When I first read Harry Potter I thought it was 'hermy-own' - was gobsmacked when I heard how it was pronounced when the films started coming out! I also thought mirror of Erised was pronounced 'i-rye-sd'

OP posts:
whynotwhen · 20/06/2020 16:31

Watching American teen tv when I was younger I was always puzzled as to what 'bolony' sandwiches were, turns out it's Bologna sausage meat??!

SlothRunner · 20/06/2020 16:32

My friend pronounced metropolis as metro pop olis 😂😂😂😂

whynotwhen · 20/06/2020 16:35

Beauchamp place next to harrods... I pronounced 'bow-schump' until a friendly cabbie let me know it's beachum. English words are odd. Especially place names! Worcestershire anyone??

SlothRunner · 20/06/2020 16:38

@PuppyMonkey

Have we had how to pronounce the surname Featherstonehaugh yet? I once had to ring a very posh lady with that surname and she was not impressed at my efforts at all...

It's pronounced Fanshaw, for those who might need to know one day.

How does Fanshaw come from that 🤔
notso · 20/06/2020 16:41

As a child,
Blancmange- Blank mange
Phoebe- Fobe to rhyme with lobe.
Chaos- chay-oes
Geoffrey- Geo- free
Enid- En-id
Margot- Mar-got
Hugo- Huggo
viola - veeola

Then we moved to Wales and I pronounced most things wrong Grin

DH calls a cagoule a caggle and a gillet a gill-et. When I first went to a restaurant with him ordered a deep fried bry (Brie) and cadgun (Cajun) chicken

DH's Nan says Whiffy for WiFi and calls Dunelm Mill Dooonell Mill.

Best friend says pompadoms and will not be corrected.

I never know how to say chipotle chip-olay, chip-ottlee, chipottle?

SlothRunner · 20/06/2020 16:48

My friend called Dunelm Mill Dull-Um Mill.

MrsMoastyToasty · 20/06/2020 16:53

As a child I had to read the word molesting for a reading test. I read it as mole sting.

I live in a town that isn't pronounced as it's spelled.
It's Keynsham, but is pronounced Cane Shum. There used to be an advert where it was spelled out (before my time). The most recent mangling of the pronunciation I've heard recently was Kirstie Allsopp when they were doing a recent episode of LLL and she pronounced it Keeen A Sham.

PuppyMonkey · 20/06/2020 16:54

@SlothRunner beats the heck out of me, but I can assure you it’s correct.Grin

Fifthtimelucky · 20/06/2020 17:18

When I was young I thought that lapel rhymed with label. I also thought that khaki was pronounced cakey. I was aware of a word pronounced carkey, but didn't realise that it was spelled khaki.

Like others, when I first saw 'lingerie' I assumed it was pronounced 'lingeree'

@steppemum: the English equivalent of a French Marquis is a Marquess. The best example I can think of is the Marquess of Bath, who owns Longleat. And your pronunciation was correct!

lootsharks · 20/06/2020 17:20

@sashh

In my 20s I thought the name Siobhan was pronounced Si-o-ban until I heard someone else say it!

I once went into a patient waiting area and called, "Siobhan X" to come through. She just looked at her mother who stared back, I asked what was wrong, Siobhan was 14 and I was the first person to get it right.

But then I went to school with a Dymphna and regularly travelled through Mythelmroyd.

You mean mytholmroyd
notso · 20/06/2020 17:22

Coincidentally DH has just been looking up a local National Trust place online and said
"Hey Notso have you heard of Oona-med Road"
Me "no"
Him "It says [NT property] is just off oona-med road, it's right next to the pub, look..."
Me, looking at the map laughing my head off "it's UN-NAMED road" GrinGrin

RedRec · 20/06/2020 17:44

I had a friend at work who was a keen golfer. One day, don't know why, I was reading an article out loud from his golfing magazine. Much merriment ensued when I got to a piece about someone having double bogeyed a shot and pronounced it bogg - eyed (as if it was some sort of affliction of the eye) instead of boageed (like something that comes out of your nose).
Took a good few weeks to live that one down.

hazelnutlatte · 20/06/2020 17:51

Pseudo = suede-O in my mind
I had to use this word a lot at work at one point - even when corrected (multiple times) by my boss I just couldn't help but pronounce it incorectly!

tabulahrasa · 20/06/2020 19:00

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

Ooh, yes - a lot of typewriters (and even some people when writing by hand) used to do a regular 'z' with a 'flourish' underneath - as a child, I always thought it looked like they'd stuck a '3' directly underneath the 'z'.

I'd completely forgotten that!

That’s how I write a lowercase z, lol
LoosingBattle · 20/06/2020 20:19

I played Mon O Poly today
GrinYou played Monopoly
HmmNo. Mon O Poly, must be a different game.

Smile
Chicchicchicchiclana · 20/06/2020 20:51

How would you pronounce the girl's name Viola?

If I'd had another girl this would have been high on my list of favourite girl names.

But only if everyone pronounced it VI-ola not vi-OLA iyswim. Should be pronounced in the Shakespearean way.

MillicentMartha · 20/06/2020 21:15

Vee - OLA is the instrument,
VI - ola is the name, at least I think so.

merryhouse · 20/06/2020 21:50

Viola the name is from the flower, which is VIE-ola.

Very few people are named after musical instruments Grin

Alexindiamondarmour · 20/06/2020 22:59

Speaking to a guy I kind of liked in my 20s and I was trying to sound smart and said “we have a plethora of those” and pronounced it “ple-thor-a” instead of “pleh-thuh-ruh”

He laughed and said “a what?? Do you mean plethora??” Oh the shame.

testing987654321 · 20/06/2020 23:03

Is it not ple-Thor-a?? This thread is doing my head in.

Alexindiamondarmour · 20/06/2020 23:07

No!! Google it - like I just had to do to remind myself - and it’s not! No focus on the THOR!

bunnyrabbit93 · 20/06/2020 23:13

I've always thought the saying "I cant be arsed "was" I cant be asked "

Alexindiamondarmour · 20/06/2020 23:14

I also get Mariner and Marina mixed up. My DH has chuckled in the past when I’ve said “look at all the boats in the mariner” and I’ve pronounced it mar-in-err. Unfortunately I now get confused about them every single time so avoid saying them out loud now.

TheHighestSardine · 20/06/2020 23:23

I still call my friend Penelope peenalope to rhyme with antelope.

stellabelle · 21/06/2020 01:04

I always say nugget - grew up in Devon. My parents had a sweet shop and they sold the stuff - they always said nugget too. Noo - gah always sounds affected to me.
