@Weedsnseeds1

Hester I think Leicester is majority Muslim? My relatives live in the county but not the city. Domina I fear for the snake too as its quite cold here. Or maybe it will be kidnapped bh marauding Brummies?
It's a bit of a mish mash - there are pockets of a very high percentage of population who are Muslim, but there's also a big Hindu community - Diwali is a huge thing in Leicester.
HesterShaw1 · 29/06/2020 23:01

Leicester rhymes with Hester.

HesterShaw1 · 29/06/2020 23:01

Sorry - might have had some wine Blush

IAintentDead · 29/06/2020 23:02

If you are going to announce an immediate, area specific lockdown mid evening is definitely the time to do it. It gives time for the 24 hour services to plan (knowing it was on the cards) without time for locals to get out of the area - or panic shop. Both of which, whilst good for the individual, are counterproductive.

I really think that tomorrow they will specify a more discrete area but if that had happened immediately too many people in the real risk areas would have been able to escape. I think there will almost be a 'traffic light' system for enforcement. Outer edges of the Amber will still be able to get out.

FizzFan · 29/06/2020 23:02

Oh no Dowser that’s awful

PickAChew · 29/06/2020 23:08

Well, it's the summer holidays, soon, @DominaShantotto Even longer since I last visited Sunderland than Newcastle. Though oddly, I don't miss it so much!

I'm wincing, @Dowser

justasking111 · 29/06/2020 23:09

Remember lockdown Boris just came out and said as from now you are all locked down. That was a moment I will not forget.

Mascotte · 29/06/2020 23:12

Oh Domina (and other East Midlands dwellers) that is absolutely shit.

I was to be in the Sadly Deads. I think we should wear boiler suits. And sing in a virus spreading manner.

I read out the story about the cat bringing home a roast chicken to my family. Hilarious Grin

Hugs again to all near Leicester. I can't believe lockdown is back.

Mascotte · 29/06/2020 23:19

@Nihiloxica I can't wear a boiler suit owing to my massive lockdown arse. But can wear an AD cloak and look mystical on backing vocals.

justasking111 · 29/06/2020 23:21

To put it in context, Germany, China, have both had to clamp down in hotspots. In many countries they can point a gun at you, I have seen some unsettling things come out of Spain and Italy re: enforcement.

Oh maybe we should all wear cloaks.

An entire band of Rick Wakemans.

fartingsparkles · 29/06/2020 23:26

Huge hugs to any Leicester dwellers. Its a huge steaming pile of crap. The whole bloody thing has been a 100 day shitshow.

My geography is hazy round the east mids area I must admit 😳 although my geography is generally a bit rubbish. I do remember my dad saying about when he was in the RAF in the 60s, the US aircrew always brought a laugh on when they said they were over "Ly - ces - ter". 'Cree-wee' was another one (or Crewe as we know it).

TuckMyWin · 29/06/2020 23:30

I really shouldn't venture out to the other side. It's exhausting. The fact that schools have been closed in Leicester is proof that they are all "hotbeds of infection" that are going to kill all teachers come September, or something. It's like people think the virus is going to spontaneously generate just because people are in a school. Can people not understand that the strategy is to keep infection rates low everywhere, and therefore also in schools? In areas where they rise to unacceptable levels, which may also include schools, local restrictions / closures will apply. Why the bloody hell would 5 schools in Leicester having outbreaks, in an area that reportedly has 10% of all the infections in the country, mean that schools everywhere else in the country where infection rates are low, are inherently unsafe?

If it comes out that schools are the source of the Leicester spike then I'll happily take that all back, but somehow I doubt that will happen.

Jourdain11 · 29/06/2020 23:32

It's also interesting how a school having one case is an "outbreak".

justasking111 · 29/06/2020 23:35

I think it is more likely that three generations living in close contact, large families where family go out to different places of employment are a more likely explanation than schools. They said in Italy that was their biggest problem. DS had a girlfriend who lived in Italy teaching english, the lane they lived in there was owned by one family the houses having extensions to take in older relatives, this had gone back for generations. At that time there were three properties everyone shared everything and were very close and loving.

Jourdain11 · 29/06/2020 23:35

My DC's school had an "outbreak" of chickenpox earlier in the year. No doubt it could have been very dangerous to all the hundreds of vulnerable children, teachers and their families (shingles). But it wasn't locked down because, you know, life.

That's forgivable. It's not the most celebrated zone of the world Grin

For a total novice, I tend to assume they've heard of Nottingham and go from there. TBH I'm not great on much that's further east than Leicester or Nottingham. It always vaguely surprises me that Northamptonshire gets lumped in because from my angle it's south of Coventry in the West Mids.

It does always amuse me in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves when they rock up near Dover, anounce that night that they shall dine in Nottingham, trek up to Hadrian's Wall, nip down to Nottingham and shortly after backtrack to Aysgarth Falls for a bit of a fight. Especially pre-A1! Grin

My ds has chickenpox now. Which he can only have picked up from nursery. Nobody's suggested closing the nursery over it yet, so far as I know.

There is now a map published. Interesting article re: the causes of the upsurge in covid in East Leicester.

It was weird going travelling and learning to accept armed police as normal after initially finding it jarring. I prefer our style of policing.

Then again I was so used to Asian style road crossing, walking around the traffic in a mutual method of trust that we would all just miss each other, that within 30 seconds of walking out of St Pancras station on our way back from Heathrow, that we nearly got runover and had horns honking. We had to relearn the Green Cross Code Grin

Being a disease ridden vector, DS1 kindly brought chicken pox home from nursery when DS2 was 7 weeks. At 9 weeks, DS2 was rather spotty.

TuckMyWin · 29/06/2020 23:48

@Bogroll, my ds is apparently the most disease ridden vector of all, as this is the second time he has had chickenpox, even though he was vaccinated against it as a baby (totally outing myself there). He should clearly be banned from nursery and school forever more, in case he kills innocent old ladies just by his mere presence.
