The numbers from Spain especially are a bit suspect

Great minds think alike. Just as they are trying to get tourists back Wink

OhFuckOffWithTheBubbleBollocks · 21/06/2020 20:22

WAIT. Shut up about coronavirus for a minute everyone...

Aldi Battenberg cake you say? @countrygirl99 is it good? Asking for a friend Wink

PS @RobinHobb I couldn't agree more. I particularly liked the advice about using a separate bathroom and bedroom if you can. Fuck OFF.

Teateaandmoretea · 21/06/2020 20:22

We just need to use Trump logic. If we test less people then we will have a lower rate of infection

🤔 it’s one strategy for sure...

Rubychard · 21/06/2020 20:23

@IAintentDead
Thanks for explaining it even better than the article.

RobinHobb · 21/06/2020 20:31

@ohFuckoffwiththebubblesbollocks
It is bonkers. I have thrown the letter in the bin but it really made me grind my teeth when I read the bbc headline a few weeks ago saying the shielding are "allowed" to go for walks. Fuck off with that.
On the brighter side if there is a vaccine I'm hoping the shielded are prioritised :-)

Drivingdownthe101 · 21/06/2020 20:32

And if we stop testing at all, the whole thing just goes away 🤷🏻‍♀️

rookiemere · 21/06/2020 20:32

Teateanadmoretea yes I think other countries may be using different methods for reporting- certainly for deaths. It makes little sense that the Spaniards are welcoming us back - I know they're desperate for tourist spending and all - but why would you be keen to let in country makers from somewhere with much higher ongoing infections and deaths?

countrygirl99 · 21/06/2020 20:35

ohfuckoff definitely recommended. Really good marzipan, but the germans do take marzipan seriously. Tell your friend to get down to Aldi.

Dowser · 21/06/2020 20:38

Robinhobb
Was anti dementor central in seaham today

No one’s bothered.
Just getting on with life

Dowser · 21/06/2020 20:41

Never watched the news for years, certainly wasn’t going to watch any While the doom and gloom was on.

I couldn’t even tell you what the rules are.
They are so petty I couldn’t care less

NannyPhlegm · 21/06/2020 20:42

@RobinHobb I personally take the idea that we should have locked down earlier with a pinch of salt. India locked down very much earlier in their graph, before a single death had occurred. Three months later, the population tired of the lockdown and also ran out of money (their economic package was focused on the poorest and was haphazard in execution). The lockdown has had to be lifted right as they hit their peak.

India is a fascinating case. They have a superb track record of suppressing infectious diseases. Have you heard of the Nipah virus in 2018, a novel virus that emerged in a southern states in India? If you haven't, it's because India quashed it at source with localised lockdowns.
Why they followed other countries with a national lockdown when they have established protocols, is a mystery to me.

Teateaandmoretea · 21/06/2020 20:52

I think the 2 major mistakes the UK made were:

  1. Not testing people with symptoms in Feb unless they’d been to Wuhan or Italy despite the fact it was obviously spreading. This gave covid a head start and gave the impression there were heads in the sand
  2. Not protecting care homes adequately.

If we’d done both of those I think it would have saved a lot of lives. I’m really not convinced that lockdown is ever going to be the answer, because it is a real desperation measure. PPE was an issue too, but presumably if we’d tried to stock it people would have objected due to environmental concerns.

MagdaS · 21/06/2020 20:54

The idea that the Xmas party is now a disease ridden thing of the past really depresses me. Ours are legendary and I missed out on last year’s because BoJo was kind enough to call an election and I had to count votes.

MagdaS · 21/06/2020 20:59

My BIL linked to a really interesting journal article which modelled Covid spread in different scenarios and that said a lockdown too early is the worst thing to do as you just end up straight back into a peak the minute it’s lifted.

NannyPhlegm · 21/06/2020 21:00

Actually I hate the word LOCKDOWN, and it's unnerving that it's become an easy part of the lexicon. When novel infectious diseases hit in the East, it's localised quarantine that is implemented. As teatea says, national "lockdowns" are desperate measures and we really shouldn't allow it to become normalised

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 21/06/2020 21:03

I think a lot of countries went for lockdown as a result of political peer pressure. Everyone else is doing it! If they hadn't, and the results were bad, it would be politically terrible for the government of that country. There's a lot of strength in numbers - and governments around the world will be justifying lockdown as the right course of action for years to come.

Orangeblossom78 · 21/06/2020 21:12

What tea said along with testing people off planes as well. there were no checks. and then maybe a milder lockdown such as in Holland which was like ours but just asked to instead of told, and more shops stayed open and work places. and earlier. No big events such as Crufts / Balf Half / cheltenham as well.

Orangeblossom78 · 21/06/2020 21:12

Agreed Totally

(I hope you all knew I was being sarcastic about the Trump approach)

Yup

Swam in the sea again today. I needed it after a ferocious row with DH who was am absolute dick yesterday. Nearly tipped me back to the bad place.

How's your Dad, SirSam?

Teateaandmoretea · 21/06/2020 21:16

Ah yes I was forgetting about the Cheltenham festival that too

I hope you all knew I was being sarcastic about the Trump approach

Yes 😁

rookiemere · 21/06/2020 21:23

The thing that gives me the rage about lockdown now, is that whilst we all sat in apart from our weekly bit of socialising to clap for the NHS, planes were still arriving from -at the time- highly infected countries such as Italy and China, and according to my friend who's on border control and other sources these folks just walked off the plane and into a taxi, tube or bus without a single check on the,

And yet now that infection rates are dropped and your average British pleb would like to go on holiday abroad i.e. me , now they've decided mandatory quarantine is a good idea. You couldn't make it up.

Nihiloxica · 21/06/2020 21:24

Speaking of Cheltenham, I thought you might enjoy this:

Breast Cancer Checks to Restart if Carried Out Alongside Lasagne and Chips

For context - in Ireland when pubs open you will have to buy a meal costing €9 in order to be allowed to drink.

For more context - nearly 20% of the Cheltenham crowd had travelled from Ireland.

Horse (and greyhound) racing was the first thing to restart.

rookiemere · 21/06/2020 21:24

Sorry I see that Orangeblossom already made that point.

Similarly the same bullshit with face masks. Only now do we have to wear face masks on public transports 🤦‍♀️ It makes no sense.
