Would you be a Handmaid, Martha or Jezebel?

Re-watched some of the Handmaid's Tale and started thinking what I'd be if I lived in that world.

I'd be a Martha I think. I'm too old for them to choose me as a Handmaid and I think my lifestyle would ensure I got to be a Martha.

What were the criteria for Jezebels though?

I agree with MrsT, I'm surprised how many people have said they'd resist. Human history really does suggest different. There are always rebels but they are never the majority. Most people don't want to die and will do what they can to stay alive.

Well we can only say what we hope we would do in the event 🤷‍♀️ I find it quite heartening!

I would love to think I would be a brave resister but the two times I or my child have been in proper danger I literally froze 😁

The family member who turned out to be a hero in the war (and actually did give his life for others age 27) was a quiet unassuming academic beta Male type.

@mstswift maybe you should give yourself some credit, being a resistor isnt an on-the-spot thing. And if your children were taken from you, I think you would find willpower you didnt have before.

And the point she was making was that everyone can talk big about being heroes and saving the day whilst putting their own lives at risk, but the reality is a lot different.

MN has a lot of professional women. You would probably be given the opportunity to be an Aunt. Judging by large chunks of AIBU there are quite a lot of MNers who would jump at the chance.

I’d like to think I’d be helping the resistance, but in reality I think I’d probably be keeping my head down and trying to avoid trouble for me and my family. Especially so when I consider the possible consequences for my DC.

I didn't say I'd end up in the colonies through any brave act of resistance on my part! Simply that they'd look at my track record and send me straight there.

(Woman scientist - how dare a woman think? And in any case scientists are always first off to the gulag. Think of that darkly hilarious scene in the "Death of Stalin" where they can't find any competent doctors to attend to him because they've sent them all off to labour camps. And an agnostic - no wriggle room there. And an unmarried mother - but now post-menopausal so no use to anyone... Nope, it wouldn't be brave resistance that sent me there, it would simply be being me...)

Totally agree that there are quite a few posters on AIBU who'd be queuing up to be Aunts.

I'm too old to be a Handmaid, not suitable for Jezebel, not married, so not an Econo Wife, but I'm exceptionally good at cleaning things.

If not forced to work on the land until I drop dead, I'd be a Martha.
