Box dye madness.

Hey everyone.

I dyed my hair “dark chocolate” and it’s gone black. Is it possible to lighten it? And if so, how? I’ve read about clarifying shampoos, bicarbonate or soda and vitamin c tablets, but wondering if they actually work?

I was originally blonde (bleached) but couldn’t be bothered bleaching it all the time so just thought I’d pop a dye on and let it grow out, now I look like I’m a wanna be punk. /:

If anyone has any tips, I’d be so grateful.

Thank you. (:

I gave up and have now got a salt and peppery look. apart from my fringe which seems to want stay a copper colour!

Am going to go the whole hog and see what happens. Three months in and no weddings or anything to go to so can try it out! DP is hilarious, says he doesn't notice anything different at all, the baldy bastard.

Best of luck with all the great suggestions here.

I’ve washed it again, and it’s starting to fade. However, I’m now starting to see ginger 😖

I think what I don’t like about it is that it’s quite dull, if it had a shine I could like it. But it looks so matte.

Odd that it's not shiny. Fresh dyed hair is normally like a mirror.

Have you put a mask or coconut oil?

@DonaldJTrumpet hey sweets. I haven’t done either. Literally just washed it and popped conditioner on. I’m off to b&m later so might see what they have.

Bodgedboxdye · 20/06/2020 15:31

Thanks, sorry I don't have any idea advice on lightening yours. I usually find it lightens after a couple of washes and I haven't rtft.

I'm sure it looks lovely though 😊

DonaldJTrumpet · 20/06/2020 15:57

There's a tub of hair mask. Brown with a green lid and it's argon oil. That's what I use. Only £1!!!! X

EngagedAgain · 20/06/2020 22:18

OP in my experience (and I've had alot of diy disasters 😂) if you put any colour on top of bleached hair it does tend to be dull. Also over washing it won't help. Not quite sure what solution is other than a good conditioner. I wouldn't use harsh products to wash it trying to get colour out.

Bodgedboxdye · 20/06/2020 23:04

@EngagedAgain after today, I’m just going to leave it. The colour doesn’t seem too bad now.

I think I’m over the shock of being so dark. I’m still going to wash it daily as I do that anyway but will probably leave all the other stuff to more desperate times. Grin

My daughter dyed her hair dark blue Hmm Best trick is the vit C tablets with head and shoulders. 2 washes and more or less back to her normal mousey brown

MuthaHubbard · 21/06/2020 14:06

Oh and a really decent conditioner afterwards (ie my aussie miracle one!)

Teacuplady86 · 21/06/2020 14:07

If you were blonde it’ll fade quickly. Don’t worry. Same happened to me and now it’s a beautiful caramel colour (about 4 weeks later)

The initial panic caused tears Grin

Teacuplady86 · 21/06/2020 14:09

The sun will lighten it too. You may need to dye it again in a few weeks (Urban Brown is a nice colour)

Bodgedboxdye · 21/06/2020 14:51

@Teacuplady86 which make is it please?

@MuthaHubbard thank you, I defo need a good conditioner, it feels a little dry at the min. /:

Schwarzkopf I think. Have a Google Smile

DonaldJTrumpet · 21/06/2020 19:27

I redyed mine and just used that red Schwarzkopf one that's only £2. You don't get a conditioner with it but it's £2. And really good. Used two boxes. Went medium brown. DP went and got in the shower as I was meant to be washing it off. Kept it on for 13 mins longer than I wanted to so it was dark again 😫

Really recommend that cheap brand anyway. Think it's poly tint.

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 21/06/2020 19:32

If I wanted to fade dye, I’d wash it loads using head and shoulders or something else unfriendly to dye.

I always buy ‘dark brown’ box dye, because it’s pretty much exactly the same colour as my actual hair. So it covers the grey bits and otherwise looks like my hair. I had 4” of roots last time I bothered and you’d never have known if there wasn’t a bloody grey streak coming through.

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 21/06/2020 19:33

And I definitely do not want the grey streak to stay. Because I’d risk looking like a badger.

Bodgedboxdye · 21/06/2020 20:01

@ExtremelyBoldSquirrels, that’s so like me, I have a streak of grey and grey scattered around.

Yup, I’m normally quite dark, people would say it’s nearer black but this ended up looking too dark. It’s madness. 😁😁

@DonaldJTrumpet no way, I’d have been gutted. 😖
