Suggestions for really amazing films for 11 year olds

Looking for suggestions they can watch during the summer holidays but not the usual stuff. I’m thinking about films that they’ll enjoy but will really get them thinking, in an age appropriate way.

Another vote for both Hidden Figures and Hugo.

Think Inside Out is good for all ages.

What We Did On Our Holiday & The Lady in the Van are both good but think are 12s.

Mine were happy to watch any film versions of classics like Dickens/Austen etc.

Thanks for the thread, going to keep an eye for ideas, it'll be a slow summer!

Cool Runnings
The Truman Show

dd is 12, we have been watching, some like it hot, citizen cane, Gilda, Dr no, Hamilton, butch casady and the sun dance kid, ferris buller, gone with the wind, and sherlock.

Ohsuchaperfectday · 05/07/2020 10:08

oh yes- the new David copperfield was excellent!

EugenesAxe · 05/07/2020 10:08

Ah yes there are already a lot of Studio Ghiblis on the list; definitely agree with those suggestions.

Thinking about ‘classics’ I can definitely recommend Thoroughly Modern Millie. Really funny and good. To Kill a Mockingbird wouldn’t be a bad idea either, possibly also Jean de Florette, Manon des Sources (bit of nudity though) and Cyrano de Bergerac. I watched Elephant Man about that age. Also The Scarlet Pimpernel (an awesome film). At that age I also loved Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Slipper and the Rose.

Was The Goonies on the 50 Films list? That should be in there, and Stardust. Possibly some early teen films like Pretty in Pink? Might be some swearing; I can’t remember. You could try some cheesy films like 10 Things I Hate About You, Never Been Kissed.

Sense & Sensibility, Emma (new better than old IMO but both good), maybe Mansfield Park (themes are a bit more grown up).

If she likes disaster movies I’d look at Dante’s Peak and Twister, as well as The Day Before Tomorrow.

Strictly Ballroom is funny and great. Splash, Ghostbusters; staples from the 80s. Some nudity in Splash though.

Check out certificates obviously; I think an 11 year old would happily watch all I’ve recommended, but there might be the odd bit of swearing or sex.

Ohsuchaperfectday · 05/07/2020 10:14

Oh yes - we also watched Cyrano de Bergerac recently!

Brilliant film, which Scarlett Pimpernell? There are a few - I was looking for it . The slipper and the rose was my all time fav as a child!
We also watched the Hitchcock, Rear Window, The Birds, and Vertigo.

Id steer clear of the Elephant man - it broke me into pieces for years...it is so harrowing.

EugenesAxe · 05/07/2020 10:15

I forgot about Hunt for the Wilderpeople - definitely! It’s amazing.

A friend has also said that Jojo Rabbit was fantastic.

Clash of the Titans (original) is another classic I forgot. Also The Thief of Baghdad - haven’t watched that for years but I remember it being one I watched over and over. The effects will have aged massively I expect though 😆

Ohsuchaperfectday · 05/07/2020 10:18

The lady Vanishes is another good one.

Ohsuchaperfectday · 05/07/2020 10:19

EugenesAxe

Which S pimpernell please

EugenesAxe · 05/07/2020 10:21

Thief of Baghdad 1940 version.

scrappydappydoo · 05/07/2020 10:22

Wonder
Princess bride
Tomorrowland

EugenesAxe · 05/07/2020 10:22

Scarlet Pimpernel with Anthony Andrews in lead. Don’t know any others actually, but that film has a stellar cast list.

EugenesAxe · 05/07/2020 10:26

Actually it’s more that the three main characters are played by excellent actors 😆

Bbq1 · 05/07/2020 11:42

Be careful with The Boy in the striped pyjamas. I think it's an incredible film so thought I would watch it with my ds when he was about 9. I think the ending came as a massive shock to him as he was so upset afterwards. He's 14 now and obviously watches all sorts of films these days. He was never upset over another film before or after that.

janaus50s · 05/07/2020 11:45

Look at some older movies, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, karate Kid

PuppyMonkey · 05/07/2020 11:48

Monty Python and the Holy Grail will set any 11 year old up for life imho.Grin

TimeWastingButFun · 05/07/2020 11:54

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
I really think this is an adult film, I'm not putting my two, 10 and 12 through that one for a while yet.

I totally agree with The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. I watched it with my son when he turned 12 as I know it's a book they sometimes do at secondary school. He was traumatised by it and won't touch the book. I think it should be a 15, not a 12.

Ohsuchaperfectday · 05/07/2020 12:09

Scarelett Pimp has many many versions, really old films. I like them all.

Agree Boy in Stripped etc too old and harrowing.

Sadik · 05/07/2020 12:28

The Eagle Huntress is an amazing film, I watched it with my dd when it came out & we both really enjoyed it. It's about a 13 year old Kazakh girl from a nomad family learning form her father how to train a golden eagle and then competing in a big competition. Fabulous story, wonderful birds & horses, amazing scenery & just lovely overall. I think it'd be ideal for an 11 year old as Aisholpan, the main character is very much the right age for them to relate to. (I'm also now thinking I should re-watch it at home!)

Sadik · 05/07/2020 12:29

I'd also second the recommendation for Tomorrowland - wierd but good!

mammmamia · 05/07/2020 18:25

Fantastic suggestions thank you to all! Keep them coming!

The Truman Show was a big success - I’m going to try some of the other films that have been mentioned.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 05/07/2020 20:18

The Martian.
