Is there any point upgrading just for an extra 3 inches each?

We currently have a double bed, but it's just not big enough, especially during summer when it's too hot to be close. I'd love a super king but I just don't think we'll fit one in without getting rid of our bedside tables (which is NOT an option! They house too much useful junk 🤣).

So obviously the next option is a king size. But is it worth it just for 3 extra inches? Confused

I've got a SK and I would never go back to a double.
I have a bedside table on one side and a small shelf on the other as there instead any room.

The bed takes up most of my bedroom, but I love it and there is room for everyone!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 03/07/2020 18:17

We have a king size, I hate sleeping in a double and could never go back. You definitely notice the difference. I'd love a SK but when we replaced ours recently I didn't want to sacrifice the space for bedside tables and being able to walk round the bed.

puzzledpiece · 03/07/2020 19:26

Our SK lifts up so you can put tons of junk under it. Maybe think about some built in shelves cupboards instead of the bedside tables?

We have a SK lift up BUT a tempur mattress omg the heaviest thing ever to lift but I still manage to store lots underneath!

DH has just had a measure and he reckons we could just squeeze an SK in as long as we don't buy one with a bulky frame Grin I'll have about a foot of space down my side of the bed but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make.

I'd go for an extra 3" in bed any night Grin

Seriously though, we have a king bed and love it. If you can squeeze in the super king then go for it, maybe replacing bedside units with some slightly narrower ones if needed.

Blackbear19 · 04/07/2020 15:05

Unless you are both very big people a SK is probably a waste of money and space, try a king in a hotel.

pinky987 · 04/07/2020 15:09

We changed from a double to a king and it definitely does make a difference. I said to dh we wouldn’t go back to a double now.

AnotherEmma · 04/07/2020 15:29

Honestly I really think a "small super king" (5'6) or an EU king size (5'2) would be big enough. Personally with a bedroom that's tight for space I don't think it'd be willing to go all in for a full 6' super king. Not unless you have one or more kids and want to bedshare.

We have a king size bed in our bedroom as that was the biggest we could fit and still have bedside tables either side, plus decent floor space (not loads but enough). It's fine most of the time but I would appreciate a small super king if we could fit one in.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 04/07/2020 22:10

@AnotherEmma a small SK probably would be ideal to be honest but it seems to be a very specialist size, so because of this you're very limited on style, price and where to buy one. Not to mention where to get sheets or an electric blanket. Go big or go home 😂

Lol yes Grin

ThePickleMan · 04/07/2020 22:19

I got an Ikea 160cm width - between king and SK size as I didn’t want to lose bedside tables either. It’s perfect! Obviously had to buy frame and mattress and fitted sheets from Ikea, but use a standard SK duvet to make it easier to buy duvet covers. My bed is perfect and sooooo comfy! Fits me, partner and kids in!!

Drivingdownthe101 · 04/07/2020 22:21

Yes definitely worth it. We have a king and would never go back to a double.

tillytoodles1 · 04/07/2020 22:30

I sleep in a king size on my own since my husband died . I find a double too small just for me

Crunchymum · 04/07/2020 23:27

Anecdotal here but we went from a double (12 years and 3 children. One a co sleeper) to a SK.

I'd gladly bin all my bedroom furniture in honour of the SK.

Crunchymum · 04/07/2020 23:27
  • wasnt the same bed frame or mattress for 12 years.
safariboot · 05/07/2020 01:07

If you're tight on room space then divans have a smaller footprint than frames. Not by much, but if you're looking at a 1 foot gap between bed and wall it'll make all the difference.

I wouldn't go for an obscure size. It'll end up being a pain to find mattresses in future.

SleepingStandingUp · 05/07/2020 01:24

Who wouldn't want an extra 3 inches in bed if it's on offer?

FeedMeWell · 05/07/2020 01:31

Super king is absolutely worth it. In our last house the bed took up almost the whole room but I didn’t mind at all.

AgeLikeWine · 05/07/2020 01:37

100% Yes.

‘Standard’ double beds are tiny, and every inch of additional width makes a huge difference. Buy the biggest bed your room can accommodate. You will never regret it.

caringcarer · 05/07/2020 01:42

We have to have king size be side I toss and turn all night. When it is really hot in summer I don't want DH near me if he is sweaty.

AlessandroVasectomi · 05/07/2020 06:07

We’ve just upgraded from double to king size. I had last minute nerves that 3 inches either side wouldn’t make enough of a difference and that the exercise would be an expensive waste of money. However, it makes all the difference against all expectations and we’re so glad we did it. We also went for the option where the whole bed lifts up like a car bonnet for storage and the space is massive. We could fit bodies underneath now!

iffymiffy · 05/07/2020 06:54

We have a king size bed and i can’t believe how tiny doubles now feel in comparison!

FrauFarbissina · 05/07/2020 06:59

Good idea going for the super. If you look at platform beds they're literally the width of the mattress so don't take unnecessary room. You can also get plug in lamps that go on your wall, over your bed and a small wall shelf to make up for the junk space your side tables provided

Marchitectmummy · 05/07/2020 07:00

It's beeb said over and over but it makes a huge difference. We are both slim however we would happen upon each other in the night. With a double it's like being in bed on my own.
