If you queued for Primark or Sports Direct today, why did you do it?

Just interested as I couldn’t bear it. There are cheap clothes from companies online. What was the attraction?

OP posts:
Losingthechubrub · 16/06/2020 18:03

My sister queued for SD because there was a 50% discount for NHS staff, and her 11 year old has outgrown almost all his clothes after a recent growth spurt. I've only bought a few bits of clothing in eBay auctions over the last few months; lockdown taught me that I don't really need to buy much at all, never spent so little in my entire working life!

Vinomummyinlockdown · 16/06/2020 18:08

The written word .... you all read into it! The OP wrote some words and they have been interpreted in a 1000 ways

Lincsvip · 16/06/2020 18:09

I queued for sports direct because I got 50% discount for working for the nhs. Got some stuff we needed and them some bits we wanted. Was an offer I couldn’t afford to pass up on, would be buying it anyway, so forty minutes queuing seemed a small price to pay for the amount I was saving

Sandybval · 16/06/2020 18:09

@TheWashingMachine ethical is great, if you can afford it. Especially for children, unless you buy second hand not everyone has £20 for a frugi top unfortunately. It's not out of the realm of reasonable that children outgrow clothes within a few months, or that people didn't have a chance to buy their summer clothes before lockdown when we had no idea how long it would be going on for. The competitive clothing list is exciting though, does someone get a prize for having less than that?

Mummadeeze · 16/06/2020 18:12

I can not WAIT to get back in Primark. Everything about being in there, just mooching around, looking at the bits and bobs fills me with pleasure and joy. It is one of my favourite hobbies. Weird or not, that is the truth.

Deadringer · 16/06/2020 18:17

TheWashingMachine you wouldn't be able to buy second hand clothes unless someone else buys them new first. I am not wasteful, i buy what we need, we get lots of wear out of clothes then pass them on. All my family have lots of socks and pants though, so we don't have to do washing more often than necessary.

dustyparadeground · 16/06/2020 18:25

Maybe there was a bit of retail therapy going on? And yeah totally with Deadringer there would be no vintage or pre loved or secondhand anything if someone didn't buy it new

MsMeNz · 16/06/2020 18:32

All helps boost the economy, so spend away 😁 not my cup of tea though. I did queue 40mins to get into IKEA a week after it opened though as I wasn't prepared to spend £30 on delivery of some shelves for pantry when the store is 15 mins away.

Meeeh · 16/06/2020 18:32

Is @Davespecifico married to @leanandmean from the lockdown weight post? They’d make a “lovely” couple 😂

justmakemeacuppa · 16/06/2020 18:37

Because sports direct had 50% off. I didn’t queue but got a voucher for another day which I will go when I don’t have to queue

Tarano17 · 16/06/2020 18:48

@Davespecifico
Shame on you for being so condescending

Celestine70 · 16/06/2020 19:02

I can only think people are bored, I hate shopping.

Jigsawpuzzles · 16/06/2020 19:12

@CorianderLord until very recently I had a visa electron, you can’t use it to shop online with Tesco’s. And I earn 40k a year but had an ex who destroyed my credit, it’s not all black and white. Some cards so not allow online shopping

Jigsawpuzzles · 16/06/2020 19:13

FWIW I didn’t go to either and thought it was a bit OTT with all the queues but each to there own

Aridane · 16/06/2020 19:22

OP, you may not have meant to be snide, but by picking on these specific stores, you are making a judgement.

Er - because the stars OP referenced were the ones the papers reported on!!!

Aridane · 16/06/2020 19:22

(stores, not stars!)

Jigsawpuzzles · 16/06/2020 19:36

No one reported anyone in primark “pushing and shoving though”

Bluntness100 · 16/06/2020 19:40

Meh, some of these comments, she didn’t ask why folks shop at these places she asked why folks chose to go and queue today . Wait a week and it would be much quieter.

I get the point, irrelevant of the shop, no one is that desperate for t shirts and knickers that they need to queue for two hours and can’t wait a few days cmon..

Tubs11 · 16/06/2020 22:52

can you try stuff on in Primark or anywhere else for that matter? Heard that you have to take the stuff home and no likely no touchy.

My guess is that its a mix of people. Those in urgent need of essentials esp for kids I guess and maybe those that aren't currently working and with bugger all to do so its a good way to spend an afternoon

I say fair play to those who went out shopping yesterday - gave me hope that our economy might not go to the wall

I think I would have ventured out to the shops if i didn't have to work

Nevergiveup1980 · 17/06/2020 00:07

Because they wanted to. I wanted to, but sod the 2/3 hour wait. Simple

Itsallpointless · 17/06/2020 00:23

God there's some vipers on this threadShock

I think the majority of people who went shopping on Monday, didn't actually NEED anything, they just wanted to go do some shopping, hey it's been 3 months don't you knowGrin

Good luck to them, thank goodness it wasn't rainingConfused

Tiktokgone · 17/06/2020 00:26

I relaly want to go primark to get some pj bottoms.

I'm fat and I know their XL pj bottoms fit me and are super comfy. All mine seem to have developed stains and holes the last 8 weeks, they're all from Christmas. I also need vest tops to sleep in now it's hot. But I'm scared to go.
They really are the cheapest place with good quality.

Pembsgirl · 17/06/2020 02:36

What a horrible response from Mumsnet members! It's worse than being in the playground, one starts picking on someone, and all the other sheep pile in. For goodness sake, surely we are all grown women, and if you don't like the post, should just move onto the next one, instead of savaging someone for asking a simple question.
