Where is all the soy sauce?

It's been weeks now!

Why can't I buy soy sauce? Where has all the soy sauce gone? Who hoards it?

@summerfish really annoying isn’t it. I’ve had to buy it from my local petrol station recently but it’s M&S so costs me 3 times as much.

mbosnz · 19/06/2020 09:45

Have you looked on Amazon? I got a box of gf soy sauce off there, when I couldn't find it elsewhere. Just a thought!

WhoAteAllTheDinosaurs · 19/06/2020 09:47

In the Asian supermarkets? And it's cheaper?

I saw a massive one at Costco yesterday.

mbosnz · 19/06/2020 09:50

The Asian supermarkets are a gem - when there was the run on tinned tomatoes, there they were, plentifully stocked! Along with rice, pasta. . . and lovely fresh produce and an amazing range, too.

AvoidingRealHumans · 19/06/2020 09:50

No problem getting any soy sauce here... vanilla extract hasn't been seen for 3 months though

blueskys72 · 19/06/2020 09:51

It's in the same black hole as the Frosties!!

Lovelydovey · 19/06/2020 09:53

The same place as the tinned sweet corn!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/06/2020 09:54

I really struggled to get Lea and Perrins the other week, had to get Sainsbury's own in the end. Apparently a yeast shortage is having an impact on a lot of things.

BarbaraofSeville · 19/06/2020 09:55

I have one of the massive Costco ones in my cupboard so haven't noticed if there is a shortage, I wonder what's causing it? Increased demand or shortage due to a production issue? Is it imported from China and it's just not got here? Perhaps I should decant some of mine into nice little small bottles and sell it as artisan soy sauce?

I'm constantly surprised at the things that COVID-19 has caused to come into short supply. Toilet rolls and beans at the beginning was a bit obvious, but other ones have been a bit weird and unexpected, although logical when you see how people's behaviours have changed and they're doing much more at home and looking at ways to entertain themselves.

I've just sold an 8 YO stand mixer that I rarely used for more than I paid for it because a lot of them seem to be out of stock or hard to get hold of at least, presumably due to the number of people at home baking cakes.

yearinyearout · 19/06/2020 09:58

Our local Chinese take always sell it.

anothermansmother · 19/06/2020 10:12

Try a local store rather than a supermarket. Although soy sauce has been plentiful its vanilla extract for us too. Thankfully our local bakery stocks vanilla paste so I got it from them.

Whistlingtrees · 19/06/2020 10:20

Iceland had it the last time I was in.

I use a lot of soy sauce in recipes, no trouble purchasing this. It's ketchup that's been hard to get hold of.

MilkshakeandFries · 19/06/2020 10:30

Haven't been able to get sweet chilli sauce anywhere either!

blueskys72 · 19/06/2020 11:12

@Keepyourdistance2m it's ridiculous isn't it! Finally managed to get a box of store's own this week but that's the first one for at least a month! Kids have had to convert to Shreddies and Cheerios Grin

ritasueandbob · 19/06/2020 11:15

Co op or Aldi had it here none in Tesco or Sainsbury though why the shortage?

summerfish · 19/06/2020 12:58

We are still minimising time in public so are tied to Tesco click and collect at the moment.

Every week or so they get my hopes up by allowing me to add soy sauce to my order before failing to actually give me any.

The cheeky rascals.

In the same place as chickpeas

Glitters100 · 19/06/2020 13:07

@anothermansmother try Aldi for vanilla extract, they had a whole shelf, full of bottles of it (for 85p I think), it’s the first time in 3 months I’ve seen it to buy- and I check every week as we have to cook and bake everything due to so many allergies in the family.

Glitters100 · 19/06/2020 13:08

and above message for @AvoidingRealHumans

Lindy2 · 19/06/2020 13:08

I know what you mean. I've just done an Asda order and absolutely no soy sauce available again. I can live without it but I just can't quite work out, why of all products, soy sauce has disappeared.

Apolloanddaphne · 19/06/2020 13:11

In my supermarket (Morrisons) I cannot get soy sauce or mirin in the 'normal' branded Chinese section but strangely can get in the tiny section that has authentic Chinese products.

AhCheeses · 19/06/2020 13:13

I can't get Tesco own brand cornflakes in the big 75p boxes, Heinz spaghetti hoops with sausages, tomato purée with garlic or risotto rice! All vanished from Tesco shelves.
Haven't looked for soy sauce yet but I will do next time I do the shopping!
