UTI Help!

Wilberforce1 · 26/06/2020 21:07

I know this isn't health but you get more replies on here!

I've had what I'm guessing is a UTI come on this evening just out of the blue and my god I'm in agony. I'm going to the toilet every 15 minutes or so and it's burning so much, I haven't had one of these for years so can't really remember if there is anything I should do!

I've managed to get 3 sachets of Cystopurin from a friend round the corner but is there anything else that will help tonight? Even when I've just been to the toilet my bladder feels like it's ready to burst 😫

Will painkillers help?

I'm falling apart at the moment, I've had a terrible headache forever and found out yesterday I need root canal in a dodgy tooth!

Contact you out of hours dr.
If you phone your surgery there will be an answer machine message for the number you need to call so you can speak to someone and get a prescription. Do not continue to suffer all weekend until you can speak to a dr on Monday. I hope you feel better soon.

NoToast · 26/06/2020 21:14

I used to get these regularly, would try and flush out with cranberry juice and I think it was bicarb of soda in water. Would drink lots which would help. Don't know if that's still current advice, have a google. They are awful, hope you feel better soon, x

Wilberforce1 · 26/06/2020 21:15

Thank you, I'll try the surgery now.

Just been again and also have the added joy of blood in my wee!

Drink lots and I mean lots! It helps in you have something to pass. Cranberry juice and cold water.

Pain relief is a given. Maybe a cool pack down below for the burning feeling.

You have my upmost sympathy. They are bloody awful.

31133004Taff · 26/06/2020 21:16

Cystopurin should kick in within an hour. I also take an anti inflammatory, ie, ibrofen for the cystitis. Peeing in a bath/bowl of warm water is really soothing. Drink lots of water. This may resolve the acute symptoms of infection but still get a test. The bacteria can lie dormant and suddenly flare up again. UTI can turn nasty.

concernedforthefuture · 26/06/2020 21:18

Hmm if there's blood in your wee you need to see an out of hours doc tonight. Call 111. In the meantime, keep drinking lots of water to flush out your system and keep your wee dilute - that will help a bit with the stinging.

AppleKatie · 26/06/2020 21:18

Drink pints and pints of water.

Mamma92 · 26/06/2020 21:18

I used to get these all the time you poor thing ! A hot water bottle between my legs used to help not sure why ! And lots of water and lemon squash but antibiotics is the only way to get rid I think , dont leave it all weekend xx

Wilberforce1 · 26/06/2020 21:27

GP answer phones just tells me to call 111 if out of hours, if I wait it out I could go to urgent care at the hospital first thing tomorrow. I could go now if I have to, I can drive myself. Not sure what's best don't want to turn up all dramatic for a UTI!

Bicarbonate of soda works brilliantly

ElzP · 26/06/2020 21:37

When I had this I called 111 - a gp called me back and sent antibiotics to the local 24 hour pharmacy for me.
Took about 3 hours all in from first calling them

GertrudeCB · 26/06/2020 21:42

If you've got blood in your wee you could well need antibiotics.
Try a warm hot water bottle on your lower tum and drink as much as you can. Try to completely empty your bladder when you wee.

HMSSophie · 26/06/2020 21:44

If it gets unbearable, run a warm bath and pee in that. Gross perhaps, but helps a lot as you drink you PINTS of water (a pint a hour minimum)

Haretodaygonetomorrow · 26/06/2020 22:10

I’ve never had a UTI go away without antibiotics. Drink plenty to dilute your urine but I definitely wouldn’t hang about in getting treatment sorted now - IME they just get worse the longer they go on. Things like drinking cranberry won’t help now you’re at this stage, it’s more of a preventative. Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Wilberforce1 · 26/06/2020 23:18

Thank you so much everyone.

I phoned the local urgent care because there was blood every time I went to the toilet and she said they had doctors sitting around waiting for patients so I should go and give them something to do! 45 mins later I'm back home with some antibiotics that I've never heard of, MacroBID (Nitrofurantoin). Hopefully they will get to work quickly but the doctor did say it's a severe UTI.

I've taken two and now I'm off to bed 😴 Glad I posted here because I think I would have tried to get through it for the weekend.

@Wilberforce1 I take that antibiotic regularly, it's very effective.
I have it so often they just speak to me over phone rather than me go in.
Hope you feel better soon x

Nat6999 · 26/06/2020 23:45

Be careful with Nitrofuarantin, if you get any numbness or tingling, ring 111 & stop taking them. I am just about unable to walk as due to a bad reaction they have left me numb from mid thigh to my feet & my hands.

BankofNook · 27/06/2020 00:12

Nitrofurantoin are really effective and work really quickly but my God I felt like shit the whole time I was on them! Try taking them with an entire glass of they make you feel sickly and be prepared for your pee to turn bright yellow, I don't know why the whole glass of water works - makes the tablet dissolve faster maybe? - but the GP recommended it and it did help.

Wilberforce1 · 27/06/2020 11:09

@BankofNook you weren't joking when you said they make you feel like shit and I've just thrown up twice 😫 Will make sure I do the entire glass of water with the other one this evening. Oh and the fluorescent pee is quite surprising!

OP posts:
BankofNook · 27/06/2020 11:34

Poor you, @Wilberforce1, it's no fun feeling so crappy.

The glass of water at pill time. Eat little and often too rather than big meals, simple stuff like toast or crackers. If the sickness keeps up or gets too bad then ring the doctor back and ask for something else.

Did they give you the warning about turning yellow? Any excessive itching or yellowing of your skin or eyes and you need to get in touch with a doctor.

I hope you feel better soon Flowers

Nat6999 · 27/06/2020 11:45

I know how you feel, woken up with yet another UTI, on Trimethoprim for 7 days as I can't have Nitrofuarantin.

giveusaringdingding · 27/06/2020 11:59

With nitro if you really can’t stop being sick they can give you something to help to take alongside - they usually give me cyclizine too .

I’m another with recurrent UTIs - usually 5+ a year - now allergic to penicillin, and trimethoprim so very unsure what happens next with me !

BankofNook · 27/06/2020 12:01

Cefalexin is another UTI antibiotic. Also vile, tastes like cat pee smells.

LondonPainter · 27/06/2020 12:34

@Wilberforce1 I feel your pain! I started on that same antibiotic yesterday, after waking up at 3am in agony and unable to get back to sleep. I phoned my GP and she sent the prescription through that morning. UTIs are the worst Sad I'm feeling so much better already though and I hope you are too Thanks

Paranoidmarvin · 27/06/2020 13:06

Just for future reference. Superdrug do some tablets that you can buy and keep in your medicine cabinet. I have done this so when my next one comes I have the medication ready and it doesn’t get as far as the blood stage
