Everyone watching?

Oh my God what a fantastic set.

David, the world tipped on its axis when you left us!

This is the first thing I’ve enjoyed since lockdown began. I miss live music so much.

I'm a massive fan (see my name), and I was lucky enough to be there. It was the gig of a lifetime and the crowd bloody loved it, they weren't disengaged at all! Grin. I was also lucky enough to see him a few other times, including the Glass Spider tour, the 30th anniversary of Ziggy's retirement at the Hammersmith Odeon, and when he curated Meltdown., but Glastonbury was the best.

Starksforthewin · 29/06/2020 01:29

Pinniped I started young! 1972 was the first time. My parents were really strict but I had an older cousin and I was ‘allowed’ to hang out with him. He also got me in to Supertramp and a few other gigs, all at Birmingham Town Hall.
That was it, I was devoted to Bowie from then on. I saw him at least once on every tour, including the Milton Keynes Bowl gig mentioned by another poster.
Also a few one offs, managed to get into the BBC audience for his interview with Jonathan Ross, when he also played 3/4 songs.

He got more gorgeous as he got older 😀

crashing I was at the Meltdown gig as well, at the Royal Festival Hall. 😀
That was another great show, and I am loving this thread and people’s memories 👏👏👏

You can definitely hear me whooping during one of of the tracks on the DVD, I wondered if it was me when I played it for the first time, DS was tiny and he looked up and without having context, asked why did you shout Mummy... Grin

I grew up in Dublin, when we flew to Dublin from the UK for this concert we were flat broke, DH had been made redundant post 9/11, took six months to get another job, longer to get back on our feet, but something or someone forced me (Mrs Risk Averse) to stick it all on a credit card and JFDI, so, so grateful we did.

When he died and I re watched the reality tour, ( and sobbed) DS by then rising fifteen looked up from his phone and said was that you. Grin

So I guess it must have been... Grin Grin

Juo · 29/06/2020 02:16

DS22 watched it. He remembers us dancing around the kitchen to It Ain't Easy when he was little.

grafittiartist · 29/06/2020 07:15

Bettysproker- us too!!

BovaryX · 29/06/2020 07:21

@Institutkarite

I saw Bowie in 1973 at the Colston hall In Bristol. He was amazing. It was in the Ziggy days, before Aladdin Sane. Best time of his career.
Wow. That must have been incredible. And you are absolutely right. Nothing surpasses Ziggy Stardust and Hunky Dory. Not even Heroes or Low.
Pinniped · 29/06/2020 07:26

@TheUnquestionedAnswer I also found it emotional. Life on Mars, Ziggy and Absolute Beginners made me cry.

@Starksforthewin that must have been fantastic! I wish I'd made more effort to go to more live shows but still feel fortunate to have seen him once - even all those years ago I remember the day (including what I wore!!).

SquatBetty · 29/06/2020 07:28

I was there too! I think everyone from our camping crowd was watching him which was a rarity as we all liked watching different stuff. Bloody marvellous

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 29/06/2020 07:28

Very different to the other sets they are showing. no lasers, no shots of the audience. no flags.
he didnt allow the whole show to be shown, imagine the disappointment if you were watching at home.

Magicbabywaves · 29/06/2020 07:30

Also there! Was an amazing night.

Starksforthewin · 29/06/2020 08:11

DoorsToManual I think that’s brilliant. Some opportunities have to be taken; the credit card bill is long forgotten but look at those Bowie memories lasting forever. I’m going to have to watch it again and listen out for whoops!😀

I went to the Isle of Wight Festival in 2004 just to see Bowie. He only ever allowed a couple of songs from the set there to be shown on TV, ‘Heroes’ and ‘All The Young Dudes’.
I live in hope that the whole set recording exists still and will be shown some day, it was fantastic.
The atmosphere was incredible, he was the headline act on the Sunday, so closing the Festival, it had been warm and sunny and I think England were in the football somewhere as they’d shown some earlier in the day.
We wimped out and stayed in a BnB on the island. Festivals are not for me any more!

Bovary I’m with you on those albums. ‘Hunky Dory’ is my favourite album of all time, ultimate Bowie.

You saw Bowie in 72? Wow. This thread is a joyful thing, it's great to see how many people loved his music. Bewlay Brothers is one of my favourite Bowie tracks. He was pure class.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 29/06/2020 08:33

i hope he knew how loved he was.

cheekaa · 29/06/2020 09:10

Just reading all your wonderful comments has brought tears to my eyes. I am sitting here with tears rolling down my face.
I so loved this man and I still do.
His music will be with us forever.

Keepwarminthisroom · 29/06/2020 10:04

I'd have loved to have heard Sound and Vision too, Blue, Blue, Electric Blue

Starksforthewin · 29/06/2020 13:38

BovaryX I feel very old! However, I was only 12! Allowed out with 17 yo cousin. Tickets were 80p 😱
One of his costumes was this amazing all in one piece which split in two lengthways when two people pulled on either side. Underneath he had a tiny sort of playsuit. I’d never seen anything like the colour, the drama, the MUSIC!
Mick Ronson blazing away on his guitar...

I am so enjoying reading the love for David on here. So many of us whose lives have had Bowie as the soundtrack. ❣️

What a lovely thread. And what a performance, yes.

I saw him in Manchester in 2002 and it was without doubt the best night of my life. He was perfection.

DD's first word was Bowie (kind of). I used to point at things around the house when she was starting to talk and say what they were (if that makes sense). We had the gatefold sleeve of Aladdin Sane on our wall surrounded with fairy lights and one evening she looked at it and said Bowie (or a first word interpretation thereof). She said it before mama and I couldn't have been prouder, as is she now she's 23 and as big a fan as I am. We were useless for weeks after he died. It felt like actual grief for someone we knew, it was the oddest and most awful thing.

Once I stood behind him in a queue in a shop on Holland Park Avenue. I stood there silently crying and trying to summon up the courage to speak to him but I couldn't. I touched his coat though so that was something at least!

Oh and his incredible bassist was Gail Ann Dorsey, she's the reason I picked up a bass myself.

I have seen a picture of that costume. It must have been incredible. He studied dance and mime with Lindsay Kemp, who later taught Kate Bush. I saw a documentary that featured Woody Woodmansey and Mick Ronson. I think it's sad that the band that transformed him from folk singer to Starman weren't treated well. Nothing compares to those albums. It must have been superb to see him.

slug · 29/06/2020 14:17

Another one who was there. Believe me, until you've stood in a field with thousands of rapt fans singing along to Heroes, you can't claim we were "disengaged".

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/06/2020 14:20

I was backstage 'with' him once. I was sitting on the floor smoking and heard a familiar voice right behind me, I thought it was a friend. Turned around... Bowie talking to Keith Flint from the Prodigy. I did a proper Shock face, turned back and froze in position. I had to sit there until they left because I didn't trust my legs to work.

Both sadly gone now.

Keepwarminthisroom · 29/06/2020 14:38

He certainly was a Tour de F

orce

jacqelinedaniels · 29/06/2020 15:07

Also in tears watching last night. Absolutely wonderful. I was there too and it was incredible, I was so young and didn’t even know much of his music then really (got massively into after seeing the headline set), but was as rapt as everyone else there.

Starksforthewin · 29/06/2020 15:11

Mrs Terry

Have you ever recovered the use of your legs? 😀
