Please tell me how you feel about dolphins & sea-life

I'm doing some creative writing about sea-life and I would appreciate hearing about the emotional responses the different creatures evoke from you.

e.g. dolphin, orca, whale, shark, sawfish, seahorse, crab, sea-otter, octopus, eel, starfish, ray

Curiosity.

There is still much to learn about the lives, migratory patterns, complex social & communication behaviour, feeding habits and reproductive behaviour of cetaceans. We know even less about many species of shark, rays and other cartilaginous fish.

littlealexhome remember the penguin in Wallace and Gromit? They’re dodgy fuckers.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh · 17/06/2020 01:14

Ooh, frogs!

I love frogs. I rescued one in my garden and it peed on me. I respect that. I also like their eyes and the way some species stuff their food into their mouths with their little hands. And the way the bright green ones you see in zoos can stick themselves to glass and go to sleep.

ThighThighofthigh I find it upsetting that people ruin good mayonnaise with prawns.

Thaddit Penguins are dodgy little bastards. They steal stones from other penguins' nests. I live with a penguin who's constantly trying to get my bank details and it's exhausting, frankly.

Whale sharks are utterly amazing to swim with, they are so huge but so silent and very curious of us humans. The first time I swam with them I actually cried into my mask..

EwwSprouts · 17/06/2020 10:33

Sea otters are top of the cute stakes. Eels bottom, far too closely related to snakes.

I was ambivalent about crabs until I saw those monsters than can straddle a small car. Then it all became a bit 60's horror movie.

Seal pretending to be a labrador is just adorable.

Sealions remind me of teenage boys. All that size but not quite coordinated on land. Posturing & play fighting for position.

In defence of rays, Steve Irwin did a Big Daddy on to it. Rays are so graceful.

If you want to talk rapey behaviours then mallards are only fit for pancakes & hoisin sauce.

EBearhug · 17/06/2020 10:48

Oh yes, mallards are bad.

I have a friend who works for a marine conservation centre, and she's in agreement with the dolphins are vicious rapey bastards view.

Sharks - very much depends on which type. I have always had a soft spot for dogfish, probably because they were one of the first seafish I could recognise. Also they are a reasonable size.

I have definitely had an emotional reaction to eels - I was playing in the stream near home in the summer hols, and one was by the brambles at the bank, which I hadn't realised. I think we both experienced shock.
@jamandtonic Grin it is a constant problem, but on the other hand, could an octopus do a worse job than Donald Trump?
I literally can't think of anything that could do a worse job than Donald Trump.

@tilder

I was given a dried seahorses too HotMessTryNotToStress. Horrible. Glad I'm not the only one who buried it in the garden!

Can tell whose kids watched Octonauts on here as well!

@tilder - Just seen your message. I've never heard of anybody else doing the same thing!
Doingtheboxerbeat · 20/06/2020 10:40

NADALT - Not all dolphins are like that.

TSSDNCOP · 20/06/2020 17:48

It is a bar that is lower than a snakes bollocks to be fair. More power to the octopus!
