What do you think about this rug?

I've name changed for this because I've spoken to people about this IRL...

I'm looking for a rug to go in a dark snug - walls are painted Hague blue, there is an oak parquet floor and the furniture has mid century vibes. The sofa is (or will be, once I get the new covers) olive green velvet. I love this room and how dark and cosy and cosseting it is but I'm thinking a really colourful rug might make it even better.

I kind of really love this one but I'm worried it looks a bit garish and cheap...

Any thoughts?

I like it. Preferred the 2nd one but yes show us how it looks.

Someone mentioned lampshades.. something like this. I have an ikea one and love it, but other shops have them. The ikea one also comes in midnight blue.

I like the rug but think the pattern is too loud for the room. The room looks chilled and sophisticated, but the rug would change that vibe. I think you would be better with a Persian-style rug with a pile rather than this flatweave type one.

Oops I missed your comment to say you bought it! Ignore me!

I think the colourful rug will be a great contrast to the dark walls - though I do have crazy taste :)

Can't wait to see it in situ!

Nixee2231 · 16/06/2020 09:01

The first one has too many colours for my taste but it's not my house, it's your house. Get the one you love and that will make you smile when you walk into the room. That's all that matters.

Nixee2231 · 16/06/2020 09:03

Sorry I failed at reading the whole thread! I'm so happy you went with your gut, cant wait to see your crazy rug in action!

ComeBy · 16/06/2020 09:06

Hope you enjoy your rug, but bye bye mid century vibe!

RuginaSnug · 16/06/2020 09:30

I dreamt, feverishly, about The Rug all last night (as well as Vernon Kay and Tess Daly doing a bank robbery, bizarrely) and woke up with a kind of 'I bought a questionable rug at 1 in the morning' hangover...

But you're right, @Hellbentwellwent - I'd always wonder if it was The One That Passed Me By if I didn't go for it.

I guess we'll see! I'll be back with pics when it gets here...

Wow... Cross-posted with loads more opinions!

I agree it's risky, and it might look cheap and tacky. In which case, DD will indeed have a new rug (and she'll love it... She's all about the cheap and tacky vibes Grin). And then I'll chalk it up to experience (and vow to never panic buy rugs in the middle of the night) and buy the other one instead.

Re - the room. Glad so many of you like it! It's finally coming together after months of being a bit of a dumping ground. We got the desk and mid-century corner unit last week and it's really beginning to take shape. Totally agree about it needing more though - we've still got lots of pictures to put up (another 'debate' with DP - he wants one picture, I want 500) and the lampshade is just an old ikea one from our old house that is just a temporary measure.

And yes to standard lamp(s) - currently watching loads in ebay atm!

Thanks all Smile

Fuck! Just received this message from the bloody ebay seller. Really gutted. Sad

Oh well... Obviously wasn't meant to be.

I really don't like it. For any room. It'd set off my vertigo.

RuginaSnug · 16/06/2020 13:22

Thanks @Bluesheep8... But no need to worry - I bought it but then thefucking ebay sellers told me they didn't actually have it in stock. So I can't have it anyway.

It's been a roller-coaster.

There are some fab rugs on the Wayfair site

picklemewalnuts · 16/06/2020 14:41

The pictures you link show the rugs in good lighting. In a darker room, they won't look as vibrant, so go bold as you like!

Do you like the alternative they offered? I like the left one!

hellsbellsmelons · 16/06/2020 15:10

Oh no OP.
Can't believe they are out of stock.
Although I do quite like the stripey one and it might help the room look wider?????

jamandtonic · 16/06/2020 15:14

Honestly, I'd go for one with a more dusky pink and olive vibe.

RuginaSnug · 16/06/2020 15:16

@picklemewalnuts - that was my thinking. I thought both would tone each other down (so the darkness of the walls would bring the brightness of the rug down and the rug would stop the room looking quite so dark).

I don't like the others unfortunately. I'm quite taken with that aztec-ish pattern.

OP posts:
RuginaSnug · 16/06/2020 15:18

@jamandtonic - sounds nice but I can't really find one. Especially when I seem to be a bit obsessed with that kind of pattern. Although I'm sure I could cope if it wasn't aztec vibes if the right one turned up.

Budget is an issue too, annoyingly

How about something like this? Similar but slightly more muted colours?

Have a wee look on Groupon. Fab, colourful rugs.

TerrorWig · 16/06/2020 15:44

I like it.

But I have two questions:

A) what is Hague blue?
B) are you getting the olive green sofas from Made?

Coz I’m going for a similar mid century vibe in my living room and am wavering between blue and green sofas!

TerrorWig · 16/06/2020 15:46

Also try La Redoute for rugs - surprisingly got some really nice furniture from them, decent prices too.

RuginaSnug · 16/06/2020 16:18

@TerrorWig - thanks. I love La Redoute (our dining table is from them. Bought in their excellent Black Friday sale) but their rugs are prob a bit pricey for us. I don't really want to spend more than £100, might stretch to £150 if it's perfect.

Hague Blue is a Farrow and Ball paint colour. Deep, beautiful blue. I read something the other day that said it was the most searched for paint colour! I wish I was getting a new sofa from Made (we've got a dark blue velvet one from them in our main room and it's LUSH)... I'm just getting some covers made by an etsy seller for our old ikea Karlstad sofa Grin.

@peachypetite - that one might work! I'll have a think.

Defo need to spend a good few hours doing some serious internet browsing
