My partner has turned yellow and I am scared

Over the last couple of weeks his skin and eye whites have turned yellow, he also has dark urine which has not improved despite upping his fluid intake by at least an extra 2 litres a day, he is more tired than usual too. I don't want to scare myself witless and Google. He has called the GP and is having blood tests tonight.

@bloodywhitecat

Finally some progress. An urgent letter from the consultant arrived this morning describing DP as "grossly jaundiced", he is being booked for an urgent CT scan and he's to have further bloods taken on Monday morning to check his levels for pancreatic cancer. Scary but at least we have progress.
I'm so glad they are seeing him quickly.

Make your voice heard if your not happy x

GimmeAy · 11/07/2020 12:26

Thank heavens @bloodywhitecat! Progress at least. Scary and all as it must be.

crabb · 11/07/2020 12:28

So glad it’s being taken seriously at last. Sincerely hope this turns out to be something minor. Good luck OP.

The CT scan will tell a lot. Gosh, you really got the runaround, but if you hadn't persisted, I dread to think where you'd be left.

babbi · 11/07/2020 12:35

I’m so sorry, you must be very worried.
I really hope it turns out to be minor .
Take care of both of you , you’ve been through a lot

GimmeAy · 11/07/2020 12:53

Which consultant sent it? Was it a letter to the GP from whoever had referred him or what? Just wondering how the consultant got hold of the info!

dontdillydallytoolong · 11/07/2020 13:06

Good luck. I hope you get a diagnosis soon.

bloodywhitecat · 11/07/2020 13:07

A gastroenterologist. Copy sent to GP.

Have they specifically told you testing for PC. That letter is suspected blocked bile duct?

bloodywhitecat · 11/07/2020 13:16

Yes CA19-9. Am I on trial here because it feels like I am

@TARSCOUT

Well yes, but the bile duct could be compressed, therefore blocked because of an enlarged pancreas. I‘m glad to hear your DH has an urgent referral OP and sincerely hope that the problem is something that can be rectified. Best wishes to you both. 💐
GimmeAy · 11/07/2020 13:34

That's brilliant. No sense in meeting him until the scan is done and bloods are back. Hopefully you'll get the appointment with him soon.

GimmeAy · 11/07/2020 13:37

OP, I'm on a different thread where I asked about a referral to a colorectal surgeon and two people argued black was white with me that it couldn't be a colorectal surgeon and that it was a gastroenterolist I would be seeing. I wouldn't bother humouring them. The reason I asked was how the consultant got the info seeing as you never saw one - so I see it as really urgent if they've got hold of blood tests and are referring so urgently. I wasn't questioning what you were saying at all.

GimmeAy · 11/07/2020 13:39

I'd say that the consultant saw the blood results and is thinking WTF? Why has this been left - why wasn't he referred on Day 1.

Bouledeneige · 11/07/2020 13:42

I had a gallstones problem which was extremely painful (before they took my gall bladder out) and I was told if I turned yellow to go to A&E as it could mean my bile duct was blocked. So that's an alternative possible cause.

I'm glad he's getting blood tests etc. I hope it works out okay.

MillyDilly · 11/07/2020 13:44

The consultant would have received the info from the GP referral. GPs don’t just write asking for the patient to be seen. They include the results of all tests carried out so far in order to give the consultant a fuller picture.

dogperson05 · 11/07/2020 13:45

@bloodywhitecat hope everything goes ok

So sorry you must be in a state of shock. So glad you pushed OH into going to gp and hospital.

@MillyDilly - I was referred to 'something' back in February but never received any appointment. About 3 weeks ago, I had blood in my stool and about a week ago did a stool sample thing so have been referred under the 2 week rule as blood showed up in stool sample. I dread to think how long I'd have been left otherwise. My appointment is a telephone consultation on Tuesday am.

Sadly not all GPS are on the ball. Hope all goes well for you.

Elsiebear90 · 11/07/2020 13:53

I can understand why you’re worried as it’s very concerning, one of my patients had a very similar thing happen to him and it turns out he had liver failure due to undiagnosed fatty liver disease (he isn’t overweight and doesn’t drink, so came as a shock). I’m not an expert on the liver, but it’s not always cancer or alcohol that causes liver failure. Hoping that it turns out to be some that can be easily treated x

GimmeAy · 11/07/2020 13:54

If you're not proactive about things, then you get left! It took all my energy to get said stool sample to GP (about a mile away) by 12pm last Friday. Some people are too sick with things to be to-ing and fro-ing to GPs and I really think are better dealt with in a hospital.

Blood in my poo was 24 when it should be under 10, so I don't know how bad they consider that.

GimmeAy · 11/07/2020 13:58

The OP's husband probably wouldn't have sought help at all if it were not for the OP pushing him. Primary care really should realise that. Again, in my case, I'm so blooming tired all the time that just getting to the GP surgery is a massive task for me. I'm not elderly (40's), so they just assumed I could get a mile there and back.

jessycake · 11/07/2020 14:15

Fingers crossed that it something that can be treated , what a worrying time for you both xx

aibutohavethisusername · 11/07/2020 14:32

Hope it goes well and you don’t have much longer to wait.
