NothingIsWrong · 19/06/2020 08:52

@LivinLaVidaLoki I'm so sorry for your loss. 70 is no age.

@Nihiloxica it's always seriously impressive when the turn out alarm goes and you get to see how quickly they can mobilise. Last time I was on one of the whole time stations (where the firefighters are there ready to go immediately), they had one appliance away in under a minute from the alarm. When they are a retained station (no one on site, all on bleepers), I've seen them get out in just over 5 minutes, and that's with all of them peeling in on bikes and at a flat run.

SockYarn · 19/06/2020 08:54

Oh dear I got drawn in to another "do you wipe your groceries" thread.

Why can't people understand risk? Half the people who have covid are in care homes therefore nowhere near your supermarket. Out of the other people who have it, most know, and are again nowhere near your supermarket. Out of the small number who are left, one would have to choose the same packet out of the same product range in the same supermarket as you, smear their disease-ridden hands all over it, then you pick it up and they KILL YOU. Really, what are the chances?

@Jourdain11 how are you feeling this morning?

@LivinLaVidaLoki So sorry for your loss, life is really unfair.

YY to the sub section of superior judgey MNers - when I joined MN about 1000 years ago breastfeeding threads seemed to be Fight Club and in recent years it's been Feeding DC. Too much. Too little. Just wrong. Obviously at the moment it's HEing everyone else is doing wrong. Sorry, I mean mothers are doing it wrong. I'm sure it was MN that taught me the word "smunt" - portmanteau of smug and cunt Grin (is portmanteau the correct word and do I sound like a knob for using it whether it is or not Grin)

I do wonder how many people they genuinely upset and drive away from MN - I can imagine if I was a new parent reading some of the threads at the moment I would be sobbing in my wardrobe.

I think anyway today I will be mainly sobbing in my wardrobe anyway

How quickly do you think I would Sadly Die if I went to Costco? I'm figuring that the huge aisles will allow me to safely shield from other people, and even if they don't DANISH PASTRIES AND COOKIES.

BakewellTarts · 19/06/2020 09:00

I am puzzled by the shopping wipers but was even when infection rates were higher. I have come to the conclusion that it's something that they can do to make them feel safer even if it has little / no effect. So a little bit of control reasserted. So when anyone in real life talks to me about it I nod along and say nothing (fortunately only had one actual conversation about it outside of the internet).

Right on a non essential shopping spree to that bastion of the middle class John Lewis.

Drivingdownthe101 · 19/06/2020 09:07

The shopping wiping really baffled me too, but I suppose if you’re vulnerable or shielding it could be a reasonable thing to do.
On a similar note, I really think risk assessment needs to be taught in schools.
On another thread someone is getting crucified for saying that a man who has only been out for walks/runs in the past 13 weeks probably doesn’t have coronavirus, seeing as around 0.6% of the population currently have it. BUT ANOTHER RUNNER MAY HAVE BREATHED ON HIM!!!!

LivinLaVidaLoki · 19/06/2020 09:07

Thank you for your kind words everyone.

On a slight tangent, not sure if I am reading this right but the ONS data is out and it looks as if it has gone from 53000 cases in the community to 33,000

"An estimated average of 33,000 people (95% confidence interval: 12,000 to 74,000) within the community in England had COVID-19 between 31 May and 13 June 2020, a clear decrease from the average of 149,000 people infected (95% confidence interval: 75,000 to 264,000) between 3 May and 16 May"

That's 0.058% of the population of England (I think this study only covers England"

Ooh exciting stuff, Welsh anti dementors! You may be able to widen your murdering sprees!

Ibake · 19/06/2020 09:12

Morning all. @livinlavidaloki sorry for your loss, as you say, life very unfair sometimes x

@bubble thank you, thank you for smunt! You might also like Cauc. One of my favourite books is 'Any Human Heart' and in it he describes someone as a grade A Cauc - complete and utter cunt!

Re Costco, had to go a couple of weeks ago when there really was very little else allowed. Needed dog food. 30 min queue but once I was in there it was a joy. Stayed over 2 hours just mooching up and down every single aisle just because I could.

NannyPhlegm · 19/06/2020 09:13

Driving the Welsh government tweeted as much this morning, with the date of 6th July. Of course, with the caveat that they have "enough headroom".
That phrase is a favourite of Drakeford's and I literally cannot hear it now without getting wound up

I'm so very sorry for your loss Loki

TeacupDrama · 19/06/2020 09:15

@Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow another anti dementor from Scotland north of Glasgow near the killing Fields of Loch Lomond, they're just a bit more than 5 miles though. Queen of Safe saint Nicola does my head in too

Mrsfrumble · 19/06/2020 09:21

Argh, got sucked in on the masks on buses thread. I should have known that Covid should be a valid excuse to exclude people with disabilities from public transport Hmm

NannyPhlegm · 19/06/2020 09:21

On a similar note, I really think risk assessment needs to be taught in schools.

Pre lockdown my older child's secondary school did just this, mostly to calm down the children. As part of their Maths lesson, they took the infection figures published and death rates in their age group and calculated their personal risk. Good thing, you might think? Well, two Dementor parents went absolutely ape-shit over this; made some dodgy comments on our WhatsApp group and then had a massive meltdown when the majority didn't agree.
They then went for the teacher, trying to get him to recant, which he refused to do.

It was unnerving to watch the whole thing play out.

countrygirl99 · 19/06/2020 09:24

Amount is a great word. I'm sure I'll find occasion to use it, if not here on the horsey Facebook page which can be just as bad.

SockYarn · 19/06/2020 09:24

@TeacupDrama we're north of Glasgow too.

Off for a killing spree in Milngavie waitrose later.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 19/06/2020 09:24

bubbles Costco bakery should be open. Neighbour went to the Edinburgh branch a few weeks as she NEEDED to shop. Returned resplendent with bales of towels, table lamps and a giant box of croissants - just the essentials really.

DesmondTheMoonbear · 19/06/2020 09:27

Off for a killing spree in Milngavie waitrose later.

That's where I'm going later today. Let's have a competition and see who can bump off the most people.

I'm also going to Aldi and Home Bargains for maximum carnage.

PickAChew · 19/06/2020 09:29

@professorradcliffeemerson I have a few recipes and they all have an ingredient that I can't find anywhere, at the moment.

Wow, that's amazing.

In our town they are a volunteer service, so I guess not there all the time. They all have other jobs, so you'd know them from that.

It's pretty amazing, really, what people are prepared to give for things that matter.

torydeathdrug · 19/06/2020 09:30

@LivinLaVidaLoki that’s really sad, I’m very sorry.

We have a weekly family zoom thing. It’s become more torturous as the weeks have ticked by, I actually dread it now. Zoom is incredibly annoying anyway and the children always get upset because no one listens to them. An hour of silver linings/be safe requires alcohol which leads to arguments & hangovers. Not good.

I predict as “lockdown eases” [another 🤬phrase] ... the rest of my family will be able to get back to pretty much normal - no school aged children - the stuff they do in normal life is already back. So 3 months of furlough then all okay. We’ve worked with 3 school aged kids & all the worry about dd1 & work/university. The stuff that it important to us - school provision, playgrounds, swimming, libraries, the children’s activities, being able to leave the house without being treated like vermin - won’t be back in a time frame that will save us. Our difficulties will continue and I’ll put money on having to listen to well it was tough but a worthwhile sacrifice/opportunity for self expression being adopted as a mantra while we’ll still be in the shit.

Gah to more rain - dd was going to meet friends for a roller skating death rampage but they are too wussy to do it in drizzle Wink

KaronAVyrus · 19/06/2020 09:30

Popping to B and Q later today so will probably take a couple of grannies out whilst I’m there.

countrygirl99 · 19/06/2020 09:30

Amount should be smuggled t of course, must learn to read back and check for random auto corrects. My favourite was cabernet sauvignon changed to cybernet Saudi gnome

SockYarn · 19/06/2020 09:30

@DesmondTheMoonbear and @TeacupDrama we'll all meet in the cafe for some cake!

Oh wait...

Morning all.

So sad to hear about your loss Loki Flowers

Hope your feeling better Jourdain and will be home soon.

Big news from trapped Towers....we've got a plumber coming today...IN THE HOUSE. Me and OH are debating whether or not to bake a cake to celebrate having a "guest"...we thought putting a banner out saying "welcome" might be a bit much.

fartingsparkles · 19/06/2020 09:31

Hello @Calledyou 🙂 you're very welcome here.

@Livin that's so sad about your aunt. I'm so sorry.

How about 'caup' (the version I heard) complete and utter prick (prat in polite company!)
