85% of the deaths have been in the over 75 age range and the meadian sadly death age is 80. So age is the main thing.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 29/06/2020 16:17

@HesterShaw1

Best not Joudain. It's like prodding a hornet. I obviously meant that all people who die of Covid are nearly dead anyway, of course I did Hmm.

I swear some posters just wander round the site seeking offence

In mum's case it was true, she would have died anyway it's not offensive to me that anyone would think that. It's more offensive that some would rather she spent her last months in horrific pain "because anything is better than dying from covid".
IAintentDead · 29/06/2020 16:22

That pigeon collared dove that kamikazed into my window yesterday had a mate. The poor sod keeps coming to look for him.

Jourdain11 · 29/06/2020 16:26

When my great aunt died from pneumonia after catching swine flu, having been suffering from dementia in a care home for years, we all felt it was good that she was at peace. She was frightened, she didn't know who any of us were, she was doubly incontinent... honestly, it was terrible to see. We were sad to lose her, but we had lost her long ago. Nobody said "sadly died" and "this terrible disease" and "taken before her time".

HesterShaw1 · 29/06/2020 16:34

Jourdain, that's exactly what I was driving at. I used the example of my dad who died of Alzheimer's, but the pneumonia finally finished him off. Thet asked what we wanted on the death cert, and we all very firmly said "Alzheimer's" because pneumonia would simply have been inaccurate. It is very likely that had he pulled through from that bout, something else over the winter would have got him.

And still they took offence!

TheGreatWave · 29/06/2020 16:41

It sounds like I am best to avoid that thread.

Worldgonecrazy · 29/06/2020 16:43

The schools threads are nuts. I just want to ask them to point me to the science that says a child anywhere in the world has transmitted the virus.

I’m also seriously concerned at the long term mental health effects on EVERYONE, not just those who are terrified of their own shadow, but also children. I also think there’s going to be some massive cognitive dissonance from the playground monitors when they reflect on their behaviours.

Having a shit day. Self aggrandising guard in local outdoor square told me to walk on the left, the next nearest person was 100 yards or more away. Next time I will just ensure my headphones are blasting and refuse to make eye contact.

Feeling a bit jealous of those able to have a midweek drink. I can’t stop once I start so have to limit myself to weekends and holidays.

PickAChew · 29/06/2020 16:44

My patronus is a collared dove :( Thankfully, mine has just been in the garden with its mate.

I need to brave the wind and take out our pepper and chilli plants because the aphids have got them. We have some wax based insecticide but it's locked in the garage with the knackered door, so will have to make do with washing up liquid. Just need to open the door with the wind catching it.

Orangeblossom78 · 29/06/2020 16:46

I an just sad that is seems this new school guidance might mean dropping some GCSEs in the middle. Sounds a right mess. Argh.

Orangeblossom78 · 29/06/2020 16:48

Oh they called me murderous for saying about the old people dying anyway of old age, so I understand what you mean. My granny too and it was the best for her. (dementia and pnuemonia)

I agree. On one hand I don't think anyone hives a shit what GCSEs you have as long as youve passed maths and English, But, on the other hand it will be incredibly shit for the kids who know exactly what they want to do and need history/art/drama or whatever to do it.

There's going to have to be allowances from colleges / unis for less GCSEs or not the certain set they require for a course etc.

It's a shit show.

Orangeblossom78 · 29/06/2020 17:01

I suppose everyone will be in the same boat - except private schools perhaps.

I took languages for both my options at GCSE. Without them my entire life/career would have panned out very differently!

I don't think so personally. I think some schools will see this as an opportunity to go above and beyond. Run extra lessons or clubs or revision sessions or whatever, prove theyve caught their kids up. Get a good reputation etc (I'm thinking academies tbh which prev I hated but they seem to have been the better schools in this situation!) And others will take the easy option, cut all the non essentials and do the bare minimum.

Exactly! Like for me it didn't matter, but for you it mattered a hell of a lot!

Depends on each individual student and for many this will fuck up their plans!

Orangeblossom78 · 29/06/2020 17:09

It seems this new guidance tells them to drop some subjects to concentrate on maths and english though. So guess they will need to follow it. We've a good school but there might be limits they can do if they are told to do this. Anyway sorry for going on. As an aside I have been spending a fortune on music tuition as it is needed for the GCSE so if they have to drop that I guess that might save me some money Hmm

PickAChew · 29/06/2020 17:10

I wandered into that thread, last night, then crept out again. I had to comment in a particular competitive woe thread, mind. That was one hell of a plop combined with a good old fashioned bit of vaguebooking.

Orangeblossom78 · 29/06/2020 17:10

Well yes, it will fuck up their A levels too if they can't do those due to it and then uni as well...and I don't see what it has to do with the virus either really, if they can change things so they can do those subjects they should d everything they can to make it work.

IAintentDead · 29/06/2020 17:10

There is a reason they used to call pneumonia 'the old man's friend'.

According to their logic it doesn't matter that they would have died anyway - not even if they died within the last 3 months - it's only sad if it's Covid.

Bollss · 29/06/2020 17:11

Ah right yes if it's compulsory that's different.

It's all a load of shite isn't it. Perhaps if they'd opened schools sooner they wouldn't need to catch up, or drop anything.

SomewhereEast · 29/06/2020 17:30

@Jourdain11 I know exactly how you feel on that. I have a 91yo grandmother whom I've always been close to (she & my granddad basically stepped in & brought me up when my mother wasn't coping) and honestly if she passed away now I wouldn't be sad. She has dementia & her whole body is gradually shutting down in various ways. My biggest worry for her is that her keeps going but ends up very distressed or in constant pain (both those things are present but manageable at the moment). There are actually worse things than death!

Although having said that I would be sad at the moment from a selfish POV because she's in Ireland and I haven't seen her since Christmas & might not this summer either. Normally we go over several times a year.

Drivingdownthe101 · 29/06/2020 17:33

Anyone surprised by the number of ‘teachers’ on here who really seem to dislike children?

SomewhereEast · 29/06/2020 17:34

On a less depressing note I'm in East Yorks near the coast so if anyone's looking at hols our way I can suggest things!

Very Sad
PickAChew · 29/06/2020 17:40

Given the amount of general bullshit on this site, I'm not surprised at all. I tend to file them in the same place as women who don't have any clue at all about teenage girls underwear and 20 year old mothers of twins who are in danger of getting their house repossessed after the mysterious and lengthy illness of one of their twins meant they had to give up the career they had worked so hard at.
