I'm doing some creative writing about sea-life and I would appreciate hearing about the emotional responses the different creatures evoke from you.

e.g. dolphin, orca, whale, shark, sawfish, seahorse, crab, sea-otter, octopus, eel, starfish, ray

Being in the water when these guys swam past was phenomenal, there were a lot more of them but they were so fast it was incredible.

Love orca too, I’ve seen transient ones in the wild when they were in play mode and it was amazing, Think id be a bit nervous being in with them.

Hoping to see great whites in Africa next year if travel is running smoothly

They do not, ever, belong in captivity.

Please tell me how you feel about dolphins & sea-life

Just in relation to whales and dolphins I would recommend watching 'The Cove' and 'Black Fish'... a real eye opener I thought, not sure this is helpful but worth the watch if you want a better understanding of them, although these are mainly in relation to their behaviour and them in captivity

Scruffyoak · 16/06/2020 09:48

I don't like dolphins at all.

Seahorses are cool as are octopuses

Thaddit · 16/06/2020 12:14

Sharkz are great, especially IKEA ones.

Manta Rays are the dogs wotsits as well. They are like St Trinians schoolgirls bouncing around in the sea and having a good time.

Starfish are cute but wet blankets, they don’t do much just sit around thinking they are adorable.

Dolphins are sly and probably all work for Fagin.

Octupi are very single girls friend. Loads of arms to put one and give them a cuddle. They taste good too.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh · 16/06/2020 13:34

IKEA sharks are okay. I'm definitely not just saying that because I have two staring at me from opposite sides of the room.

(help me)

Fishing be my game, if it moves I catches it and eats it. Nothing be like a bowl a Noggie stew.

But no eating bottom feeders, no sirree. They looks like shit, they eats shit and they tastes of shit. I sells those to the Grokels. I collects stuff off the seashore and turns it into crap and sells it to the Grokels. I sees Grokels, I sees pound signs.

ThighThighofthigh · 16/06/2020 16:08

If I clearly understood the parameters of the question I could expand upon my answer.

Do you want to know my emotions regarding axolotls? Strictly speaking an amphibian and a lake dweller. Therefore not sealife per se.

ThighThighofthigh · 16/06/2020 16:09

If I see whores I see fishnets.

Ostanovka · 16/06/2020 16:32

I love swimming in the ocean but wish it wasn't full of slimy swishy animals with teeth and stings.

7ofNine · 16/06/2020 17:09

Octopuses are as clever as (more intelligent) dogs. Please don't eat them @Thaddit Sad
I reckon they could manage sudoku if you taught them to read numbers.

I like axolotls. I have an axolotl needle minder for my embroidery. But they aren't sea life, as you say.

Do you know what I really hate in the sea? Fucking prawns. They're insects and yet people eat them like they're amazing. Lobsters. Pinchy, MASSIVE insects. They're like marine earwigs.

blablabla25 · 16/06/2020 17:27

I love all kinds of sea life! Have swam with dolphins, manta rays rays and sharks in Jamaica under a conservation programme/charity. Amazing!

I've been obsessed with sharks for as long as I can remember, the bigger and scarier the better! I spent many childhood years on the beach in Florida watching bull sharks off the coast and feeding at the end of the pier, I am petrified of open water and I'm sure this is down to my fascination!

littlealexhorne · 16/06/2020 17:45

I love this thread! Both informative and hilarious! I find all sea life super interesting and I really wish I knew more about it all. I also think I'd love to have a friendship with penguin or otter, but I am now worried that somebody will come along to tell me they mug the elderly or something!

Carouselfish · 16/06/2020 18:06

Dolphins - get rid of humans. Replace with dolphins. Much prefer them. Think all the dolphin hate is people who don't like animals displaying Intelligence.

Octopi, feel very sorry for them as they aren't likely to get the same protection regulations applied to them any time soon despite being so clever.

Whales, again, far preferable to humans. Their eyes make me sad; they look so wise and gentle. (Not referring to orcas here).

Mostly I just feel very sorry for sea life. Living in our waste. Captured and put in tiny containers for our stupid amusement.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh · 16/06/2020 18:57

Carouselfish I don't dislike dolphins because they're intelligent. Quite the opposite. I dislike them because they use their intelligence for evil. They'd discover the atom and immediately go for the atom bomb rather than clean energy. They're just like that.

userabcname · 16/06/2020 19:23

I dislike all of them and the sea terrifies me. I intend to live my life as inland as possible. Fish are gross and make me physically feel sick when I see them: I do not understand the appeal of fish tanks at all. Dolphins, sharks and orcas terrify me. Watching Blackfish has made me feel terribly sorry for orcas, though, and I do not agree with any animal being kept in captivity / used for entertainment. Interestingly, Great White Sharks cannot be held in captivity as every time someone tries it, the shark dies. I find the very thought of eels horrifying and I hope never to come across one in real life. Crabs look prehistoric, starfish look horrible with those sucker things, rays are scary and sea otters can look quite cute, I suppose, but only from a picture or very far away; I would not want to get too close. On the whole, the ocean is a vast, watery house of horrors and I try not to think about it too much. I do regularly have nightmares about the sea which probably doesn't help.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh · 16/06/2020 20:00

KatnissK That does make me respect great white sharks more. They value their freedom.

Otherwise, I tend to agree with you about the sea and cannot fathom (pardon the pun) other people's enthusiasm for it. I have a colleague who goes diving in various exotic locations and I just think, 'Why?'. The sea is wet and full of fish.

ThighThighofthigh · 16/06/2020 21:06

I must agree with you Kit regarding prawns. They're disgusting, they're hairy and weird with buggy evil eyes. They have a sack of shit running down their back too. Who wants a pal like that? Not me.

Starfish are arseholes, just saying.

TerrorWig · 16/06/2020 21:15

I’m fascinated by the sea and particularly the deeps but have no strong feelings for individual species.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh · 16/06/2020 22:05

ThighThighofthigh I actually find prawns offensive. Why not eat a cockroach? It's probably eaten less sewage. Envy NOT envy. Like you say: they basically have a spine made of shit. Grim AF.

ThighThighofthigh · 16/06/2020 23:23

Imagine a prawn sandwich with mayonnaise or, even worse, cocktail sauce. Eeewwwww it's literally the worst thing in the whole world. I feel ill.

jamandtonic · 16/06/2020 23:38

I wouldn't trust an octopus. Opening jars one minute, world domination the next.

FlamedToACrisp · 17/06/2020 00:14

@ThighThighofthigh

If I clearly understood the parameters of the question I could expand upon my answer.

Do you want to know my emotions regarding axolotls? Strictly speaking an amphibian and a lake dweller. Therefore not sealife per se.

Smile I would be enchanted to hear your emotions with regard to axolotls, and indeed newts, salamanders, frogs and tadpoles.

The dazzling thing about creative writing is that the subject matter is limitless. Although I am currently researching and preparing to write about sea creatures, who's to say I might not be spurred to create a poem about axolotls?

FlamedToACrisp · 17/06/2020 00:18

@jamandtonic Grin it is a constant problem, but on the other hand, could an octopus do a worse job than Donald Trump?
