@rookiemere

Well also for holidays, as the infection rate is currently a lot higher in the UK than the rest of Europe, then it's surely safer from a covid point of view to visit say Amsterdam rather than Ambleside.
But PLANES are TUBES OF DEATH, rookie! How can you go talking sense in the face of that!

Like most of the back-to-school Dementing, I reckon holiday Dementing will be a butter statue in the sun of FOMO.

rookiemere · 22/06/2020 08:24

Seagoing It's the DCs that have been kept inside out of harms way that I feel most sorry for. At the moment DS 14 in our house is the most dementory about getting on a plane, but he'll doubtless get over himself when he sees the villa.

But as for the truly cautious where is safe ? I think the only truly safe option is wild camping in your own tent with wild food foraged and hunted yourself. Barbeque squirrel anyone ?

So instead another joyful couple of months of sitting at home, as surely attractions such as zoos and mini golf would also be heaving germ spots.

Spudlet · 22/06/2020 08:24

@LivinLaVidaLoki That’s true. I think this has definitely shown that there’s a huge gap in scientific education (definitely there is in mine!), but also that scientists need to be careful about how they get their messages out there, and the media and government even more so as they’re often the ones that distort or exaggerate or oversimplify things for headlines.

Teateaandmoretea · 22/06/2020 08:29

Planes may not be tubes of death but corona is more likely to be caught in one than in a car. I also think that all this ‘the UK’s worse than everywhere else’ isn’t helpful for optimistic thought. We are testing a lot and literally searching for deaths to attribute to it. A lot of covid originally came from ski resorts, where it was clearly covered up. It’s very trusting to assume that other countries counting is accurate.

Personally I wouldn’t go abroad this year, there is the risk of someone getting a temperature or cough and then the stress of not being allowed to travel back/ having to isolate in a hotel room/ navigate testing systems abroad. I’d rather just be able to get in the car and go straight home.

BogRollBOGOF · 22/06/2020 08:32

@NothingIsWrong

The worst one was me thinking that there was no point in being around any more. And me asking for help from people, and them all agreeing that while it was sad and they would miss me, I should probably just get on with it.
We need you. Flowers It's your subconcious working through fears, not a truth.

I was dreaming about a residential activites centre, definitely not true because they're still prohibited and it wasn't on the agenda anyway.
@NothingIsWrong, that sounds a horrible dream. DH gave me a card to keep in my purse which says Tell the Negative Committee in Your Head to Sit Down and Shut Up! If I knew you irl, I would hand it over to you.
Your DH sounds wonderful! It was just the very calm way that everyone agreed with me that this was a good idea. I have suffered with bad anxiety in the past, and a lot of it is to do with thinking I'm not good enough for anyone, and that everyones lives would be better without me around. This is just a scarier extension of that I think

BarkandCheese · 22/06/2020 08:34

This from the BBC today www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-53097289 . It won’t come as any surprise to most of us on this thread.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 22/06/2020 08:34

@LivinLaVidaLoki @Mascotte maybe these people are actually having a worse time of it than us? Being a novel virus we continue to learn about , there simply aren’t a huge volumes of the infamous “peer-reviewed papers” for them to fall back on - and as a result are having to consider using their own judgement...

Which leads me to the analogies of grief and abusive relationships - and the INDUSTRIAL SCALE gaslighting going on. “At least you’ve got an impostor”, “show some respect, you could be (sadly) dead”.

Our ability to make our own decisions and risk analysis has been largely removed from us.

Two sides of the same coin.

SockYarn · 22/06/2020 08:34

I think the only truly safe option is wild camping in your own tent with wild food foraged and hunted yourself.

But that's not safe either.

You could get a tick bite, develop Lyme disease AND DIE.
Or get attacked by a wild badger/deer/wildcat AND DIE
Or trip over the guy ropes, hit your head AND DIE.
Or not cook your dinner properly, get food poisoning AND DIE.

Nothing is safe, is it?We should have been going to Florida on Saturday and obviously we're not. First summer in forever where we're not getting any sort of holiday.

I always really struggle through the autumn and early winter with the nights getting darker and longer, it makes me very low, lethargic and teary. Usually this time of year is when i enjoy the long nights, the fact that you look out the window at midnight and away to the north there's still light in the sky. You can get out and do things, go places, see things. None of that this year.

It's going to be a LONG winter.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 22/06/2020 08:38

I had Lyme disease last year - would still leap at a bit of wild camping. The treatment for Lyme made me unable to leave the couch for about 6 weeks - I think you could all handle that by now.

Pleasedontdothat · 22/06/2020 08:38

@HesterShaw1 and @IAintentDead that’s shit and here’s hoping this next week is better. I’ve only spoken to my family this weekend but being the only neurotypical person in an ASD family can be quite lonely at times too. We have virtually no social life as a family - I have a few friends who I see on my own but invitations to us as a family dried up when the boys were small (and not very easy to take anywhere so I can’t really blame people for not wanting us there).

I’m feeling increasingly stressed about what I suspect is going to be mandatory mask-wearing in lieu of 2 metres. I hate seeing people in masks as it just underlines how completely Not Normal this all is. Apart from the fact that the vast majority of mask-wearing is purely performance and has zilch effect on virus transmission, I really struggle with understanding people when they talk to me with a mask on. I’m partially deaf but hadn’t realised until now how much I compensate by lip reading

NothingIsWrong · 22/06/2020 08:39

I'm sick of being told I should just be grateful to be alive. I'm not fucking grateful, it's the bare bloody minimum. I want all the rest of the rich crazy life I had before. And actually, it wasn't that much. A lovely team at work, a job I enjoyed, three kids who are all happy and healthy and enjoying school and friends, some sports, bit of running, gin night at the pub once a month, takeaway occasionally and a curry with friends sometimes. That ISN'T TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR.

Littlebelina · 22/06/2020 08:43

Yes but @SockYarn, they aren't covid deaths so don't countWink

Teateaandmoretea · 22/06/2020 08:44

Nothing is safe, is it?

Absolutely right.

We all need to individually risk assess and make up our own minds about what to do. The issue is when people who have different opinions and so do different things start accusing others of being wrong/ murder etc ....

Nihiloxica · 22/06/2020 08:45

If I can get abroad easily, to a sunny country with open bars & restaurants, I'm going.

Anything to get out of Dementorland.

We often holiday in these islands and I used to love it, but being stuck here while everything is shut or half shut and you need to sign into the pub? No thanks.

Planes are no more tubes of death now than they were last year.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 22/06/2020 08:49

ASD mother slowly turning catatonic because I haven’t had more than 20 minutes to myself since feb... and as an extra special gift I’m now hearing the resumption of network rail’s piling drill. It’s the size of a crane and basically hammers deep into the ground in a rhythmic manner approx. Every 2 seconds.

I am going to pre-load migraine pills right now.

They started with this tool a week before lockdown and at least then I could escape.they sent out letters last week saying they were restarting. I don’t even back on to the railway ffs - I have no idea how those families are coping.

peaceanddove · 22/06/2020 08:51

Just heard on the radio that Tui are offering European holidays again from July 14th! Apparently they are '100% confident that travel restrictions will be lifted by then'. Surely they wouldn't do this unless they've been tipped the wink by someone in government?

Nihiloxica · 22/06/2020 08:51

I am properly scared of Lyme disease. You can't catch it in a death tube.

I'm sick of being told I should just be grateful to be alive.

It reminds me of when women have awful, traumatic births that leave them seriously wounded and they are expected not to complain but be grateful that they and (far more importantly) the baby ARE SAFE.

Um, how is having your nether regions ripped apart and PTSD considered "safe" now?

It's such a weasel word.

DrearyWallAntler · 22/06/2020 08:52

FYI - don't bbq squirrel, it's quite a tough meat. You want to sear it and bung in a stew with a healthy glug of red wine or bourbon.

You could cook on a bbq low and slow I guess, but being wild meat you would definitely want it well done.

Just, you know, in case you need to know.

Drivingdownthe101 · 22/06/2020 08:54

Like most of the back-to-school Dementing, I reckon holiday Dementing will be a butter statue in the sun of FOMO

Interestingly, the parents from DD2’s reception class who said it wasn’t SAFE for their children to go back last week, and advised us all to do the same as them as it wasn’t SAFE, have all sent their kids back today. They caved after a week.

Bollss · 22/06/2020 08:55

@DrearyWallAntler

Little Wall antlers school is still holding inset days.

Are you fucking kidding me right now? There hasn't been enough time for cpd, lesson planning and assorted paperwork over the last three months?

DS won't start full time reception until the 21st September. On the w/c the 7th he gets a whole hour and 30 minutes In school. The next week he's just doing mornings and then eventually ft.

Like we've not had enough pissing around now we've got even more!

Me too. I am so incredibly sad about it Sad

rookiemere · 22/06/2020 08:58

Drearywallantler DH bought a squirrel from a stall holder at our local foodie market once back in the pre covid days when they were allowed. I - being somewhat squeamish- refused to be near it, DH tried to fry it stinking out the kitchen, and in the end even rookiedog - who spends most of his waking hours chasing the aforementioned rodent - refused to eat the carcass.

Teateaandmoretea · 22/06/2020 08:59

The other thing re holidays anyway is I am quite happy to go on holiday in the UK. A lot of people need guaranteed hot weather etc, I enjoy walking (yes even now 😂), cycling, love the UK. Yes there are some irritating people, but most aren’t dementors most are like us.

Drivingdownthe101 · 22/06/2020 09:02

The sole reason we won’t be rearranging our flights to Spain is the mask situation. I wont be able to deal with three hours plus in a mask, and I don’t think the DC will be able to either. Plus no hand luggage meaning nothing to distract a 6, 4 and 1 year old for the journey. No thanks.
We’ve booked a couple of things in the UK instead.
