I'm doing some creative writing about sea-life and I would appreciate hearing about the emotional responses the different creatures evoke from you.

e.g. dolphin, orca, whale, shark, sawfish, seahorse, crab, sea-otter, octopus, eel, starfish, ray

@Mysterian

Ray flat and friendly. Like a freshly squashed Labrador

Grin your description doesn't exactly inspire me to write a poem about rays right now!

My initial* thoughts:

Dolphins*- Beautiful, intelligent creatures who live in pods, love each other and look after each other, they have advanced communication skills, are able to use reason and solve things, they like to have fun, smile and be happy, they like to be exhibitionists and impress each other and humans, incredible dexterity and acrobatics. They have saved many humans from shark attacks. Capitivity kills their spirit and they have been known to give up, it is hugely cruel.

(* Re: Dolphins - Second thoughts since reading this thread - Please tell me this isn’t true, dolphins are bastard rapists? They kill countless babies and other harmless creatures? Nooooooooo. I can’t believe it. You are basically telling me they are one fin away from being the Ted Bundy’s of the sea. This can’t be happening. I don’t remember David Attenborough saying a single word on this subject).

Orca - Large and powerful, creepy looking creatures but also beautiful at the same time, live in groups, could kill you as soon as look at you if they wanted to. They are intelligent and can use reason and solve things. I’ve seen them (on TV) group together and follow a mother and baby whale (not sure which type) for miles trying to separate them. Then drown the baby and eat just the lower jaw I think it was because it’s a delicacy. To me that’s sinister and downright nasty. Yes I know they are wild creatures but seriously? They also hate being in captivity, it is so cruel and they have been known to plot and kill their handlers by drowning them.

Whale - Large and powerful. Some of them survive on eating plankton, tons of the stuff. Quite incredible creatures.

Sharks - They get a bad press due to Jaws mainly. Great whites and tiger sharks and the like are amazingly effective predators, they will attack, kill and eat each other and most other things that take their fancy. So impressive and they have hardly evolved because they are virtually perfect in design. There are so many other types of sharks that are no threat to humans but they all seem to be lumped together as nasty buggers. Sharks are under threat from humans big time.

Sawfish - Don’t know much about them but they are bound to play an important part in the chain like all other sea creatures.

Sea Horses - Yes, I love them! Always have. So beautiful, majestic and cute. They seem quite calm and laid back. The Dad’s incubate the babies I understand - Brilliant! Make me feel warm and fuzzy.
I was given a dried sea horse when I was little, it was a prized possession of mine, I felt so lucky to have it. That’s until I was a bit older and realised the poor creature had died just so someone could make some money out of it and I could look at it from time to time. I buried it in the garden after that and felt so sad and guilty about it.

Crab - Sharp pincers, excellent armour, good little hunters, often scampering about looking busy. I don’t mind them.

Sea Otter - Ingenious and clever, are intelligent and can solve things. Always thought they looked cute, furry and had their shit together.

Octopus - A bit creepy, imagine they are slimy, intelligent and can solve puzzles, loads of different types, don’t really warm to them.

Eel - Ick! Sorry I don’t like them. They seem slimy, wriggling and writhing around, can’t be doing with them. But it’s not their fault.

Starfish - Nice looking, what’s not to like really, seem quite harmless as far as I know. They have their own niche in the sea world. Yeah I like them.

Ray - Beautiful creatures, but frightening because most seem to be capable of killing you if they feel like it. Manta rays seem to be particularly interesting and majestic when I’ve seen them in big groups on the tv.

I like the fact there is so much mystery surrounding the sea and it’s sea life. So much left to discover. It’s a magical place but also eery at times.

I worry about what is happening to our seas and oceans. Most governments are not doing anywhere near enough to protect them. Humans have caused so much damage it’s awful.

Interesting thread OP, good luck with your creative writing. I expect you’ll have plenty to ponder over on this thread!

Dolphins - meh

Ocras - bastards

whale - big

shark - fascinating

sawfish - don't see the point of them

seahorse I like

crab, I don't like

sea-otter - ambivalent

octopus - my absolute favourite.

eel - hate them

starfish - like them

ray - no opinion.

HotMessTryNotToStress · 16/06/2020 02:15

‘Ocras’ ....... Bloody autocorrect @Cupidity.
I’m really sorry I’m not usually like this. Confused

Please tell me how you feel about dolphins & sea-life
Cupidity · 16/06/2020 02:24

Whoops. Stupid auto correct. Although, actually I'd be tempted to put ocra in the bastard category for vegetables.

Green beans would be friendly, cauliflower = nice but dim, carrots are cheerful, and okra is a bastard that turns into slime when I cook it.

HotMessTryNotToStress · 16/06/2020 02:36

Ocra - Yes I quite agree - Never tried it but does look a bit suspicious. What does it taste like?

Yes to green beans being friendly, cauliflower looks nice enough but just can’t handle the taste, carrots are super heroes - my faves. Let’s not even discuss peas.
Must really go to bed now since derailing this thread.

strugglingwithdeciding · 16/06/2020 02:37

Love dolphins and really want to se one in the wild hate the idea of captivity , we have one visiting locally but I've yet to see it and nature is cruel too at times

Seals ok from distance but wouldn't want to get too close
Orcas again amazing intelligent and would also like to see in wild
Sharks have great respect for them but would be terrified and don't want to see one of these in wild
Seahorses are another one of my favourites
Turtles have seen one wild from a boat and quite elegant in water but I always think of a snapping turtle and they may bite

MaggieMay1972 · 16/06/2020 03:09

Big fan of Cod, especially with chips. Grin

HotMessTryNotToStress · 16/06/2020 03:18

Me too @MaggieMay1972 but don’t get me started on restaurants who only offer fish and chips with peas. Why can’t I have carrots instead? I always ask nicely.

managedmis · 16/06/2020 03:23

Not keen, really

Are you writing any other books? I like tea?

midwestsummer · 16/06/2020 03:54

Sea otters have arm pit pockets that they store extra snacks in.

Genderwitched · 16/06/2020 04:33

I like narwhals, they’re magical.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 16/06/2020 05:02

Never trust the cute ones.

Sting rays, dolphins, otters etc. They're just biding their time to take you out. Then bam, you're sleeping with the fishes. 💁🏻‍♀️

HeronLanyon · 16/06/2020 05:33

dolphin - joy and then schadenfreude as I remember their reality
orca - joy at their beauty then remember that awful baby seal footage.
whale - absolute astonishment that they exist given what we have done to their environment. So sadness.
shark - fear. Basking shark - joy. Hammerhead shark - some laughter
sawfish - amazement
seahorse - astonishment
crab - neutral other than sadness that people eat them
sea-otter - pure and unadulterated joy.
octopus - sadness They bring back strong memories of swimming with my recently late parents on heavenly holidays
eel - fright - recently saw huge eel in underwater cliff (by the abyss of deep ocean) really terrified me. Huge toothy mouth.
starfish - lovely
ray - recently swam close to feeding manta rays - fear mixed with joy at their existence. Exhilarating.

peppapigisscottish · 16/06/2020 05:34

Dolphin tastes nice.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh · 16/06/2020 06:51

@ThighThighofthigh

A dolphin would only do that stuff to lull you into a false sense of security. They'd be in it for the long game. You'd marry them and then BAM! They kill you for the life insurance payout. You didn't even know they'd taken out a policy. But they had. They're sneaky, underhanded fuckers.

Squince · 16/06/2020 07:24

There’s a remarkably sadistic seal who hangs out in our cove. His favourite thing is to suddenly whoosh right up to anyone snorkelling and make aggressive noises in their ear from a distance of about an inch.

Otherwise, I don’t have any stronger feelings about dolphins or orcas than I do about pollock. I’m quite fond of limpets and dog whelks.

ThighThighofthigh · 16/06/2020 08:02

Kit have you considered that the dolphin might just love me for myself? I would call him Dolphy.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh · 16/06/2020 08:14

@ThighThighofthigh Frankly? No. Dolphins don't feel love. They are purely self-interested. Oh, sure - 'Dolphy' will be all smiles and squeaks and snuggles to reel you in but soon enough it'll be demands for dinner (which will never be hot enough or tasty enough or crunchy enough). Then he'll unexpectedly bring you tea in the morning. You'll think he's being sweet and ignore the funny taste - you'll think the milk must be on the turn or that he stirred it with his salty flipper, because there's no way he would have slipped antifreeze or cyanide into it - except that he did and now we're back to the life insurance policy. He's cashed it in and he's rolling in it. All because you thought he cared.

nitgel · 16/06/2020 08:19

Love all sea life and it really upsets me to see what's happening to them re pollution over fishing etc

tilder · 16/06/2020 08:38

I was given a dried seahorses too HotMessTryNotToStress. Horrible. Glad I'm not the only one who buried it in the garden!

Can tell whose kids watched Octonauts on here as well!

DanglyTasselsOfThigh · 16/06/2020 08:59

Kit you have completely put me off Dolphins now. The last thread I read that they were rapey cuntz and I felt borderline meh about that but now you tell me that Dolphy fucker is planning to kill Thigh for the life insurance!! Well, now I call 'Too far!' If it was 'Snog, Marry, Avoid' I'd defo stop at 'Snog' for a dolphin now!

I would however, marry an Octopus, I think they are more stable and reliable as a partner. What you see is what you get, a bit slippery but no death plots, and they could help me to sort out the garden faster with the extra arms. A good all-rounder I think. There's good and bad in everyone, you just need to find a compatible partner who won't kill you and in this case that is an Octopus.

ThighThighofthigh · 16/06/2020 09:10

Dangly I think you're stereotyping octopuses now. I just don't feel their intentions are honourable, not after the documentary 'Octopussy'.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh · 16/06/2020 09:31

@DanglyTasselsOfThigh Dolphy will cry at her funeral and be laughing that creepy chittering laugh on the inside.

@ThighThighofthigh Octopuses are excellent. Very protective of their babies. Very clever. They can unscrew jars, which is often more than I can do. #teamoctopus

RoLaren · 16/06/2020 09:35

I can't say I ever had an emotional response to an eel. Or a crab. Or a whelk. Orca are pretty awe-inspiring though.
