Suggestions for really amazing films for 11 year olds

Looking for suggestions they can watch during the summer holidays but not the usual stuff. I’m thinking about films that they’ll enjoy but will really get them thinking, in an age appropriate way.

@pennib - not a big issue but just so you know, it was @Bbq1 you were agreeing with about Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

Enjoying the suggestions, @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz I watched The Martian with my 12 yr old son last night he really enjoyed it!

EscapeTheCastle · 06/07/2020 08:16

The Secret Garden and it's on Netflix at the moment.

NotDonna · 06/07/2020 08:32

Have any of your 11 year olds seen JoJo Rabbit? I’m surprised that’s been recommended when Striped Pyjamas isn’t. I’m not sure either are suitable viewing for 11 year olds. Essential later.
Interestingly mine all read ‘Striped Pyjamas’ in yr5/6 but I don’t think they fully understood. I’ve not seen the film version (but have seen JoJo) so I wonder if it’s harder hitting in the film as it’s more obvious. It’s easier to misunderstand the book and not fully appreciate the situation.

The Red Turtle, really beautiful studio ghibli film with gorgeous music score.

My son enjoyed Titanic recently too. One of my favorite films is The Butterfly Effect but just checked and it’s a 15.

HollyHocks13 · 06/07/2020 09:03

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a modern classic - we all love it in this house.

We haven't seen JoJo Rabbit yet but if it's anywhere near as good as HftWP, I know it will be a hit!

OP here, thanks again for the comments!

Mine have recently enjoyed the karate kid, the Mask, cool runnings and the sound of music. But I was after some more recent suggestions from different parts of the world as well. Great responses so far. Thank you

I adored The Princess Bride, fairy story but a brilliant and funny romp

ApocalypseNowt · 06/07/2020 11:22

The Princess Bride is as close to perfection as any film gets! Smile

7ofNine · 06/07/2020 11:58

Yes to Princess Bride! Very funny.

Inception
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Third Man- I know it's old, but it's wonderful, and the plot twist is AMAZING if you don't know beforehand.
High Society
A Knight's Tale

The Hunt for the Wilderpeople is an utterly wonderful film...but there is some choice language, so depends on your child.

7ofNine · 06/07/2020 12:08

Whale Rider
Pacific Rim

Windyjuly · 06/07/2020 12:26

Oh yes titanic would be a good one!

Also not film but I'd like to show dd jeeves and wooster series

irisnotadaff · 06/07/2020 12:35

‘Holes’ based on a book.

AuntImmortelle · 06/07/2020 12:44

Loads of great films here.

But please NOT The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas - the book or the film. There are actually quite a lot of problems with that book/film and I could go on for ages why, but essentially it is distilling the murder of 6 million jews, travellers, disabled people etc into the 'accidental' killing of the German boy in the gas chamber. Not to mention the complete non-understanding the main character has of the function of the camp (which would, frankly, have been impossible).

So so many better ways to learn about the Holocaust.

AuntImmortelle · 06/07/2020 12:45

PS Mine love the Princess Bride!

God I was a wreck after TBITSP. no way would I show it to my DD.

Time2change2 · 06/07/2020 13:24

To those who are saying no to boy in the striped pyjamas - my DD watched this in school at the beginning of Y6! Lots of kids watch and read this in y5/6 in school as part of history topic!

waltzingparrot · 06/07/2020 19:31

The imitation game
Catch me if you can
Julie and Julia
The prestige
Green Book

vampirethriller · 06/07/2020 19:43

Willow with Warwick Davis
Into the West with Gabriel Byrne
I used to love Legend with Tom Cruise at that age too.

SuburbanCrofter · 06/07/2020 19:52

Or Hugo Cabret (the full title is longer). Friendship, clockwork craftsmanship and care for others with an adorable (11yo?) male lead

That 11 year old has grown up and is playing a very different role nowadays Grin

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 06/07/2020 20:25

The Martian
Billy Elliott (if you don't mind the swearing)
Napoleon Dynamite
I Kill Giants
Little Miss Sunshine (may be a bit adult in some of the themes)
