My partner has turned yellow and I am scared

Over the last couple of weeks his skin and eye whites have turned yellow, he also has dark urine which has not improved despite upping his fluid intake by at least an extra 2 litres a day, he is more tired than usual too. I don't want to scare myself witless and Google. He has called the GP and is having blood tests tonight.

Yes Whitecat well, you've done what you can,

You can take the horse to the water etc!

Well if GP says its OK then it must be OK then;?..

Metallicalover · 29/06/2020 18:18

The bloods will be processed in a couple of hours. I would ring in the morning if he's refusing to go to A&E for assessment. I wouldn't wait till Thursday x

WithIcePlease · 29/06/2020 18:19

I had a patient who was contacted by the local hospital in the evening due to concerns about the blood tests done that afternoon and told to go to a and e asap- he had jaundice and itching - so they don't just sit on results that need action.

Personally I wouldn’t wait if I’d turned yellow. I’d be telling DH that in pretty strong terms.

user1498572889 · 29/06/2020 18:26

If it is anything bad they will ring him before Thursday.

joystir59 · 29/06/2020 18:26

Hepatitis

Onekidnoclue · 29/06/2020 18:26

What are his stools like? Do they float? Pale?

I’m sorry to say but I think this is a very urgent issue. He shouldn’t be waiting more than a day for test results. They can be done in a few hours. I think you might need to get pushy OP. If your DH isn’t taking it seriously someone needs to. The level of bilirubin build up you’ve described is extremely worrying and should be classed as a medical emergency. Good luck Flowers

FedUpOfChangingName · 29/06/2020 18:28

MIL was called that same evening by a dr from 111 as the lab had rang them and said she needed urgent hospital treatment.

They will ring you if they need to

quince2figs · 29/06/2020 18:28

OP, 3rd hospital consultant here saying TAKE HIM TO A&E NOW.
I’m not entirely sure why your GP is suggesting he carries on going to work and gets his blood results in 4 days - but I can tell you that’s not appropriate.

Multiple causes of jaundice, some serious - he needs investigating now - even if it’s “just”gallstones causing it.

Show him this post.

AlternativePerspective · 29/06/2020 18:29

You have two hospital consultants saying A&E Anyone can log on to a forum and say “do as I say, I’m a consultant.” Hmm

OP’s DP has seen an actual doctor in the real world so I think it’s safe to say that he is doing what he’s been told to do by a medical practitioner.

Meanwhile I think OP would probably have been better going to google given the amount of terrifying information posters have seen fit to scare her with on this thread.

OP, hopefully the results will come back quickly. If it is something serious they won’t just sit on it, they will be in touch sooner.

NoMoreDickheads · 29/06/2020 18:33

The doctor will be dealing with it appropriately.

Please let us know how it goes OP. xxxxx

justasking111 · 29/06/2020 18:35

Worry for you both, sure the nhs will be contacting you as soon as they can if they are worried.

CambsAlways · 29/06/2020 18:37

Sounds like jaundice to me, I have liver probs myself mine are autoimmune, I have autoimmune hepatitis had it since young child nothing whatsoever to do with alcohol, I’ve had it many many years , I’ve never had jaundice though, and mine is certainly not contagious

CallmeAngelina · 29/06/2020 18:39

Touching faith in GPs here. They're not infallible.

CambsAlways · 29/06/2020 18:44

I’m very surprised he’s going to work to be honest, I see a heptologist who knows much more than any GP, good luck to him and hope he gets diagnosed very soon, could you please let us know,

Coldhandscoldheart · 29/06/2020 18:46

@Alsohuman

At least if he’s referred by his gp it will be to a department/ward rather than a&e

Nope. Everything non elective goes through A&E. Even with a GP letter.

It absolutely depends on your region. Here GP referrals can and do go straight to specialist area. Things are arranged specifically so that this can happen.
SummerDayWinterEvenings · 29/06/2020 18:46

@bloodywhitecat

He's back from the GP, bloods taken, ringing for results on Thursday. GP says fine to continue to work with adequate precautions. He won't go to A&E and I am not sure how I could bundle a 6'2 man into the car and get him there against his wishes.
There you have it. GP says fine. If he has any other symptons -phone the surgery and take advice.
Doodar · 29/06/2020 18:47

I’d be dragging him to a&e. Good luck

Rigorousyetcalm · 29/06/2020 18:51

My FIL was diagnosed with Gilbert’s Syndrome in his 60s. It’s caused by a build up of bilirubin and manifests as jaundice. He rarely has jaundice and only tends to occur when run-down. It’s genetic and I don’t think there was any awareness of him having it until quite a considerable age. Best of luck OP, hopefully something straightforward (not a consultant but a scientist and House MD fanSmile).

TheTigerQueen · 29/06/2020 18:58

Hope it's nothing too serious.

CambsAlways · 29/06/2020 18:59

Why on earth has someone on here put even urgent blood tests take week for results, no they don’t, if urgent they will get them done very soon, talk about worrying someone

IStandByJKR · 29/06/2020 19:09

Probably still a better bet than the average mumsnetter though. What with their actual medical qualifications and experience and all.

CallmeAngelina · 29/06/2020 19:14

An "average" Mumsnetter, maybe. But 3 consultants (self-declared, but no real reason to lie) have said to get to A&E pronto.
Better safe than sorry, I would say.

kateluvscats · 29/06/2020 19:15

He needs to go to A and E, despite what a previous poster said a blockage in the common bike duct with a gallstone can be life threatening. (cholangitis or obstructive jaundice) Please don't post reassuring comments if you are unsure of the facts.

RB68 · 29/06/2020 19:16

Oh what you mean the actual consultants.

Whatever is happening his Liver is struggling.

Very dark Urine and its approaching failure and shut down - itching is the next sign seriously any doubts get to a&e - its not that we are saying he needs urgent treatment just urgent diagnosis
