DS has eaten wild berries he found on a tree - help

I don’t have a photo of what he has eaten but it was shaped like a cherry but smaller. It had a pip in the middle and was dark red. It came off a tree, no idea what the tree looks like.

Does anyone know what berry this could be and is it safe? Dh is being very blasé about it but I am worried.

How many did he eat?

babbi · 28/06/2020 19:14

You need to get some of the berries to identify them .
Take him to A and E ... some berries can be poisonous.Dont take risks by doing nothing

Why wasn't it a cherry tree? I ate some yesterday from one in the park.

slipperywhensparticus · 28/06/2020 19:15

Rowen berries?

LycraLovingLass · 28/06/2020 19:15

I used to eat cherries off the tree by my dad's when I was a child. Get him to take you to the tree.

Destroyedpeople · 28/06/2020 19:15

We're the berries sweet and/or tasty. .or nasty?

Hoohaahoo · 28/06/2020 19:16

I’m going to walk down to it now. He said it tasted like cherries so I’m not overly worried, I would think a poisonous berry wouldn’t taste nice?
I want to check though obviously.

Could you get a photo? Try to get him to throw up (if you can!) and get medical advice

coconutcoconutcrack · 28/06/2020 19:17

Could it be a laurel tree as these are also red berries with a white pip inside them.

Ginfordinner · 28/06/2020 19:19

We have some wild cherry trees near our house. They are smaller than the cherries you buy in the supermarket, but are safe to eat. If the stone looks like a cherry stone it could well be a wild cherry.

Here is a link that might help him identify it:

Your DH is being frutratingly unhelpful here. Could he go back to where the berry was ingested and pick one up in case you need to seek medical help?

Hoohaahoo · 28/06/2020 19:20

To be honest I’m really fucked off with DH. He’s making out like I’m over reacting.
Also why would you teach a child to just assume a wild berry is safe to eat? Research, then eat!

You really need to go check what he's eaten and if in any doubt get some medical advice

Plusher · 28/06/2020 19:22

Sounds like cherries. It's been an excellent year for wild cherries. If it is, pick a load and make cherry vodka.

MrsEricBana · 28/06/2020 19:23

You DEFINITELY need to go to the tree, take photo of it and get some of the berries in a clear bag and go to A&E unless it is immediately obvious to you that it's nothing harmful. Hope he's ok. Definitely err o the side of caution here.

Puds11 · 28/06/2020 19:23

Post a pic and I can try identify the tree.

c3pu · 28/06/2020 19:23

I remember the time I ate laburnum seeds and spent the night having my stomach pumped in hospital...

Destroyedpeople · 28/06/2020 19:24

I think a poison berry would have tasted nasty tbh. Take him back to the tree though and make him show you. It's a lesson he won't forget.

YouUnlockedTheGateAnd · 28/06/2020 19:26

Im a keen gardener/ forager and I’d be concerned.

Berries on street trees range from deadly poisonous to completely edible. Your DH is an utter muppet, unless he is an experienced forager.

It sounds like cherries, but wild ones are usually very bitter. And I’d not bet the health of my kid on it.

Best advice ^
MitziK · 28/06/2020 19:28

Sounds like a cherry.

NoHardSell · 28/06/2020 19:29

Sounds like cherries. Good to check though.

Was your dh not worried because it was a cherry tree, or did he have no clue and just let him eat any old red thing?

BertieBotts · 28/06/2020 19:30

Agree with everyone else! I was just telling DS2 who is only 22 months today that berries can be poisonous! Of course he didn't understand a word but start them off right. NHS 111 acts as poison control Hotline in the UK, BTW, defo get a sample of the Berry and leaves of the tree (or a clear photo of them) as this can identify easier.

BertieBotts · 28/06/2020 19:31

Hopefully it is just a cherry if that's what it tastes like!

Hoohaahoo · 28/06/2020 19:32

I think it was this tree. Not very clear sorry.
Dh won’t help as he thinks I’m over reacting.
