Is there any point upgrading just for an extra 3 inches each?

We currently have a double bed, but it's just not big enough, especially during summer when it's too hot to be close. I'd love a super king but I just don't think we'll fit one in without getting rid of our bedside tables (which is NOT an option! They house too much useful junk 🤣).

So obviously the next option is a king size. But is it worth it just for 3 extra inches? Confused

Yes! It makes a huge difference and we feel very cramped if we go away and sleep in a double bed now.

ChickensForTheHound · 03/07/2020 14:43

A double is 135x190 and a SK is 180x200. Whilst you are only getting an additional 10cm length, you're also getting 45cm extra width!

I wouldn't change the bed for just 3 inches each but if your are in need of a new bed anyway then yes I would.

If you don't need a new bed instantly but need bedding (sheets, duvet etc) I'd buy king size then they'll fit your new bed when the times right to upgrade.

You mean an extra 3 inches each? Kings are 5' and doubles 4'6.

I agree with Zoom, if you're used to a kingsize bed, a double feels tiny, so going the other way should be noticeably more spacious.

Depending on exactly how much space you have, you could look at an Ikea kingsize bed, instead of a standard one, as those are 160 cm wide not 150 cm, so an extra 5 inches each.

@ChickensForTheHound we can't fit an SK without either getting rid of the bedside tables or having a major furniture upheaval in the room.

Selective reading there!

A king is more than 3 inches though, no?
I think it's worth it, but depends on your budget!

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 03/07/2020 14:47

Well it's 6 inches bigger, so 3 inches each.

Yes! I’ve got a king size now but going to upgrade to a super king as my kids still get in bed with me. I don’t know how two adults sleep in a double 🙈

IAintentDead · 03/07/2020 14:49

It makes a lot more difference than you would think.

Can you stay at a hotel for one night with king size beds and see how it feels. I think you would decide it was worth it.

AriettyHomily · 03/07/2020 14:50

Oh my god yes.

ItsJustASimpleLine · 03/07/2020 14:52

Any extra space is worth it especially it youre upgrading anyway. We bought a silent night bed which supports to the very edge of the mattress, something like the last 15cm, you do notice it. Its worth investigating.

BogRollBOGOF · 03/07/2020 14:52

I'm used to a king and sleep very poorly on the occasions that I have to use a double.

I might be small anf short, but I use the width as I roll around a lot in a feral postition.
DH likes the length.

EasilyDelighted · 03/07/2020 14:53

We changed from double to king and it is much better, we haven't got space for a super king either. We dithered because we had alway been fine in a normal double but I'm glad we did it.

Another thing was we changed from a slatted wooden bed with plastic storage boxes under it to a lift up divan which is higher, it has massively increased our storage space.

notheragain4 · 03/07/2020 14:56

I know it sounds really little but we really feel the difference if we stay somewhere with only a double.

lachy · 03/07/2020 14:58

Definitely. The bigger the bed the better. We can't fit anything than a double in our bedroom, but we're hoping to move soon, and are upgrading to a super king sized bed.

MotheringShites · 03/07/2020 14:59

I’d lose the bedside tables, personally! SK bed is the best purchase we’ve ever made and you could get a divan base with drawers in for the junk.

PurBal · 03/07/2020 15:01

When my brother got married my husband's biggest piece of advice was to get a king bed (my brother and his wife chose not to live together before marriage). It makes the world of difference.

Belleende · 03/07/2020 15:03

Yes yes yessss. I have a king, hate sleeping in a double now.

AnotherEmma · 03/07/2020 15:03

Do you have space for a small super king? It's 5'6 x 6'6 (171cm x 198cm). So you'd have an extra foot in total, 6 inches each.

It's a non-standard size so you'll be limited for mattress choice and might struggle to find sheets to fit. (Duvet won't be an issue as you can just get super king size.) But could be worth it for the extra space.

I like this bed, which has the option to add a bedside shelf (if no space for bedside table) and underbed drawers:
www.getlaidbeds.co.uk/wooden-beds/space-saver-beds/white-knight-wooden-bed-frame-space-saver

The other option is an EU king, which is 160cm (5'2) and a more standard size, so you'd have more options for mattresses and sheets.

FightMilkTM · 03/07/2020 15:07

If at all possible I would try and squeeze the sk in. The only downside for us is travelling now. We’ve been known to book a twin room to still get the space we’ve become accustomed to Blush
If you really can’t fit the sk definitely at least get a king.
If you sleep 8 hours a night that a third of your life in bed. Pay as much as can for that little square!

pickingdaisies · 03/07/2020 15:12

Yes it's so worth it! Like PPs have said, more difference than you'd think possible. Tbh I'm glad we don't have space for a SK, because I have enough of a fight changing a king size duvet cover!

Iwalkinmyclothing · 03/07/2020 15:14

We have a kingsize and whenever we stay somewhere and have to sleep in a double, the double seems tiny. I'd definitely say it is worth it.

Mylittlepony374 · 03/07/2020 15:15

Definitely worth it. I don't think I can overstate how much going from a double to a king has changed.my.life.

7ofNine · 03/07/2020 15:15

Haha silly- 6" extra for you...0 for anyone you share with Wink

tabulahrasa · 03/07/2020 15:17

@AintNobodyHereButUsChickens

Well it's 6 inches bigger, so 3 inches each.
Pfft.... it’s 6 inches extra for you and no difference for your other half, surely? Grin
