come much closer than normal on clear days.

Llys Meddyg is my all round favourite restaurant. Got a promise with my friend that we will be there ASAP for a cocktail and food when we can.

I've been to church with Prince Charles and Camilla if that counts, not quite as intimate as ping pong but it's the best I've got.

Polyethyl · 09/07/2020 22:12

They rebuilt an iron age fort at Castell Henllys, where children pretend to be Celtic warriors and paint themselves in woad.
Cilgerran Castle. Cardigan Castle. Pembroke Castle. Manobier Castle.
Dyfed Shire Horse Centre - (it's not just shire horses. My daughter adores that place.)
Searching the Presellis for blue stone so you can pretend you are building your own Stone Henge.
Beaches. Old churches. Coastal Path.

Polyethyl · 09/07/2020 22:16

How could I forget Fishguard Fort!
Where three retired gunners fired a single blank round at the first French invasion ship, causing the whole fleet to turn tail and flee to Strumble Head!

(The local Army Reserve unit still has the battle honour, "Fishguard" on their flag.)

Gordonsgrin · 09/07/2020 22:53

@Rodent01, L live v close tonWhitland, there are lots of very nice quiet places to visit. Laugharne has some nice cafes, a castle, estuary walk. There are some lovely local beaches, Amroth is prob the nicest close one in my opinion. PM me if you need any local intel! You will have a fab time but bring clothes for all seasons!

Jellykat · 09/07/2020 22:54

Cardigan Castle makes me smile, of enormous historical relevance, but if kids want a Castle in the classic sense, they're in for slight disappointment when they see the house Grin.. However, i wouldn't dis the place as i sell my stock there (don't ask what i make, that would reveal me for sure) AND they had some cracking gigs there last year!
The former owner was in a nursing home with my granny, boy what a character! Grin

Rodent01 · 09/07/2020 23:05

@Gordonsgrin thanks!!! Clothes for all seasons are certainty part and parcel of camping, I wouldn’t trust August as far as I could throw it to provide sunny weather!!

Thanks for the tips and to everybody else, just got to get past 1 more oncology apt and hope Covid stays back in its box, then the proper planning begins!!!!

Lollypop4 · 10/07/2020 00:20

Ping Pong had its downfall tbh, A) I don't look like Kate, not that he had even met her at that point B) I was underage...!
We played football with him too and he did a swim as part of the fun weekend around Goodwick breakwater too
( I purposly joined Seacadets for the sole reason of meeting P Will, after that week I left haha!)
Oh yes def bring all weather clothing!!!

Ah, this is bringing back memories of running down Jackson's Way between my DGP's on Glan-y-Mor Rd and ours on Plas-y-Gamil Rd.

Who was the artist who painted pub signs and lived up the hill behind your DP's pub @Lollypop4? I remember visiting him with DF.

Lollypop4 · 10/07/2020 08:34

@MinnieMountain, Maxwell jones.
Passed away now but his wife still lives there, not many of art on the local buidings anymore though , shame

@HPLikecraft are you on North Gower?

HPLikecraft · 10/07/2020 09:42
@HPLikecraft are you on North Gower?
Ha, good guess 😊

Yes, in Gower. Gorgeous here too of course, and not too far from Pembrokeshire either. We’re very lucky!

MinnieMountain · 10/07/2020 13:52

I heard @Lollypop4. DF went to his wake. It's sad that his signs have been painted over.

Monst3ra · 10/07/2020 17:55

I love Pembrokeshire. My mum lives in Newport and my nana lives in Broadhaven so we get to visit often. My mum also has a caravan in Llangwm near the estuary which is my DCs favourite place to be. The best beach for me is Abermawr.

I've not been back to Pembs since February and I miss it so much.

MonsteraDeliciosa · 10/07/2020 20:12

Hoping to go to Pembrokeshire as/when/if camping and caravanning restrictions are lifted. Love walking on the coastal path and all the beautiful beaches.

MillieMoodle · 11/07/2020 16:16

@Rodent01 another vote for Folly Farm, it's perfect for children, we go every year. You need to book free tickets via Eventbrite at the moment which give you a date and time to attend and then pay for admission tickets either online or on the day. They've got a good FB page which is worth a look. Also highly recommend the Dinosaur Park. Heatherton is expensive imo and I haven't been to Manor Park for a few years either. Not sure if swimming pools will be open but highly recommend Bluestone. Oakwood is good for a theme park day out. You can use Tesco vouchers at Oakwood and Folly Farm.
