It's been weeks now!

Why can't I buy soy sauce? Where has all the soy sauce gone? Who hoards it?

I got a massive bottle yesterday as did my shop with a local wholesaler that normally supplies the hotel trade. They've opened to the general public and its great but I'm spending a fortune as you have to buy huge quantities of everything. But tge normal shops haven't had soy sauce in for about 2 months. No shortage of Frosties or chickpeas here though. Strange how its varying in different places.

Baaaahhhhh · 19/06/2020 13:14

Yes, to the Soy Sauce. No Amoy for ages. Had to buy the expensive one, and wanted the dark heavy one, and can't get any of that at all.

However, I DID manage to get some flour this week from Ocado. Haven't had any from Waitrose for 2 months! Had to thicken a sauce with processed oats the other day..... was interesting....... it worked, but was a bit "crunchy"!

It ran away with the disposable breast pads!

Bran flakes also disappeared for about a month but have reappeared again

GameSetMatch · 19/06/2020 13:46

It takes three months for the soy beans to ferment so there’s bound to be a big gap from using all their stocks when people panic bought huge quantities to the usual level.

But who was panic buying soy sauce?!

Condensed milk, baking powder and mushy peas here. Noticed alot of unusual brands too....

Gin4thewin · 19/06/2020 14:11

I luckily had a bottle of dark and light soy already but can i get bean sprouts? Chow mein sauce? Prawn crackers? Noooope. We make chinese once a week and seems like everyone else is suddenly too!

mbosnz · 19/06/2020 14:14

Definitely track down your local Asian supermarket!

Namechangex10000 · 19/06/2020 14:17

I’ve noticed a shortage of soy sauce too 🤣 thought it was very odd!!!! I noticed in one of our big Tesco stores they had lee kum kee soy sauce in the world foods section (which tends to be the brand used in takeaways and is much much better!!)

mbosnz · 19/06/2020 14:21

We have to buy gluten free soy sauce, and we do a lot of Asian cooking - if we run out, we're in a serious pickle!

flamingochill · 19/06/2020 14:26

Lots of soy here but the advice to use an Asian supermarket is good. My local one does click and collect or delivery.

maddy68 · 19/06/2020 14:27

We go though loads. Never been a shortage on our Aldi ?

APurpleSquirrel · 19/06/2020 14:30

No shortage of Soy Sauce here - but big bottles from an Asian Supermarket, but can't get speciality sugars. Light & Dark Brown sugars appeared last week in Sainsbury's & Asda after months of nothing but Caster, none in Waitrose, Aldi or Home Bargains & nowhere has any Muscavado Sugar - can you tell we're doing A LOT of baking!

WhatHaveIFound · 19/06/2020 14:32

I got both light & dark soy sauce on my last Tesco order but can't get sushi rice or chickpeas at the moment.

Ohdeariedear · 19/06/2020 14:33

I’ve noticed a few odd gaps in the shelves - for a while here there was just no galaxy chocolate of any form or own brand coco pops (there were Kelloggs’ though). This week there is no icing sugar and in Aldi there has been no choc-chip brioche loaf (plenty of plain) since lockdown started. This fascinates me!

DearTeddyRobinson · 19/06/2020 14:47

Ah it will be with the Marigolds and the Sainsbury's own brand chocolate cereal

But why??? Why are these random things out of stock? I've checked a couple of supermarkets for Marigolds to no avail. Bizarre.

summerfish · 19/06/2020 14:54

Also hobnob biscuits or supermarket own brand equivalent!

Months it's been since I've had a chocolate hobnob!

Whywhywhy? I'm not desperate for the hobnob so much as an understanding of the supply chain that means I can get most things I need but not hobnobs or soy sauce.

I think it is regional though.

I can't get any frickin' Five Spice Shock

Or yeast.

TheDogsMother · 19/06/2020 15:02

I got soy sauce and tinned sweetcorn from Waitrose but no chickpeas. Can't get any icing sugar either and flour was twice the usual price from a local deli. DP has suddenly decided to become a lockdown baker having never previously shown the slightest interest. Due to shortages each of his creations cost five x price of buying the finished article in a shop Confused

Roselilly36 · 19/06/2020 15:06

Yes, we have been trying to order some too, and Worcester sauce is impossible to buy also.

passthemustard · 19/06/2020 15:06

Yeast!!

It seems Sainsbury's have deleted it from the website and are now denying that it ever existed!

Got soy sauce though .....

omg35 · 19/06/2020 15:09

I got some in the Asian section of the supermarket recently. It wasn't where it normally is

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 19/06/2020 15:13

eventually found own brand Worcester sauce in Tescos yesterday, but no soy sauce - the shelf label said more stock expected next week (22nd I think). Morrisons hasn't had Birds Eye frozen peas for weeks now. Supply chains are weird things.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 19/06/2020 15:13

Agree that Chinese things are up & down at the moment (five spice powder & sauces). Fresh beansprouts & prawn crackers have been OK, but now my tofu's gone.

I'm now signed up with 4 different supermarkets & it's odd that they vary so much, e.g. only one has Marmite crisps (I thought they'd gone forever). One had no eggs at all this week but another one showed all types available & delivered some.

I think I have some elusive baking powder being delivered tonight - that's been showing OOS everywhere or going unavailable when ordered, for weeks. I even got some yeast a few weeks ago.
