Best supermarket oven chips?

FawnDrench · 01/07/2020 16:11

As there seem to be far too many variations of oven chips to choose from, I am looking for your tried and tested recommendations please.

I prefer a chunkier chip, but would consider anything really.

Thanks.

Thank you all so much!

Still somewhat spoilt for choice but at least there's a bit of agreement about which ones I need to try out.

Aunty Bessies crinkle cut are really nice and cool evenly. Often on offer at £1 (and currently are!)

Impatientwino · 01/07/2020 19:10

Cook not cool!

RogueV · 01/07/2020 19:36

Aunt bessies crinkle cut

McCain Gastro Chips and Lidl - both Beef dripping chips and the Deluxe Maris Piper oven chips, all fabulous.

winterisstillcoming · 01/07/2020 19:55

My top tip for oven chips is put the seasoning on before you put them in the oven. It's a game changer. We like McCain's skinny fries and the sweet potato fries in the Asda fresh section.

BearSoFair · 01/07/2020 20:12

Another vote for McCain gastro chips. SO good.

bluebluezoo · 01/07/2020 20:16

The ones with two ingredients are best. Potatoes and vegetable oil. Waitrose are the best I’ve found so far.

The ones with long lists of batter and flavourings are grim.

Pepperwand · 01/07/2020 20:22

I am a chip-a-holic and my vote would be

McCain gastro chips. Delicious but terrible for you.
McCain home fries....the best all rounder.
Aldi skin on fries....best if you want skinny chips
Tesco finest chunky chips if you want really chunky.

Now I really want chips.....

Zigzagzagzig · 01/07/2020 20:30

The Lidl beef dripping ones are fab. They feel like a proper takeaway treat

MummaGiles · 01/07/2020 20:31

Sainsbury’s triple cooked

healththrowawayx · 01/07/2020 20:33

I haven’t tried them but Sainsbury’s has Leon’s waffle fries. The ones from an actual Leon’s restaurant are nice.

bluefoxmug · 01/07/2020 20:36

they are all much of a muchness imo.
it's more in the cooking than in the product.

the oven needs to be quite hot and the tray needs to go in the top third of the oven.
they always take longer than it says on the pack or I have a shit oven

Cocolapew · 01/07/2020 20:36

My Home Bargains always have Albert Bartlet ones in.

NannyPlumsJellyFlood · 01/07/2020 20:36

Aldi - Specially Selected - Maris Piper Chunky Oven Chips. These are the best! Like pub chips.

mintich · 01/07/2020 22:03

Another vote for McCain Gastro chips!

FrogFairy · 01/07/2020 22:55

Lidl triple cooked beef dripping chips.

drumandthebass · 01/07/2020 22:58

Another vote for McCanns Gastro chips. Best chips I've ever had

bitofasleuth · 01/07/2020 23:00

@BlueLadybird

Aldi. The ones in the green bag.
I came on to say this. Aldi champion. They are ace.

We also discovered Morrisons skin-on fries last week and were impressed.

buckeejit · 01/07/2020 23:18

Balls. I'm trying to low carb this week & now I need to go and buy 5 Bags of chips!

LadyEloise · 17/12/2020 14:48

M&S in the green box.

tinselearedcow · 17/12/2020 14:52

M&S frozen french fries.
