DS has eaten wild berries he found on a tree - help

Hoohaahoo · 28/06/2020 19:12

I don’t have a photo of what he has eaten but it was shaped like a cherry but smaller. It had a pip in the middle and was dark red. It came off a tree, no idea what the tree looks like.

Does anyone know what berry this could be and is it safe? Dh is being very blasé about it but I am worried.

Looks like a cherry to me too!

Rubbleonthedouble1 · 28/06/2020 20:07

I would get medical advice x

june2007 · 28/06/2020 20:08

As it,s a cherry I wouldn,t waste time with 111.

To all the people saying get to hospital, without an ident or a specimen the hospital would be clueless. It makes a lot more sense to identify something first and then act accordingly.

Clymene · 28/06/2020 20:09

You don't need to take him to A&E. it's a cherry tree.

lljkk · 28/06/2020 20:09

We do things like eat wild plums, strawberries, blackberries, walnuts...
Apples are always awful though, I don't know why. I live near an old train line so lots of spindly apple trees, and none of the fruit are ever nice. I don't know why no wild cherries around here. And the hazel in our own hedge has never produced any nuts.

I nicked fruit from neighbours' gardens as a child, too (oranges, figs, savos, lemons). Eugenia hedge berries I scoffed a lot. I never warmed to pomegranite, though. Too much hard work.

Hoohaahoo · 28/06/2020 20:11

Not being funny but you’ve seen a few sentences I’ve written here, you’ve not seen me pushing for info on the tree, driving round searching for it etc. To make out like I’m a bad mum is horrible. This site is so toxic sometimes.

Thank you to those that offered helpful advice. I feel sure it is a cherry tree after looking up information on them.

Yes, it's a cherry tree

Hopeisnotastrategy · 28/06/2020 20:11

I am the last person to flap, but you need to err on the side of caution here and go to A & E, preferably with a sample of what he had if you can get it quickly.

You need to go.💕

Hoohaahoo · 28/06/2020 20:12

And I’m not going to rush to a+e with no information as to what he has eaten during a pandemic thank you.

Mammaaof · 28/06/2020 20:13

@Hoohaahoo doesn't sound like youd be that bothered even if there wasn't a pandemicHmm

Tianalia · 28/06/2020 20:15

I wouldn't take any risks with that. Find out what they are.

FlameFartingDragon · 28/06/2020 20:16

This site is so toxic sometimes.

As are fucking unidentified berries. Why are you even relying on ID from strangers on the internet over ensuring your child is safe?

FML. Time to hide the thread.

goingtotown · 28/06/2020 20:17

So why did you bother to post ?

Hoohaahoo · 28/06/2020 20:17

I have. The tree perfectly matches the cherry tree described and it’s listed as edible.

Thanks Mammaaof I hope that has made you feel better about yourself.

@Mammaaof that comment was uncalled for. Op, you did exactly the right thing. No point in turning up at A & E with no idea of what your DS had eaten. Hopefully, you will explain to him now that it isnt a good idea to be eating random berries of trees or bushes and i would be having a strong word with your DH too.

Tianalia · 28/06/2020 20:17

Oh dear. Well my child are some berries unbeknown to me when he was younger. I didn't know he had done it, until he told his sister a few days later, but during the night he became extremely ill and I had to call an ambulance. Maybe that will help your decision making. Or maybe it won't.

Vandree · 28/06/2020 20:18

Its a cherry tree, one just like that at my mums house on the lane and it was full of cherries which all the neighbours take on their walks past and my kids filled their pockets with, there are plum trees too. We never realised until this year that they were proper fruit trees and not just for birds. You did the right thing getting to the tree and finding the fruit. If you have a local poisons helpline its a good idea to stick the number in your phone so if it wasn't cherries you could ask, they are always very helpful.

Mammaaof · 28/06/2020 20:19

@Hoohaahoo think it's your husband you need to deal with who lets a young child eat berries off a random tree, then his wife drives around with the child looking for the tree, which could be poisonous.

ItsSpittingEverybodyIn · 28/06/2020 20:20

Crikey you lot, I've just got to the end of the thread and the op has been fretting and running around like a, headless chicken trying to find out what her child ate before going to A&E, what would be the point in going to a&e what could they do? Unless you know what was eaten. Makes perfect sense to find out first. Unless her child was showing signs of being unwell then I'm sure they'd have been to hospital like a shot.

Cornishmendoitdrekkly · 28/06/2020 20:24

Definitely cherries. They grow at the bottom of my garden. They are sour but make great cherry pie.

Your DH should have been 99% more helpful.OP, that is horrible of him.

BabyLlamaZen · 28/06/2020 20:26

Err just because it tastes ok doesn't mean it's not poisonous! Seriously dangerous though. Hope it all works out ok.

Fightthebear · 28/06/2020 20:26

Also looks like a Cherry Tree to me.

Sweet tasting berries can be poisonous though. We had a horrible time with DS2 in A&E when he ate Yew tree berries. Normally the very poisonous seeds pass through a child undigested but they kept him in to be sure, apparently 3 would be enough to kill a small child. Sh as me they look like sweets.

It does appear you don't need to go and sorry you had a tough time.

Please can I urge everyone reading if you need a and e for you or a family member please go.
Pandemic or no pandemic. If its urgent care you need you need to go. People have died because they didnt seek treatment and didnt want to catch coronavirus but died anyway sometimes of something treatable
