Dp had an ingrown hair 3 weeks ago that has suddenly decided to go bananas. I’ve forced him to call his GP and waiting a call back, but wondering if any MNers could shed some light in the meantime!

Op we are definitely 100% going to need progress photos. For science reasons.

Yorkiee · 19/06/2020 12:25

Looks like botfly.. just watched so many videos :/

I had something similar on my butt cheek which I initially thought was an ingrowing hair. Saw my GP who sent me to hospital with a letter. I had surgery about 3 hours later to rinse it all out/clean it and stayed overnight in hospital.
It was all fine actually and a quick procedure. I also had no temperature or any other signs of infection. Hopefully it’s the same thing.

TeddyIsaHe · 19/06/2020 12:26

Ok so he’s been prescribed flucloxacillian (sp?) for a week, and to call back if it gets worse. Dr didn’t say what it was Confused

TeddyIsaHe DH is the same. Gets lots of what he calls 'superficial' wounds at work which most people would be horrified about but plays them right down. No i don't want a plaster. No i don't need to wash it. No i'm not going for stitches. No i don't need it sewn back on ... ect.

BUT the slightest thing like a bit of wind or a snotty nose and he's rolling about the place in his robe in the fetal position GrinGrin

Pussycatinboots · 19/06/2020 12:29

We need hourly photo updates to see if his leg does drop off...

That's an antibiotic used to treat skin wounds and infections
Laiste · 19/06/2020 12:30

x post. Hope it clears up quick.

TeddyIsaHe · 19/06/2020 12:33

I don’t want to share a bed with him tonight in case something crawls out of it Grin

I would draw a line around it as others have said, so that you can see if it's tracking. Even now he's started antiobiotics. My friend got a blister from new shoes and ended up with cellulitis and was admitted to hospital for IV antibiotics. These things can turn nasty very suddenly.

andyoldlabour · 19/06/2020 12:36

That looks like a marsh tick to me.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 19/06/2020 12:37

Agree with drawing a line round it with a sharpie or similar. Keep an eye for any red trails coming off it too.

Justaboy · 19/06/2020 12:39

Thats not a Botfly had one of them years ago after a trip to a remote part of Kenya! And it was before they were on youtube there're soo many Vids of Pimple Poppin and the like what is it with people???

Its true though that things do burrow into the skin and live there and come out when they are to fly away. There is a Vid of a poor puppy that so loaded with grubs he's strugging to stay alive but there is a kindely vet who gets them all out and most time puppy Dog and sometimes Cat survives!

Glad theres a lot of things over there which aren't here:!

I think your old man will live!!

MoominKitty · 19/06/2020 12:40

Looks like my mates false widow bite, I got to squeeze the shit out of it for him before we knew as we thought it was just an ingrown hair. Ended up having it cut out and dressed as never healed on its own in the end though....

VickyEadieofThigh · 19/06/2020 12:42

Definitely infected. Seek medical help soonest.

ChubbyPigeon · 19/06/2020 12:42

You draw a line round it to see how quickly its spreading. It doesnt tell you if you need antibiotics it tells you if you need iv antibiotics now or just oral abx. Any swelling I would always recommend drawing a line around.

If its spreading fast I would go to A&E rather than wait for the GP to see you.

Now you have the antibiotics you can see if its getting worse or better by drawing a line around it. You still want to monitor it

MangosteenSoda · 19/06/2020 12:43

What's the scale? Is that a really close up photo, or is that hole as big as it looks?

MangosteenSoda · 19/06/2020 12:46

Oh God, I just googled botfly infection off the back of this thread. I'm going to need counselling now and I normally love a good bit of sporn.

ilovebagpuss · 19/06/2020 12:49

Ingrown hairs can cause a type of boil that then bursts my dad had one it had to be packed and dressed for ages.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/06/2020 12:49

Good he's on the a/b now (Fluclox is commonly given as a soft tissue skin infection a/b)
YY to draw round and monitor the redness .
YY to check temps and look for redness spreading .

Could be a tick bite , look at info about the "BullsEye" mark.
Its the right time of year , they like damp conditions , people gardening or walking through long grass .
If he's had a pick at it he couldn't dislodged the tick and left the head .

There are hrrible side effects if not treated so great you've got early intervention.
Keep a eye on it .

(I'd yes I'd want to sleep in a different room too ) Wink

Mary1935 · 19/06/2020 12:50

Does it not need any covering over it? To stop it getting reinfected.
I hope the gp knows what he/she is doing as it looks like a hole to me!!!
Good luck.

Magic2020 · 19/06/2020 12:51

Not a botfly larva or myiasis as the black bit would be a spiracle (breathing mouthpart)

SunshinePeekingThrough · 19/06/2020 12:51

Please draw a line around it. He needs to see a doctor with this and get this treated. Without treatment this could be extremely serious

Magic2020 · 19/06/2020 12:52

Also very rare in this country.
