Exciting topic - What’s on your kitchen worktop?

U shaped kitchen, i have a bread bin, toaster, ikea lamp, kettle, little egg store, salt/pepper stand, kitchen roll, microwave.

I have the space so its not cluttered.

But i have a friend who leaves the kettle out and thats it. Its a brand new (all be it white/grey/gloss and not my cup of tea) with built in microwave, but she keeps her toaster in the cupboard. Nothing is out!

I just find it bizzare.

Are you my mums friend lol?

She has a kettle out. That's it.

Usually I have a kettle out and a microwave down the kitchen end. The other end i have a smaller worktop which has my lap top on at the minute as I'm waiting for a desk for my spare room.

I like the uncluttered look also. We are in the middle of removing walls and windows in our kitchen so it's a bit cluttered with plasterboard etc. The new exterior doors don't arrive until early July and I'm just going to have to put up with it.

nancybotwinbloom · 16/06/2020 08:30

I hate the toaster to be fair. You only have to look at it and there are crumbs. It's a prick.

Lyricallie · 16/06/2020 08:32

I like the uncluttered look and if I had space I would have it like your friends. But alas. Instead I have my coffee maker, spice rack, utensil pot, scales toaster, kettle, microwave and a basket with all my cookery books in it. Oh and a teeny George foreman.

Just now it’s probably covered in stuff but it SHOULD have:

Nespresso machine
My index chopping boards
And my kitchenaid.

That’s it. I got a tap put in instead of a kettle, integrated microwave, toaster lives in a drawer. Ideally I’d have nothing but I worry about the weight of the kitchenaid in a drawer and the other two are soooo handy there.

Atalune · 16/06/2020 08:36

Tray witH kettle and tea things
Tray with coffee machine
Enamel jug with cooking utensils
Trivet with tray and salts, seasonings, oils etc for cooking
Huge wooden board
Bread bin
Microwave and toaster

We have quite a big kitchen and an island so it sounds cluttered but it isn’t. Island is bare apart from bowl of fruit.

bronzedgodesswannabe · 16/06/2020 08:38

My dream is to have a kitchen with nothing on the sides apart from some perfectly placed flowers
I want a boiling tap aswell so wouldn't even have a kettle out

But alas, my kitchen is fairly cluttered with cooking utensils and all the usual crap
I hate it

Sunnysidegold · 16/06/2020 08:38

All manner of crap!

I tidy it and then one side gets used as a dumping ground. When it's clear it still has a lot of stuff out on it.
Bread bin, knife block, fruit stand, Alexa, napkin holder, handsoap, trivet next to cooker for kettle, Utensil pot, candle on the windowsill....and that's it tidy.

Microwave and coffe maker are in the utility room.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 16/06/2020 08:39

Toaster, kettle, coffee maker, kitchenaid (okay, that’s dd’s - but it looks good), fruit bowl(s), fruit which doesn’t fit into the bowl, random copy of Ballet Shoes (book not footwear), one of the dc’s laptops (don’t know which of my dc it belongs too), piles of academic articles, one pair of dirty socks (why?), tangled collection of chargers, a laminator, some pens....

I like the uncluttered look.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 16/06/2020 08:49

Bugger.. that’s belongs to, not too.

Sheepareawesome · 16/06/2020 08:54

Everything. Absolutely everything. It should just have toaster m, kettle, coffee machine, fruit bowl and microwave. It also has everything from bank statements from last year, cat brush, hair bands, paint brushes, paint pots, screwdrivers, sweets, plant pots, beer, a radio, crisps, a clock, glue, multiple nail files, a bag of sugar. And that's just what's on the top layer.... Luckily we have a large galley kitchen so still have plenty of space too.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 16/06/2020 08:56

U shaped kitchen with full height larder on 3rd wall.
Kettle, little tray with tea coffee filter papers sugar, coffee filter machine.
Dish and hand soap pumps by sink.
Little tray with oil salt pepper by hob.
Facebook Portal
Fruit bowl and wooden chopping board on island.

And a pencil.
There's always a bloody pencil. Don't know where it comes from

pinkazing · 16/06/2020 08:56

Air fryer, kettle, toaster and microwave out everything else out of sight. But I’m now thinking I might hide the toaster too.

Hibbetyhob · 16/06/2020 09:00

Haha I might be your friend because I have nothing but the kettle out. Toaster lives in a cupboard. Microwave & coffee machine on special shelf in utility. We have beautiful quartz worktops and I love being able to see them. We do also have a funky plant & fresh flowers always.

When we had a smaller kitchen there was more stuff out just because we didn’t have cupboard space. But I love the uncluttered look. No clutter in the first place means other stuff doesn’t accumulate.

Dollywilde · 16/06/2020 09:00

I love the uncluttered look. DH... doesn’t.

We have:

Draining stacker thing on the sink draining board
Kettle
Chopping board and trays up against the wall (L-shaped kitchen units)
Knife block
Bottle steriliser
George Foreman grill
Spice rack
Salt and pepper grinders
Utensil pot (an old wine cooler)
Rack thing for putting hot pots/baking trays on
Toaster

Dollywilde · 16/06/2020 09:01

We don’t have a microwave, mostly because in our old flat we just used it for storage and I put my foot down when we moved here and said I wasn’t having something that big on my worktop unless we were using it daily.

Redcrayons · 16/06/2020 09:05

Toaster
Kettle
Microwave
Fruit bowl
Shelf thingie for phone charging.
pile of random crap I haven’t put away

When I first had the kitchen done, I kept the toaster in a cupboard but it spent so long ‘waiting to be cleaned and put away’ it started to permanently live on the worktop.

The microwave is too heavy to be lifting in and out of the cupboard all the time.

CMMum88 · 16/06/2020 09:20

Mine has a microwave, a kettle with tea and coffee things on a tray and a tray with oil and salt and pepper , a knife block.

Franticbutterfly · 16/06/2020 09:21

We have a lot of worktop (about 8m) but I don't keep much on it. We have a microwave hidden in the corner, a sonos player, a bread bin, sometimes a butter dish, a banana hanger and a fruit bowl, kitchen roll stand, 2 utensil pots either side of the cooker, 2 tea containers and a sugar pot, a kettle, nespresso machine and a Kitchenaid. Also we have a massive bag of iams where we feed the animals atm as it's too big to fit in the cupboard. When my DH sees minimalist kitchens on tv, he always comments "oh look, it looks like no one lives there, your dream kitchen", I think there is a balance to be struck between homely and cluttered.

TheDogsMother · 16/06/2020 09:26

I'm like your friend Smile. On the island there are flowers at one end and a metallic tray of fruit at the other. There's also a peninsula which has a little group of cacti at the far end. Kettle, toaster, chopping board stand, knives etc in utility room. I love it being virtually empty.

Meruem · 16/06/2020 09:28

I’m not a fan of kitchens with bare sides. I can see the appeal in that they’re easy to clean, but it just feels so cold and clinical. Likewise I am not a fan of living rooms that just contain a sofa and a tv on the wall. My friends house is like that and being there actually depresses me and I feel so happy when I come home! My kitchen sides are neat, everything has its use and it’s place. But I do have a lot out, the usual kettle etc, recipe books, a lovely cooking pot which I like to display. When I sit in there drinking a coffee it feels nice and homely. I personally wouldn’t enjoy sitting in a kitchen that had nothing in it to give it personality.

averythinline · 16/06/2020 09:29

Chopping boards in container.., microwave toaster, garlic store, Salt n pepper, utensils, slow cooker, espresso machine, kettle, knife block , kitchen towel on stand, biscuit barrel.
The slow cooker usually lives in cupboard in summer but used it the other day....
I can't be bothered to get everything out everytime I cook and most things are used each day....

(Plus tonnes of crap dumped on the end by DH/DC chargers etc)

rosegoldwatcher · 16/06/2020 09:30

On a good (tidy) day - two bottles of fruit squash, the kettle, wooden bread bin with the toaster and its tray on top, Tassimo, utensil pot, knife block, microwave. The bread machine comes out to play frequently.

(Today is NOT a good day! All manner of extra clutter waiting to be housed in base cupboards.)

ginsparkles · 16/06/2020 09:41

Very little. Kettle, teapot and a cookbook stand. On the other side next to the hob is a knife block and chopping boards. My toaster is in the utility room and we don't have a microwave.

We have just taken down the wall and built a new breakfast bar where the worktop was so it has been planned to have nothing much on it.

HelloMissus · 16/06/2020 09:45

On the one by the sink there’s nothing (no kettle - boiling tap).
On the one by the cupboards there’s an IPod dock, a coffee machine, a toaster.
On the island there’s a fruit bowl. A candle and a pop up charger.

ExpletiveDelighted · 16/06/2020 09:45

I'm not a fan of bare counters, it makes it look like a showroom kitchen to me, I prefer a more lived in look. We have got microwave, toaster, kettle, instant pot, coffee grinder and fruit bowl out, also salt and pepper, a celery pot, an egg holder, butter dish, a pen pot and a dish for random coins, lego pieces or whatever. We haven't got room for all these in cupboards but even if we did I'd keep most of them out.
