My partner has turned yellow and I am scared

Over the last couple of weeks his skin and eye whites have turned yellow, he also has dark urine which has not improved despite upping his fluid intake by at least an extra 2 litres a day, he is more tired than usual too. I don't want to scare myself witless and Google. He has called the GP and is having blood tests tonight.

@TatianaBis

"Who am i to say what is true"

...... You said never has a NHS blood test come back within 48 hours.....

THAT IS NOT TRUE !!!!!!

You didnt say.... "Iv personally never had a NHS blood test come back in 48 hours"""

NowWashYourHandsPlease · 30/06/2020 03:01

I live semi-rurally, I had a blood test on a Friday at 10am, the next morning, 8.30am on a Saturday NHS 111 service rang me and told me I needed to go straight to hospital for an urgent blood transfusion and the hospital were expecting me, so if anything is urgent they absolutely do contact you as soon as they know. Mine was less than 24 hours.

Good luck for your DH

IKEA888 · 30/06/2020 03:15

havnt read through but it's v v important he mentions the steroids he had.. deranged liver enzymes can be an after effect a few months after having them .
don't assume the Gp will connect

I hope he's being seen in A&E OP, I wouldn't wait to get him seen in hospital

BEANBAG765 · 30/06/2020 04:00

Please check Hepatitis. Symptoms fit.

FirstClassFlightHome · 30/06/2020 04:06

I have had tests for Hepatitis and they come back within 2 hours. The tests themselves don't take long, it's the process that takes time.

FredaFrogspawn · 30/06/2020 04:20

Hope he’s diagnosed and treated v soon. Must be most worrying. Flowers

TatianaBis · 30/06/2020 07:23

@FedUpOfChangingName

You said never has a NHS blood test come back within 48 hours.....

Nope I said “Never had an NHS GP test come back within 48 hours”.

Ie me - I have never had one.

This is just basic reading skills.

NamechangeOnceMore · 30/06/2020 09:05

I suspect from the lack of update that either the lab informed the OOH GP about a very abnormal result and OOH arranged admission, or OP took her husband to A&E.

Painless jaundice is rarely good news. Thinking of you and your husband, OP. I hope everything is getting sorted.

bloodywhitecat · 30/06/2020 09:19

Yes the GP did see him in person, he is not unwell in himself his appetite is normal, he hasn't got any nausea etc. I wish I could get him to A&E or even to call 111 but he's seen the GP and feels comfortable with that. I do think there is an element of having his head in the sand, his mum died from liver cancer and he is scared, if I push any harder he will shutdown completely so if you want harangue me about forcing him please don't. I tried last night and it just caused a row that neither of us needed.

DivGirl · 30/06/2020 09:21

When DH was first diagnosed he had the blood test on the Tuesday morning and was told to call back on Friday for results. Someone called him later that night to go in to hospital to the GP referral unit.

They don't just sit on their hands if something urgently needs to be investigated.

I'm assuming from the lack of update that the OP decided to sleep at night time, like most sensible people.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 30/06/2020 09:24

Sorry about the row OP :( Fingers crossed the blood test results are back quickly and everything is ok.

DivGirl · 30/06/2020 09:24

Cross posted with OP. Don't beat yourself up about it. I could never get DH to do anything medically either - he even discharged himself against medical advice a couple of times which was so frustrating.

If it's anything urgent they'll contact you and until then just try not to worry. I try to think of it this way - if a dog was well in themselves, still enjoying walks, still eating, still toileting, but was jaundiced and a vet said it would take a few days to investigate you'd just watch to see if there were any major changes and continue on as normal.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 30/06/2020 09:26

Hi OP this happened to my husband.
He turned yellow and felt like hell (I realise your DH feels fine).
He went to hospital, they did bloods which showed his liver was a bit unhappy (I wish I knew what it was exactly) and they thought maybe he had a nasty virus such as glandular fever which was bashing his liver.
DH thinks it was the ibuprofen he was taking for a toothache that had been going on for sometime.

Either way he recovered after about a week, repeat blood tests showed his liver getting better and he stopped being yellow.

He's teetotal and hadn't been abroad.

I just wanted to give a version that didn't end up in something scary, as most would assume if someone turned yellow.

I hope he's ok.

LucyLikesDiamonds · 30/06/2020 09:31

Gosh, hope your dh is ok, OP.

Fingers crossed.

GimmeAy · 30/06/2020 09:32

Pretty lax of the GP IMO. (I'm not a GP).

LadyEloise · 30/06/2020 09:37

I wonder did your dh tell the GP that his Mum died from liver cancer ?
I have to push my dh to the doctors.
I say to him if you won't go for me or yourself, please go for the sake of the children.

Mistymonday · 30/06/2020 10:01

My DP had this - went to hospital as he had Turned yellow with hepatitis A (liver infection). He was in over a week, on a drip etc until his levels stabilised. It is a highly contagious disease that is reportable so Public Health England called us and traced everywhere he had been/eaten. It came we thing from someone preparing food and not washing their hands (it transmits in fecal matter usually via food or sex I am told). If you live together you need to get tested and be vaccinated etc, not share towels, Be very clean at home, not be intimate, he should not prepare food. Some forms of hepatitis can be harmful to pregnant women So if you are, get tested asap. Hopefully lockdown will have limited his chance to pass it on, if it is that.

mrpumblechook · 30/06/2020 10:22

@TatianaBisit depends on what they are testing for and how quickly the hospital received a sample. Also GP may tell you to phone in a few days but that doesn't mean they won't receive the results for a few days. They want you to phone as a reminder just in case something is missed but usually they will phone you pretty quickly if they need to. Liver function tests are usually done within 24 hours even if not urgent. I'm sure if they were urgent it would be done very quickly.

soccerbabe · 30/06/2020 10:27

not an hcp but here are the nice guidelines for jaundice in adults:-
cks.nice.org.uk/jaundice-in-adults#!scenarioRecommendation:1

as I understand it he might not need urgent admission to hospital but would probably need referral to a specialist

GimmeAy · 30/06/2020 10:36

soccerbabe

From the NICE guidelines

Scenario: Management of jaundice in adults

Arrange admission for same-day assessment in secondary care if a person with jaundice:

-Is dehydrated. (DH has concentrated urine which would suggest dehydration).

DivGirl · 30/06/2020 10:39

The dark urine isn't necessarily dehydration - liver failure (in all its stages) can cause this.

The OP doesn't need a diagnosis, I think letting the people who have actually met the guy and taken his history and his bloods treat and diagnose him might be an idea.

GimmeAy · 30/06/2020 10:47

  1. I said suggests dehydration
  2. liver failure (in any stage) is a cause for A&E
GimmeAy · 30/06/2020 10:47

OP is your DH's abdomen swollen at all?
