My partner has turned yellow and I am scared

Over the last couple of weeks his skin and eye whites have turned yellow, he also has dark urine which has not improved despite upping his fluid intake by at least an extra 2 litres a day, he is more tired than usual too. I don't want to scare myself witless and Google. He has called the GP and is having blood tests tonight.

It was the mystery illness on an episode of House years ago. I got it straight away because of my friends. One friend is adopted so she got her relatives traced because it can be genetic.

Lisette1940 · 02/07/2020 14:50

I thought hemochromatosis too.

Lisette1940 · 02/07/2020 14:52

Is he in the 40-60 age bracket? A colleague of mine had it.

Yes, he's 55.

An in law has that. He’s 55 and found out by chance as he has diabetes type 2 and they can be linked. He’s advised not to drink alcohol and is regularly checked but lives a normal life.

Srictlybakeoff · 02/07/2020 16:48

I think people are speculating far too much here. There are many things that could cause abnormal liver function, and different patterns of blood tests can point in different directions. There is not enough information to make a diagnosis . I’m not sure of the stories of outcomes for other patients is helpful to the op . ( maybe she will disagree)

BoreOfWhabylon · 02/07/2020 16:52

Yes Strictly, I agree.

finished31 · 02/07/2020 17:01

@edwinbear

The liver is very resilient and can heal itself quickly, so you are doing exactly the right thing in getting him looked at quickly. Is he a big drinker?
Not every liver issue is because of being an big drinker!'

I know that for a fact

lilgreen · 02/07/2020 17:08

I wasn’t diagnosing and don’t think anyone was. People are just saying that they know of conditions that cause raised iron. I’m sure OP is able to understand that.

GimmeAy · 04/07/2020 06:50

Should have referred him for the US in the first place. They check liver/pancreas/gallbladder etc. during that US. When he examined him again, did he have pain just below right rib cage when pressed?

GimmeAy · 04/07/2020 06:51

Oh and is he still yellow and feeling ok? No pain?

GimmeAy · 04/07/2020 06:53

Hope scan comes up soon.

bloodywhitecat · 04/07/2020 09:56

Still yellow, still no pain, feels better for a full night's sleep.

Haemochromatosis doesn’t cause rapid onset painless obstructive jaundice.

High ferritin doesn’t always equal ‘high iron’, you get high ferritins with liver damage no matter the cause.

He needs a scan. Why are they waiting?

NamechangeOnceMore · 04/07/2020 10:05

Were his liver function blood tests abnormal, @bloodywhitecat?

GimmeAy · 04/07/2020 10:17

He needs a scan. Why are they waiting?

In fairness, the GP doesn't really sound too on the ball.

GimmeAy · 04/07/2020 10:20

I'm guessing the GP told the DH nothing and the DH didn't ask.

GimmeAy · 04/07/2020 10:22

GP should have known that whatever way the bloods came back, that he would have needed a scan. GP was stupid imo.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 04/07/2020 10:52

Must admit I'm rather perplexed at the seeming lack of concern of the GP. I think the most pertinent questions the GP should have been asked are

  1. How quick is an urgent referral for US? (DHs was 5 weeks for almost certain gallstones with severe pain - requiring codeine based painkillers daily)
  2. Assuming we aren't talking days for the UC what possible long term damage to the OPs DH could be occurring whilst waiting.

If a satisfactory and reassuring answer couldn't be given I'd be going to A&E regardless.

justasking111 · 04/07/2020 13:09

Neighbour is head of scan department for one hospital near us she has been home for weeks, the waiting list will be uber long when things get moving again. Her department is only doing urgent admissions organised by hospital consultants.

Personally if you can you need to pay for these things at the moment.

Harpischord · 04/07/2020 13:48

Has he had his blood sugar measured?

GimmeAy · 04/07/2020 18:02

We've all suggested A&E (or most of us have) but the OP's DH is refusing by all her accounts.

Meh. His call if he cares so little for his health.

When my GP wanted me to have an urgent scan and blood tests she sent me to A&E. She didn't faff around waiting a few days for blood tests to come back and then weeks for a scan result to come back.

I'll say it again - I really think the GP is not up to it in this case.

I'm not going to say anymore, but............ there's lots more that could be said.

Gottheteeshirtandlostit · 04/07/2020 22:51

It could be ages before you get a result back for Haemochromatosis - and even if that is the cause of the problem, it doesn't solve the actual immediate problem. I would be pushing to have him seen asap by anyone other than the GP.

LadyEloise · 05/07/2020 10:54

Many people in Ireland suffer from haemachromatosis relative to the size of its population.
My doctor sent me for a test ( I can't remember why ) but I didn't have it.
