My partner has turned yellow and I am scared

Over the last couple of weeks his skin and eye whites have turned yellow, he also has dark urine which has not improved despite upping his fluid intake by at least an extra 2 litres a day, he is more tired than usual too. I don't want to scare myself witless and Google. He has called the GP and is having blood tests tonight.

You always have to be your own cheerleader with the NHS !

ExhaustedBeyondBelief · 30/06/2020 11:09

@TatianaBis

Are you ok Biscuit

I had blood tests at mid -day yesterday and they was back this morning at 9.30

And nothing wrong with them.

Basic reading - Hmm So rude

ExhaustedBeyondBelief · 30/06/2020 11:30

Did he see a GP or a nurse?

Did he just have blood tests or was there an actual consultation?

OP - I've asked my friend who's a GP what he would do with the following patient and quoted what you said in your OP.
I also stated his mother's history.

His response was: ?Gallstones: Liver USS, Bloods refer

GimmeAy · 30/06/2020 11:46

I've had liver US scans in the past and they do the gallbladder also - it tends to be an abdominal scan.

GimmeAy · 30/06/2020 11:50

Btw - one of the times, I had cholecystitis (never had jaundice) but had abdominal pain. Bloods showed infection and ultrasound showed up nothing (including ZERO gallstones). I was on antibiotics but infection wasn't decreasing. They said 'we know you have an infection, but we're just not sure where yet'. I was admitted to hospital at this stage btw, but I did have pain. On about day 5 they did a CT scan and it showed up cholecystitis. I was discharged after 8 days admission.

GimmeAy · 30/06/2020 11:52

PS their fear at the time was that as the gallbladder is beside the pancreas (apparently - I forget my anatomy from school) that they were concerned the infection of the gallbladder (cholecystitis) would spread to the pancreas which would have been quite the disaster (it didn't). But the medical team in hospital were liaising with the surgical team (I was under the medical team) as to whether I might need gallbladder to be removed (it wasn't and I haven't had a recurrence since).

PenelopePitstop49 · 30/06/2020 11:53

In the kindest possible way OP, do you actually think he went to see the GP?

If he is hiding a drinking problem, he may just be placating you.

You know him best, but I'd be seriously concerned here. (My uncle died from cirrhosis). www.nhs.uk/conditions/cirrhosis/

GimmeAy · 30/06/2020 11:57

Also worth noting that I was brought into hospital and admitted to Resus by ambulance and at about 4am in the morning a locum told me that my bloods were 'fine' and that I could go home. I told him that I wasn't even fit to get off the trolley, let alone make my way home (I had at that stage been moved from Resus to general A&E). Luckily my db is a doctor and told me what to ask and when I did, the doctor went off in a huff, came back with a drip and told me I was being admitted.

If I had gone home after what the doctor told me (when my bloods must have been chaotic), I would not have gone to hospital again and I quite possibly might have died - as well - the hospital said there's nothing wrong!

That is why you'll hear me ranting about my local hospital quite frequently - that and a myriad of other fuck-ups they've made with me over the years.

TatianaBis · 30/06/2020 11:59

@ExhaustedBeyondBelief

And you are?

OP’s DH’s results are not back until Thurs.

GimmeAy · 30/06/2020 12:09

They'll be back by tomorrow latest, if not this afternoon.
I'd chase the cheeky buggers. Ring receptionist this afternoon and see if his bloods are back.

bloodywhitecat · 30/06/2020 12:21

Thank you to everyone who has been helpful and supportive, I only posted because I have no-one to tell in real life at the moment and not for any kind of diagnosis but I do appreciate those who have posted their experiences out of concern for what it might be.

To answer a few questions:

Yes he did see a GP (as well as the nurse who took bloods), no he has no swelling.
Yes I do believe him when he says he saw the GP, I have no concerns he is hiding a drink problem.

IStandByJKR · 30/06/2020 12:28

I wish your and him the best of luck, and how he gets a diagnosis soon. Xxx

GimmeAy · 30/06/2020 13:16

GP friend has clarified when I asked 'So you wouldn't send them to A&E?' His response was 'Yes. Obstructed gallstone?'.

So there you go.

I appreciate you can't make a horse drink at the water, but if the DH develops pain, fever or anything else, I'd be calling 111 whether he blooming likes it or not. Stupid man.

GimmeAy · 30/06/2020 13:17

My friend is more curious about why I'm asking the question. I think he suspects I have a man-friend lol with jaundice.

PMTRex · 30/06/2020 13:20

Hopefully the results will come through quicker than Thursday- when I was itchy, pale stools, pale yellow etc they did my bloods in the morning and called me in the afternoon to tell me to come into hospital straight away.

It was obstetric cholastasis (ICP) so liver related.

Wilberforce1 · 30/06/2020 14:32

@bloodywhitecat ignore all of those who are saying you should be dragging him to A&E, he is an adult and has his own mind. My dh would be the same. He isn't sitting at home doing nothing he has been to the gp so there isn't any point in causing more tension and stress by arguing with him.

Wishing you lots of luck x

Brieminewine · 30/06/2020 14:48

In my hospital painless jaundice would be referred to gastro ?liver panc pathology
Painful jaundice would go to the surgeons ?cbd stone
The dark urine is due to the high bilirubin not dehydration. He may also have pale stools and itchy skin aswell as the yellowing of skin and eyes. All of the above are signs of raised bilirubin, the bloods will confirm this and he needs an urgent USS to determine what is causing the obstruction. Ask your GP if your hospital has an emergency assessment unit, most do. I see patients like your DH daily, we do blood USS and give a diagnosis the same day.

Lol that made me laugh, thank you. If he does get any worse I will take the ball out of his court and get him seen.

I hope you get some answers soon @bloodywhitecat. In the meantime, just in case you weren't aware, do make sure he doesn't take anything containing paracetamol.

You can't take the ball out of his court. It's his decision as an adult. If he's been to the GP and they have taken blood I'm sure that they will find out what is wrong soon.

blardiblabla · 30/06/2020 18:56

@bloodywhitecat please be careful with what @BoreOfWhabylon has advised you, in my experience that isn't correct. Since my DS was diagnosed with a liver disease (diagnosed as a baby, now 6yo) he has only been allowed paracetamol and is not allowed ibuprofen. That was both pre and post transplant. I know for certainty that this is the case from the main UK liver centres (obviously, there may be exceptions). I've had doctors argue the toss of it with me and try and give DS ibu when he's been poorly, until I got our specialist team on the phone to correct them. You would need specialist and individual advice before taking or avoiding certain medication.

Hope DH is doing OK and you get some results/referral soon.

GimmeAy · 30/06/2020 19:12

You can't take the ball out of his court

Oh yes you can if they're being idiots and are already jaundiced. Then you pull BOSS on them.

Rubbleonthedouble1 · 30/06/2020 19:38

The GP will ring if they find something wrong xx
