Wondering if I could get out of going to work...

This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but with a heated discussion about root vegetables

Indoorcamping · 21/06/2020 09:12

I'd forgotten about the world ending. Regretting doing that washing up now.

Mr Tumble's getting turned off. Can't have that twat being the last thing i hear.

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 21/06/2020 09:15

The left wishing death on someone. Standard

How on earth do you know they are left

Are you stalking posters?

Constantlurker · 21/06/2020 09:17

I was about to go clean the toilets and bathrooms..bollocks to that if the world is ending today.

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 21/06/2020 09:21

I wasn't aware that Armageddon was scheduled for today! Stupid calendar makers. First they get the Bank Holiday wrong and now this!
Well that settles it. Dd is visiting today for social distancing father's day. I can hug her all I want and no fear of covid!
Roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast spuds, tons of gravy, homemade carrot cake, wine and no consequences of calories or hangover! Bring it on!!!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 21/06/2020 09:23

At the Vienna Christmas market they used to sell potatos unpeeled roasted in a hot steel barrel. - Lovely!

But if my last meal had to be potatoes, I'd want them peeled, sliced and roasted in a pan (preferably iron) with onions and bacon cubes like my DM used to make them.

RanchoRelaxo · 21/06/2020 09:30

@ErrolTheDragon

They may be very nice done like that, but surely the effect would be more like a chunky wedge (unpeeled spuds, lightly parboil, shake up with some oil, salt, pepper and smoked paprika or chilli powder). For a proper roastie, peel, parboil longer, shake up to roughen and dry off a bit, toss in hot fat of choice. Both very good, but not the same as each other. The first goes with sausages etc, the second with 'Sunday lunch' with gravy.

I think that discussion of South American vegetables is an entirely appropriate way to occupy this thread for however much is left of today.Grin

Parboil?! I always thought it was called part boil.. well theres something new I've learnt before the world ends
TARSCOUT · 21/06/2020 09:38

@prokupatuscrakedatus is that not just a baked potato then?
I feel slightly cheered the world is ending. Couldn't come at a better time! I'm having chips in that case Grin

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 21/06/2020 09:47

@Tarscout
That's the problem with semantics and MFLs Grin
A `'baked potatoe' to me is a Kumpir - tastes and looks totally different, but equally delicious.
Than theres a dish made from cooked potatoes fried in a pan,
fresh potatoes fried in a pan, and so on - I love potatoes!

ErrolTheDragon · 21/06/2020 09:50

I wasn't aware that Armageddon was scheduled for today!

It's not, the Mayans are getting their end of the world in ahead of the Christians version, having cunningly set things up centuries ago. OTOH, as the Christian version even more cunningly insists no one knows the day or the hour, they might yet be able sneak in ahead.

Whattheduck · 21/06/2020 09:55

Once you’ve par boiled your potatoes for roasts take the saucepan outside and shake them about then put into a dish that has hot oil in and put in the oven and you’ll have the best roast potatoes for your final meal before the world ends

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 21/06/2020 09:58

Whattheduck
I'll add this method to my list (for my potatoe filled afterlife of course...)

PrincessMaryaBolkonskaya · 21/06/2020 10:01

Have we decided on a time yet? My house is filthy and I’m not wasting energy on it if the sun won’t rise tomorrow.

DasPepe · 21/06/2020 10:03

Fat from instilling fear, this thread is making me hungry. What shall I have as the last meal?

DasPepe · 21/06/2020 10:05

Far! From instilling fear! Not fat.

But now I want bacon and plenty of butter

Mascotte · 21/06/2020 10:07

I love potatoes too. As it's the last day, I'm going to have mash with chips.

FlamingoAndJohn · 21/06/2020 10:08

I remember back in 1991 the world was meant to end about half way through my maths GCSE. We all stopped at the time it was going to end. It didn’t.

VettiyaIruken · 21/06/2020 10:08

I hope it's not till after 1. I've got a huge bag of peanut m&ms coming this morning and I'm going out, I'm going out stuffed to the gills!

ErrolTheDragon · 21/06/2020 10:09

take the saucepan outside

Under the extractor will do, IME - and obviously don't take your spuds outside if it's raining, the point is to dry them. I suppose you could have a spud shaking gazebo by your door if you were a perfectionist.

Jeremyironsnothing · 21/06/2020 10:10

Last time the world was supposed to end, we were in the car, in the queue waiting to be checked in to Center parcs. We were counting down the seconds we had left in this earth. Now I would have been upset then, if we hadn't had our weekend.
This time, not so much. 2020 isn't really on the list as the best year. Potatoes don't feature on our menu today, so have no tuber concerns.

Proudpeacock · 21/06/2020 10:11

Definitely going to try the roastie method mentioned above. In which case if the world could wait until 7pm that would be great. I will enjoyed the trifle that is currently setting but not had to endure the horror of bedtime.

Lynda07 · 21/06/2020 10:12

I don't care, just hope I'm asleep.

incognitomum · 21/06/2020 10:15

I'm hkme alone today so have ordered a Sunday din from our local diner. Cornflake tart and custard to follow. Am glad I did now I know the world is going to end Smile 🌏

incognitomum · 21/06/2020 10:15

Home*

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 21/06/2020 10:17

I don't peel any more, and my roasties are not substandard ^

It's all in how you cut them. Then parboil, drain, leave until the steam has finished, shake in oil, then cook around the joint.

Potatoes fit for an apocalypse.

Mind you, if the world really is ending today, I'll probably just eat crisps.
