Windows open or closed?

We're having a very boring debate! DH says, it's a hot day, open the windows to let a breeze through. I say, it's currently cooler indoors than outside, keep the windows closed so we aren't letting the hotter air in. Who is right?

28C outside and 25/26C in at the moment.

Keep the closed otherwise all you do is let warm air in- close curtains if sun shines directly in.i started doing this last year as we moved to a south facing house and the poor dogs were melting- it works and keep the temp inside much more bearable

RedCatBlueCat · 24/06/2020 13:59

We threw everything open as soon as we got up. Shut windows and curtains on sunny side of the house when the sun started streaming through. Will open again once the sun has shifted.
Still get a bit of a breeze because the N side of the house has windows.

CatToddlerUprising · 24/06/2020 14:00

@PrincessButtockUp

Close windows and curtains on the side in the sun. Have them open on the shade side. Change as the sun moves round. HTH.
I do this too- Mediterranean style
AriettyHomily · 24/06/2020 14:03

Windows open on shady side with shutters shut. Will change this over later.

DH seems to think that we should have the shutters open to allow air to flow through. THERE IS NO AIR TO FLOW THROUGH!!!!

CarolVordermansArse · 24/06/2020 14:04

Windows open, curtains/blinds closed with a gap to let air through.

I also have bug nets to keep insects out and cats in/out depending on who they belong to. Saves chasing flies and mosquitoes about in the middle of the night when they decide to wake up and plague me.

GreenFairy246 · 24/06/2020 14:09

Windows and curtains closed since this morning - it's a lovely 20.6 inside and 31 outside. Keeping all the heat and flies out.

I heard that it's what they do in the med and it certainly works for me.

Angelonia · 24/06/2020 14:09

Open here!

happytodayhappytomorrow · 24/06/2020 14:11

We had to close the house up today as we had some workmen here doing messy /smelly work outside and I closed the curtains upstairs at the same time as I closed all the windows. Downstairs all the windows are closed and the house is lovely and cool.

megletthesecond · 24/06/2020 14:13

Windows open.
Curtains closed on the sunny side. I swop mine over at lunchtime.

CMOTDibbler · 24/06/2020 14:14

WIndows/curtains shut on the sunny side, open on the shaded. As soon as the sun is out of the windows, everything open and fans on.
I couldn't bear to have everything shut in the day

jamaisjedors · 24/06/2020 14:14

Closed. Had this battle with my mum last year in the heatwave. Angry

She kept throwing everything open and I was closing curtains and windows.

She is Irish though and what works in a "heatwave" in Ireland is not suitable for 30 degrees + Grin

Am in France, as others said, doors and windows open till 9am, then blinds and windows closed till tonight.

21 degrees inside, 35 outside!!

GameSetMatch · 24/06/2020 14:14

All windows open, curtains closed! You need to open all the windows for the benefit a free flow of air.

Thesunrising · 24/06/2020 14:16

Windows open, curtains closed. All throughout the house. Internal doors open and let the hot air rise through the house or get sucked up through loft windows (if you have them) If you’ve got sash windows open them equal amounts top and bottom - cooler air gets drawn in, warmer air flows out.

starfishmummy · 24/06/2020 14:16

Our house is still cool compared to outside and we have windows open.

minou123 · 24/06/2020 14:17

@Iwantacookie

Closed to stop flys. Flys themselves arent the issue. The 2 cats trashing my house to catch said flys are why they're closed
Are you living in my house Iwantacookie Grin

I have to move all valuables from surfaces when a fly enters the house. The cats use window sills and tables to launch from to catch the flys Hmm

weepingwillow22 · 24/06/2020 14:25

People that have curtains closed but windows open during the day, what temperature are your houses at the moment?

The average for those of us with curtains and windows closed seems to be about 20 to 22 degrees.

Defenbaker · 24/06/2020 14:27

Closed windows and curtains/blinds covering them until dusk, then open windows to get the breeze in. Keep curtains and blinds covering windows to reduce insects coming in at night.

Ideally I'd like fly screens at every window, but haven't seen ones that would be practical (seems you have to lift/partly remove screen to reach the handle?).

TheSandman · 24/06/2020 14:28

Depends on if there are midges. Trouble is, the little fuckers like hot muggy days. The very days you need the windows open to catch any zephyrs. So on average doors and windows closed is safer.

ExpletiveDelighted · 24/06/2020 14:55

Our windows have been open al day, curtains shut on the sunny side only, 23 inside and 31 outside. We're lucky as the sun goes round the side of the house where there are only a couple of small windows and the main rooms only get full sun early in the morning or late in the evening. I'm in the kitchen with the patio doors wide open as the sun won't get round for at least a couple more hours.

Floralnomad · 24/06/2020 15:21

@Defenbaker our midge screens are made to measure roller types so when the windows are closed they are all just away in the header cassette .

WiseOwl69 · 24/06/2020 16:39

Windows and curtains shut.

If it is 30c outside “airflow” isn’t going to cool down your house, it’s just going to raise the temperature inside.

Once it’s cool this evening we’ll open some windows and get some fresh air in then.

Like others in this thread with windows and curtains shut, my house is 22c inside and outside must be 30-32c.

grey12 · 24/06/2020 16:40

Windows open blinds closed

PhoneLock · 24/06/2020 16:45

Does it help to leave damp towels hanging in rooms?

It certainly helps to increase the humidity

nettytree · 24/06/2020 16:46

I don't think my windows have been shut upstairs for the last month. French doors are open all day till about 10pm. Cats eat all the flies.
