Would you be a Handmaid, Martha or Jezebel?

Re-watched some of the Handmaid's Tale and started thinking what I'd be if I lived in that world.

I'd be a Martha I think. I'm too old for them to choose me as a Handmaid and I think my lifestyle would ensure I got to be a Martha.

What were the criteria for Jezebels though?

The show always surprised me with how multicultural Gilead was. In my mind those kind of sexist views go hand in hand with racism.

I'm a nurse, do they still need nurses?

We saw a fair bit inside a hospital in Season 3 and the only nurses were male nurses. Absolutely zero female staff.

A nurse of good moral stock might have a chance as an Aunt.

Season 4 was literally only 2 weeks into filming before they had to shut down and go home.

And they shoot in Toronto which is apparently one of the worst hit parts of Canada so its not safe to reopen for filming yet even though Vancouver has restarted filming work.

So I imagine it'll be 2021 at this rate. The subbreddit scratches my itch for discussion in the meantime. At this stage it could be my Mastermind subject, lol.

I don't know what I'd be. I'm 44 but youngest child is only 3, and I have three of them. Would they take a punt on me still being fertile as a handmaid? If not, it would be the colonies, I assume, as DP and I are sinfully unmarried.

Although, given my detailed apocalypse planning, I would have scarpered a long time ago.

I’m too young to be a Martha. Never been married, never been pregnant so don’t have any proven fertility but I have regular periods. I’m a midwife so they’d need my skills as they desperately need living babies. So I think they’d take their chance on having me as a Handmaid and use me to be at all the other Handmaids labours. And if they go wrong or I don’t produce a baby, I’ll be off to the colonies.

I’d probably be a handmaiden 🤷‍♀️ Still if child bearing age, I’m assuming I’m still ovulating.

Dh & I were married in a coe church, but our first dc was born out of wedlock so I’m not sure what they would do with us.

Handmaid if they’ll take me at 39 (2 children, proven fertile, regular periods) if not the colonies (married 3 times, one child out of wedlock) If I had no hope of escaping the colonies before death I would kill myself.

But... 20s, very fertile, attractive and not educated past some fairly mediocre A levels.

Handmaid for sure! I've thought about this before and whichever way you slice it that's what I'd be. Once I got beyond my childbearing years I'd probably revert to a Martha.

Ah man, if I'm an adulterer because of DH's ex wife's inability to keep her knickers on, I'm really pissed off! Probably unwoman for me in that case. Too old and fat to be a Jezebel, too infertile for a handmaid, too much of an adulterer to be an econowife (plus I'm a widow so that would probably also rule me out even if the adultery didn't) and that would more than likely mean too immoral to be a Martha.

I assume I am fertile (never been impregnated, take contraception fastidiously and will never have a kid, by choice, under any circumstance.)
So possibly a handmaid, but probably picking my teeth out of the plug in the colonies.

I'm early 40's but still very likely fertile, so a handmaid most likely.

How do you get to be an Econowife? Don't they take all the children away to be given to childless Commanders and their wives or raised in institutions?

I'm 28 and single so would either be a handmaid or a Jezebel depending on my
fertility. Sigh. Never thought the label 'econowife' would sound so attractive

If you are a 'good' family, and the husband is working, then you get to stay together - they still need people to drive, work in shops, farm: all the jobs that go on, and having a wife and family to worry about keeps people in line. The children will then go on to be workers (boys) and econowives for them (girls)

Only the children of those deemed unworthy are taken, so children of lesbians, single mothers, second marriages and I guess immoral households (wrong religion etc) if you were married and had DC and were prepared to toe the line I guess you'd be a econowife

Hmm, well, Econowife if a registry office wedding was enough to get you through. If not, either a Handmaid (though I’m headed for 38, that might be too old) or a Martha. I guess my little boy would be taken, although he has ASD so he might not have too much of a chance either

I'm in my 50s. One marriage, in a church, children born in wedlock. DH is an engineer.

However we are Catholic so off with my head I suppose.

I'm a subversive bunny so if they didn't ship me off or shoot me I'd be helping run a rebellion and getting people out. My daughter is 13 so I'd want her out.

Hopefully we'd have seen this coming and left sharpish!
