And should they both get in the sea?

Both equally annoying

SushiGo · 24/06/2020 15:11

Gammons are definitely worse.

You have to have really quite extreme 'woke' views for them to have a negative impact on others whereas gammons cause harm through racism and resistance to positive change even at low levels.

Also gammons are explicitly anti-expert whereas the whole point of being woke is the idea of educating yourself, listening and new ideas. A woke person might have strong views on something now, but if their wokeness is really their defining political characteristic they may one day change it.

Woke.
Because it's a global problem. It dominate the culture and is seeded in media, academia, the permanent state and private corporations, seemingly.
Purity spiral. Virtue signal. Performative activism. Very apt terms.
I don't find the idea of life as a perpetual Maoist struggle session to be appealing, so I fight 'woke' with every breath, by merely being a decent person, and not performing it so. For instance, Central Park Amy is a democrat donor, but a raging passive-aggressive racist. I assume she thought she bought the right to be...

Gammon is from one country, and really is people with very little cultural power who lucked out through the confidentiality of the ballot box.

DameFanny · 24/06/2020 15:18

'woke' want things to be better for all people, 'gammons' want people they don't approve of to not exist/have fewer rights and protections than they do, and also go make me a sandwich woman.

Not really any comparison.

Woke is just this decade's name for what's previously been called Politically Correct, before that Right On, before that - Do Gooder.

Why did Do Gooder become perjorative? Same reason people get offended when more considerate/less selfish ways of doing things are mooted. And definitely on the same spectrum of 'well I wasn't going to do the bad thing but you made me feel bad so now I will'.

Fuck me I'm sick of it all.

roarfeckingroar · 24/06/2020 15:42

I find the woke are more aggressive. Especially TRAs.

DameFanny · 24/06/2020 15:51

You didn't see the statue protectors in London the other weekend then?

I think people see what they want to see, read what they want to read and learn what they want to learn - and their mind gets blown if they learn something that goes against what they believe.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 24/06/2020 15:59

Married to a gammon. Possibly less annoying and sanctimonious than woke but I'm not sure.

YukoandHiro · 24/06/2020 16:03

Gammon

Ijustreallywantacat · 24/06/2020 16:05

Gammon. They care about themselves and only themselves. They are not interested in making life better for anyone but themselves.

At least 'woke' people are fighting for the rights of others. Trying to understand and be good to each other. Don't understand how that can be a bad thing.

BacklashStarts · 24/06/2020 16:06

Isn’t gammon just old woke in reality? They are both just mouthy so and so more concerned with how they look than anything else

BarbedBloom · 24/06/2020 16:23

Gammon

Gosh that's me told Hmm Not like cameras from a variety of sources were capturing the aggression and drunkenness Hmm

DameFanny · 24/06/2020 16:43

Gammon being old woke is a freaky take - as if the angry thumbs used to march for women's right to vote?

midgebabe · 24/06/2020 16:49

What unites woke and gammon is a lack of critical thinking and a happiness to go with the line of least resistance ( in a cognitive sense)

So whilst woke claim they want everything groovy for everyone, they don't see that their actions prevent that

And the average gammon will be " I'm not racist but..." again not seeing themselves for what they are

Er, what? So you don't consider Rebecca Solnit woke? Or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez? Or Reni Eddo-Lodge?

Miriel · 24/06/2020 17:08

As a word, gammon is worse, because I'm not comfortable with insults based on someone's skin colour even if the person being insulted is racist.

Both outlooks are wrong in my view, but on balance the woke are worse because of their desire to demonise and silence everyone who openly disagrees with even the tiniest bit of their ideology.

midgebabe · 24/06/2020 17:18

I recognise one of the names as an American? I would rather not label individuals as woke since I think of it as a derogatory term.

I have come across the woke in the youth who are wanting the best for everyone but fail to recognise that women ever have any problems triggered by their sex. I also recognise as woke the young adults who are happy to "cease" people like JKR based on rumour, or on the basis of one wrong thought they ever uttered or liked. It's an easy way to build ageism into your creed.

DameFanny · 24/06/2020 17:37

So in your reading 'woke' is an insult with no bearing on people's political opinions or activities?

Riiiiigghht.

midgebabe · 24/06/2020 17:39

Oh read the whole thing

I see it as insulting , yes.

I then explained the types of both political opinion and actions that I associate with people I would call woke

ErrolTheDragon · 24/06/2020 17:42

Most of the 'woke' will grow out of it, I expect.

Some who currently are apparently in this camp will eventually be recognisable as dogmatic misogynistic bullying men. They may be labelled 'left' rather than 'right' but some of them are pretty much full circle.

chomalungma · 24/06/2020 18:22

@DameFanny

Gosh that's me told hmm Not like cameras from a variety of sources were capturing the aggression and drunkennes

That comment wasn't to you. It was a general comment about what people see.

But you have inadvertantly proved my point because you saw it as being aimed at you - when it was supposed to back you up.

DameFanny · 24/06/2020 18:48

Sorry @chomalunga - I mistook you for one of the too-rapidly breeding truthers this pandemic has brought out - sorry

BogRollBOGOF · 24/06/2020 20:05

Woke.

Gammon is normally pretty transparent with its mysogenism and thinly veiled racism.
Woke superficially looks caring and liberal, but really has as much tolerance as Gammon. Woke trades off one disadvantaged group against another and denounces counter-argument often resorting to crude insults and bullying. It's much more insidious and is deceptive in its virtue signalling.

As a PP said, they are different sides of the same coin.

(Gammon I think of as having a beetroot face from high blood pressure and poorly concealed rage, not as a race description. My face goes that colour from running.)

Katharinablum · 24/06/2020 20:07

I wish people would stop labouring the idea that if you support left wing policies you're a bloody marxist.
