Barn owls

It has never occurred to me before just how creepy barn owl faces are.

Google it.

The big black eyes; it's like staring into an abyss. I can't tear myself away.

Are they creepy or have I been slipped some drugs?

You’ve been slipped some drugs! Barn owls are nice!

sparklefarts · 16/06/2020 21:35

Nope. Sorry.

I thought I liked owls.

Have you heard the noise they make? Back in the day ppl thought they were harbingers of death....

fairydustandpixies · 16/06/2020 21:48

I nearly drove my car off a cliff one night when a barn owl swooped in front of my windscreen! Was terrifying!

But I still like them. Perhaps because I didn't die!

sparklefarts · 16/06/2020 21:50

Nope no idea off the noise. Definitely going to google that now!

You're welcome :o

StealthPolarBear · 16/06/2020 21:58

Sorry its an Eagle not an owl. I'm an idiot.

sparklefarts · 16/06/2020 22:02

Either way it's creepy.

I don't even know how I ended up here googling big birds.

DH was up for some adult time. No no I said, far too tired. And now I'm in bed alone googling creepy birds? I made the wrong call there

They are exquisitely beautiful. If you ever get a chance to see one up close, they are like a little doll-bird and their feathers are so soft (which is how they fly silently).

Their other name is Screech Owl. Tawny Owls are the ones who go Kee-wick and Hooooo (it's a call and response between a make and female).

DP used to get scared by them frequently when stargazing in his home village, as they appeared just above his face out of nowhere - he loves them, too.

Whitelisbon · 16/06/2020 22:12

They're amazing birds, we have a nesting pair in the church and i see them regularly - one flew past not 5 minutes ago!
Absolutely gorgeous, and totally silent in flight, they just appear out of the darkness.

sparklefarts · 16/06/2020 22:18

This appearing out of nowhere/out of the darkness malarkey is not helping change my mind

OP posts:
MitziK · 16/06/2020 22:33

You aren't a mouse or a shrew. There's nothing to be scared of.

sparklefarts · 16/06/2020 22:55

I'm not scared. I don't think I'm about to get attacked by an owl, obviously.

But they ARE creepy

I'm sorry that the perfection in their form is lost on you.

They are exquisite. Even if their children aren't exactly lookers.

OK spooky barn owl story!!
We were staying with my parents in law in their very old creaky cottage in a little rural hamlet in France. Our boys were 4 and 2 at the time. I had put them to bed earlier and gone back downstairs to have a few glasses of vin with everyone. Later on I popped back up to check on them and not wanting to disturb them (as was very much enjoying myself!) did not switch the lights on. (What was I thinking??) I popped my head into my older boy's room and heard this awful breathing/ hissing noise coming from the top corner of the room. I was frozen to the spot! I was thinking crikey I now know for sure that ghosts actually exist - never heard anything like it!! I dashed downstairs (as quietly as poss on creaky wooden stairs) and told my husband and in-laws that there was a ghost in my sons room Blush Once they had stopped laughing they told me about the barn owls nesting in the roof and how the chicks make a sort of hissing noise.
It was very spooky! glad it turned out to be owls though!! Grin

I've been following a lady on facebook who is hand raising a barn owl. Amazing transformation. And lovely bird.

Never sleeping again. Thanks
TheTroutofNoCraic · 16/06/2020 23:36

Up until the days got longer, I used to see a barn owl at approx 6am and 9pm, swooping about for mice in the field behind my house. I miss that wee weird face.

mamasiz · 16/06/2020 23:41

I’ll never forget the day one flew out of a barn towards me and my dad whilst. We were out walking. I must have been 7/8 at the time. Never forgotten it. They are a bit creepy looking but absolutely magical.

mineofuselessinformation · 16/06/2020 23:47

They are beautiful creatures. Count yourself lucky if you see one.
They will do you no harm!

Gingaaarghpussy · 16/06/2020 23:48

I had a race with a barn owl once.
There I was minding my own business on my 50cc moped, going home and this barn owl decided to float along beside me. They won.
I've also watched a barn owl hunt for its breakfast.
All owls are awesome.

I live in a town and for the last 10 years I have heard a pair of tawny owls calling.
