DS has eaten wild berries he found on a tree - help

I don’t have a photo of what he has eaten but it was shaped like a cherry but smaller. It had a pip in the middle and was dark red. It came off a tree, no idea what the tree looks like.

Does anyone know what berry this could be and is it safe? Dh is being very blasé about it but I am worried.

There’s no point op going to a&e it’s obviously a cherry tree from the last two pics. Phew!

To make you feel better I ate some woody nightshade berries that were growing amongst the redcurrants on a pick you own fruit farm when I was about six. I think I spat them out but DM was terrified!

bluefoxmug · 28/06/2020 20:31

phew
you need to teach your dc 'no picking - no licking' wrt to random leaves and fruits.

as pp write there are some plants/fungi that can make you seriously unwell.

ListeningQuietly · 28/06/2020 20:32

Wild cherries
one of life's pleasures
well done him
pick as many as you can and make cherry pie

Sounds like cherries. It's been an excellent year for wild cherries. If it is, pick a load and make cherry vodka.

Always a silver lining, ay?! 😂

doesn't sound like youd be that bothered even if there wasn't a pandemic

Uncalled for bitch comment. Did you miss where the OP was desperately trying to get her ds to show her the tree and driving round to find it?

ListeningQuietly · 28/06/2020 20:34

@Hoohaahoo
If EVER you find yourself in this situation again
call the RHS
www.rhs.org.uk/science/meet-the-team
as they will reassure you and advise you FAR better than random internet posters

purplecorkheart · 28/06/2020 20:35

A&E now.

XiCi · 28/06/2020 20:36

Glad you've found the tree and it's safe OP.
Your DH sounds like a nasty twat. Do you think he knew it was a cherry tree while you were rushing around panicking? Either way he sounds horrible.

Mammaaof · 28/06/2020 20:36

@Cherrysoup yes driving around and counting on a young child to recall which tree he ate from! Which he must have been lift up to looking at the pictures!

user1728393 · 28/06/2020 20:38

There's an app called picture this. You take a picture of any tree/plant/flower and it tells you what it is. May be useful in the future.

lilgreen · 28/06/2020 20:38

Yes we have loads on our school field. Cherry for sure.

Hoohaahoo · 28/06/2020 20:38

You can clearly see me holding the cherries without reaching up Mama. Do you enjoy attacking strangers on the internet?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I’m ducking out now.

100% cherries - well done @Hoohaahoo for showing your DS how urgent and important your response to this was - I hope he's not too shaken up, but has learned a valuable lesson - you can't change DH, but you should tell DS it's just not worth the risk eating from a tree you may not be sure of. It's a bit strange that your DH wasn't 100% sure though - how irresponsible of him!

ListeningQuietly · 28/06/2020 20:42

I used to get glared at during school pickup for standing and eating blackberries and raspberries out of the hedge

more fool them

DH, but you should tell DS it's just not worth the risk eating from a tree you may not be sure of.
LEARN THE TREES THEN

Lovemusic33 · 28/06/2020 20:43

Cherries 😁

There are not actually many berries that are poisonous and the ones that are would probably taste pretty vile. I eat many things including wild berries (I like to forage) but am always pretty careful.

SirVixofVixHall · 28/06/2020 20:43

Definitely a cherry. Mine are touching the ground at the moment, as the branches are thin and laden with fruit.

chipperfish · 28/06/2020 20:45

Gean trees! Staple of childhood wandring if the birds didnt get them first
But good on you for taking it seriously and having a sensible approach to identifying the tree. Glad it wasnt anything more serious

diddl · 28/06/2020 20:45

So if your husband was out with your son-how come he didn't see what had been eaten?

Whenwillthisbeover · 28/06/2020 20:48

Hope you’re ok OP, I would t have taken mine to A&E either. Just monitored them.

I’ve eaten random cherries loads of times, always disappointing but never poisoned.

GnomeDePlume · 28/06/2020 20:55

From googling the fruit and bark all say cherry. It is the wrong season for Yew.

amusedtodeath1 · 28/06/2020 20:56

Just wanted to say how awful that must have been for you OP. So glad everything is fine though. Give DH a bollicking from me!

I think you did exactly the right thing.

AllStartedWithUSA · 28/06/2020 21:14

@Hoohaahoo I think you’ve done a brilliant job to protect your son here. I’m not sure why there’s so many bitchy comments directed at you. You found out he’d eaten a berry, you tracked it down and determined cherry from your own research and looking on here. So unlikely to be a danger and keeping eye on son. All seems rational sensible to me. No point in going to a&e without identifying (unless son was showing signs of not being right of course!) Youve also acted quickly and left home to track berry down which as pp said will demonstrate to your ds how important that identification was and how it would be easier in future to just not eat wild berries. You handled it brilliantly. Your dh on the other hand sounds like a Fucking idiot. You should Make him read this thread. The bitchy comments should be for him.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 28/06/2020 21:18

@purplecorkheart
Utter rubbish. It's a bloody cherry tree. The OP did the correct thing, found the tree and it's been identified as a cherry tree. It's not something that might be a cherry tree, or something that looks like a cherry tree but isn't. It's a 100% cherry tree!
So quit with the "A&E" now rubbish. No wonder A&E are always overworked.

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/06/2020 21:20

There's an app called picture this. You take a picture of any tree/plant/flower and it tells you what it is. May be useful in the future. No! Don't rely on an app. They don't have plant knowledge, they're merely comparing pixels, and when they get it wrong they can be seriously misleading. And they don't know when they've got it wrong, so they can't tell you that it might be wrong.

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/06/2020 21:23

Did DH know what it was? Pretty shitty of him to not tell you if so, but as long as the child has learnt the message "never taste anything unless you've shown it to Mum/Dad first" there is no harm in letting them know that some plants are edible.

eugh · 28/06/2020 21:28

This thread made me sweat! I'm so glad you found the tree OP.
