Fingers crossed it's nipped in the bud but does show how difficult it is to keep anywhere free of this disease. If a small country that has pretty much shut itself off from the rest of the world can't stop Covid, what does that tell us?

There is really no point in having quarantine at all unless you do it properly

notimagain · 17/06/2020 08:13

this incident is why I am glad that the UK government has so far resisted the airline lobby's attempts to change the new quarantine arrangements here.

I guess the idea the UK now has quarantine arrangements might make people feel better but they are full of holes.

If the UK's arrangements were as tight as NZ's are meant to be there might be some justification for them being in place and the airlines suffering continuing pain.

mbosnz · 17/06/2020 08:37

Well, thank goodness NZ has track and trace well established aye?

Just like the UK, of course. . . oh. Wait. . .

Consarn these uppity Colonials! Grin

Many people in the UK haven't been affected, including I suspect many of those who think they have been

But there are also many who have had a positive antibody test without having knowingly had it.

KenDodd · 17/06/2020 09:43

Last I heard about 7% of the UK population has had covid and should therefore be immune, however it's uncertain how long immunity might last.

Just listening to More or Less on radio 4. They thought it would make sense to quarantine people BEFORE they left the UK as they are more likely to be infected than new arrivals.

I stand by what I said earlier Boris and co have delivered us the worse of both worlds, massive death rate AND massive economic damage.

KenDodd · 22/06/2020 09:55

New Zealand now have nine cases.
If I was JA I would be so pissed off about those two women let out of quarantine. I'm pissed off with the women as well, dying relatives or not, their top priority should have been to protect public health, they knew they might have been infected but stopped at motorway services. This is the same reason I was so angry with Dominic Cummings, it wasn't breaking the law or rules, it was travelling the length of the country with covid. He should have shown some care for the public and not moved from his house.

Really, really hoping JA can contain it and praying for a vaccine soon.

In good news.
26 countries and territories have now eradicated covid. Hope they keep it that way with good quarantine measures.

LarkDescending · 22/06/2020 10:09

Is it known whether the 2 women infected anyone though, @KenDodd? I thought most or all of the new cases were returning New Zealanders being tested and quarantined.

KenDodd · 22/06/2020 12:15

Ok, that's great news. I hoped they'd just be in airport quarantine.
Still stands what I say about the other two though. The world would be in a much better place if anyone who even suspected they might have covid stayed put.

After 100 days free of infection we had some community flare ups and a lot of contact tracing but it looks like NZ might be covid-free again - except for new arrivals in managed isolation of course and they are stuck there for 14 days and two negative covid tests.
