Windows open or closed?

We're having a very boring debate! DH says, it's a hot day, open the windows to let a breeze through. I say, it's currently cooler indoors than outside, keep the windows closed so we aren't letting the hotter air in. Who is right?

28C outside and 25/26C in at the moment.

I would say closed but I hate flies coming in and definitely keeps house cooler. I open them early evening.

PrincessButtockUp · 24/06/2020 13:13

Close windows and curtains on the side in the sun. Have them open on the shade side. Change as the sun moves round. HTH.

Roo2012 · 24/06/2020 13:13

While the sun is directly on them, windows closed and curtains/blind closed. When the sun has moved and its sooner, widows, blinds/curtains opened.

IwishIhadaMargarita · 24/06/2020 13:14

Closed as I have hay fever.

MbwaKali · 24/06/2020 13:14

Windows and curtains/blinds closed all day. Taught by my German friend and it works. In the evening, if there’s a breeze, throw all the windows wide open for a good blow through.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 24/06/2020 13:14

We do windows open to get air through. I love windows open and fresh air though.

If I'm in a v hot room I'd close curtains but we're okay at the moment.

Zaphodsotherhead · 24/06/2020 13:14

I can't bear having my windows closed - it makes me feel a touch claustrophobic. I know current advice is to close windows and curtains, but, to me, that makes it feel as though I'm living in a student house.

Open those windows, let some breeze and some sun in!

ScrapThatThen · 24/06/2020 13:16

Currently WFH in a loft 😟. I keep the curtains and blinds closed but open the windows behind the blind because I would probably suffocate up there without any air.

Luzina · 24/06/2020 13:17

Windows open everywhere. Curtains closed where the sun is coming in. I've tried closed windows and my house was hotter

Iwantacookie · 24/06/2020 13:17

Closed to stop flys. Flys themselves arent the issue. The 2 cats trashing my house to catch said flys are why they're closed

blankethog · 24/06/2020 13:18

Closed through the day, open early evening when there's actually a breeze usually.

MamaFirst · 24/06/2020 13:19

We have all the windows in the house open and a lovely breeze coming through. If there's no breeze though and it's literally just hot air coming in, then keep them closed and shut blinds.

ExpletiveDelighted · 24/06/2020 13:22

Open to let the breeze through. Curtains or blinds shut when sun is shining on that window.

user69 · 24/06/2020 13:23

Windows and back door open all day. I love having the windows and door open.

AgeLikeWine · 24/06/2020 13:24

Do as people who live in hot countries, but don’t have aircon, do. Windows closed and curtains / blinds /shutters closed on the sunny side of the house during the day. Windows & curtains open at night.

Floralnomad · 24/06/2020 13:25

Windows open , but they all have fly screens as my daughter is bug phobic .

Zaphodsotherhead · 24/06/2020 13:27

I know a lot of people don't like leaving windows open at night, because they are worried about burglars creeping in.

I've currently got every door and window open. I'll close the downstairs windows and doors when I go to work, but leave the inside doors open and the upstairs windows open for air to circulate. I've got the loft window open too and all the warm air seems to be wafting out!

Helps I live on the top of a hill, in a windy place, with a cool living room and tiled floors downstairs, though.

Does it help to leave damp towels hanging in rooms?

BearSoFair · 24/06/2020 13:30

Seems like a split here as well! Also have a bug phobic DD (and me!) so we're both very happy to keep them closed

Our windows and curtains have been closed all day and it is a lovely 21 degrees inside compared to 30 degreed ouside. I will open them this evening when the outside temperature drops.

Zaphodsotherhead · 24/06/2020 13:46

I think also it depends on whether the sun is shining directly in to the rooms or not.

happymummy12345 · 24/06/2020 13:50

We have them open to let the air in. The sun shines in the front from mid afternoon which makes our bedroom and the living/ dining room very hot (living dining room is completely open, one big room), so we close the shutters downstairs and the blinds upstairs to keep the sun out. Annoying but better than the sun shining right in.

safariboot · 24/06/2020 13:53

I go for closed in the day, open in the evening. Though it does mean any lights attract a load of bugs. When it's really hot outside I find opening the windows doesn't really help.

Laiste · 24/06/2020 13:54

All the windows open (doors propped open - there's a breeze here) and blinds/curtains drawn where the sun is shinning on glass.

As i sit here right now there's a little breeze coming through and it's lovely :)

givememarmite · 24/06/2020 13:55

Open all windows fully early morning to air then close windows & curtains/blinds all day (or at least on the sunny side and then change throughout the day) then open all windows you can again late evening/night time to air again. Makes a huge difference to keeping the house cooler.

Same here. Windows & curtains closed since 10am. Current temperature indoors 22C, outdoors 29C. Lovely 😊.
