Suggestions for really amazing films for 11 year olds

Looking for suggestions they can watch during the summer holidays but not the usual stuff. I’m thinking about films that they’ll enjoy but will really get them thinking, in an age appropriate way.

Love hunt for the wilderpeople

Also what we did last summer

Schmoana · 06/07/2020 20:31

Sorry that last one should have sIs “what we did on our holiday”

HathorX · 06/07/2020 20:45

The Help
Grease
Sleepless in Seattle
Dirty Dancing
Mission Impossible
Avatar
Anything appropriate with Eddie Murphy orJohnny Depp in.

I adored Blazing Saddles as a kid, and Tootsie - no idea how they have aged!

Zampa · 06/07/2020 20:50

Old Boys - re-telling of Cyrano de B, set in a 1980s boarding school but be careful not to download Oldboy by mistake

Son of Rambow - another 1980s school setting. Sweet and funny

Remember the Titans is great - about a football coach in a recently de-segregated high school football team. On similar lines but probably for slightly older audiences, 12 year old DS also really enjoyed Coach Carter recently

puzzledpiece · 06/07/2020 21:14

DS 11 is watching Disney's Descendants and really enjoying it

Buffthemagic · 06/07/2020 21:24

Eddie the Eagle
Uncle Buck
Edward Scissorhands
Honey I Shrunk the Kids
Ghostbusters

ruthieness · 06/07/2020 21:38

the great escape!
Calamity Jane

megletthesecond · 06/07/2020 22:11

Rear Window.
DD gave me a pitiful look and pointed out that Grace Kelly was much better dressed than me.

SunshinePeekingThrough · 07/07/2020 17:59

This is a great list

TempestHayes · 07/07/2020 18:04

The Martian.

Titanic. Even if they're not into romance it's a technical marvel and one of the last films to utilise building a massive set.

TempestHayes · 07/07/2020 18:07

I fucking hated Grease as a young kid. I spent the whole thing thinking I was about to see a film about a nerdy, unfashionable girl be accepted for who she was, as I was under a lot of pressure from friends and my mother to dress 'more girly' to 'get boys' and take up smoking and make up, and to see that's what Sandy had to do to win the day, the boy and get everyone clapping and cheering was just so depressing.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 07/07/2020 18:10

Brilliant thread thank you!

Lisette1940 · 07/07/2020 18:16

Great suggestions. I watched Big yesterday with my ds and he enjoyed that. Also Galaxy Quest

Lisette1940 · 07/07/2020 18:18

We wept with laughter at Galaxy Quest and it was lovely to watch the late Alan Rickman.

mammmamia · 07/07/2020 18:25

@TempestHayes I feel exactly the same about Grease and thought this even as a pre-teen when I first watched it

August Rush - it's a lovely film, full of music and the power of hopes and dreams with a bit of drama.

scullie · 07/07/2020 18:28

The Pursuit of Happyness with Will Smith, massive hit in our house. Sad initially but ultimately inspiring!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 07/07/2020 18:31

My DS liked:
Goonies
To Kill A Mockingbird
Warhorse
Evita
What We Did On Our Holiday

Alongside the usual Disney etc offerings.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 07/07/2020 18:32

and Smokey and the Bandit, actually. Forgot that. Not very thought provoking but a lot of fun.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/07/2020 18:35

Flight of the Navigator
Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead
Men in Black
Cool Runnings
Bruce/Evan Almighty

puffylovett · 07/07/2020 18:53

Err we aren’t responsible parents, but the kids enjoyed these..
Goon and Goon 2
Slap shot
The mighty ducks
Back to the future (can’t believe it’s not been mentioned yet!)
The Sandra bullock one where she adopts the huge black football player
The Hugh Jackman movie with robots fighting (menopause brain!)

And then for light relief with lots of foul language Blush the Santa Cruz syndicate on YouTube - mountain biking series.

Most of our choices revolve around extreme sports and they do come with some choice language which they’ve been taught to ignore!

We are currently on Gone with the Wynns on YouTube, we pretty much ditched movies.

puffylovett · 07/07/2020 18:54

Oh and they were both gripped by 1917.

colouringindoors · 07/07/2020 19:03

Green Book
another vote for Hunt for the Wilderpeople!
