If you queued for Primark or Sports Direct today, why did you do it?

Just interested as I couldn’t bear it. There are cheap clothes from companies online. What was the attraction?

@heartsonacake

Q - 'So, what is it you enjoy about your hobby?'

A - 'You should be grateful I enjoy it!'

WanderingMilly · 15/06/2020 17:37

Sadly I didn't have a chance to queue today as I was already booked up with helping someone else, and I'd promised....couldn't let them down.

Really wanted to go shopping. I would prefer not to queue of course, but with limited numbers and distancing in shops, the queues are just a by-product. And what else are we doing anyway?

No, I don't need anything and don't want to buy anything, but I just want to go shopping! Have missed milling around the shops, the people on the streets....seems like I'm not the only one either, given the pictures on the news....!

CoronaIsComing · 15/06/2020 17:37

For many reasons. Lots of people are desperate for some normality. Lots of parents won’t have had chance to buy their children’s summer clothes for this year, spring was only just beginning when we were locked down. Lots of children with have grown out of or destroyed their trainers as they’ll have worn them more since schools closed.

We went to the school uniform shop today which is directly in between Primark and Marks and Spencers. The biggest queue was for M&S and everyone in it had grey hair so I don’t know why the focus is on cheap shops that young families actually need.

Leflic · 15/06/2020 17:37

Ireally dont get posts like this.

People acting absolutely baffled that others dont behave the same as them!

No where has the Op passed judgement. It was a question about, why? Given the queuing and general hassle involved presumably.
Answer the question or move on.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 15/06/2020 17:39

Answer the question or move on

Hmmm, why do people go to a clothes shop? wracks brain- maybe its because they need clothes?

Just a wild stab in the dark....

Bargainhuntbore · 15/06/2020 17:39

I don’t think it’s anyone’s business why they do it.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 15/06/2020 17:39

I look be Primark - my DD can get cheap, fashionable clothes and the quality is better than some more expensive brands.
I wouldn't queue for hours to get in, but when life is more normal and the queues have died down, I will definitely be heading there first. I've had lovely bedding from there too, which hasn't gone all bobbly, like the more expensive Next stuff.

CallMeOnMyCell · 15/06/2020 17:43

Don’t start a snide thread and then pretend it wasn’t your intention.

Tianalia · 15/06/2020 17:44

The implication is that it is fine to queue for a £600 handbag, but not a £3 t-shirt or some £25 trainers*

I don't think the implication is that particularly. It's certainly not better to be queueing for luxury items which aren't a necessity. I wouldn't want to do either but I can see the Primark queue is likely to be more necessary than the luxury shops queue. And I guess those queues are going to be longer. So there's more photos of them.

MadameMeursault · 15/06/2020 17:45

OP you’re getting an unfair flaming on here. You’re not even judging people. Well I’m judging people, so flame me instead! Anyone who was in a massive queue for a shop today is an utter idiot and needs to get a life! There!

imgardening · 15/06/2020 17:45

I haven't been to Primark but will be going at the weekend. I'm 27 weeks pregnant and I'm desperate for some new bras that are a reasonable price, I have always bought bras there but now I don't fit any. I also would like to see some newborn and 0-3 baby clothes, plus I need some pjs that fit my bump but don't cost the earth.

SixesAndEights · 15/06/2020 17:46

Why mention those, and not any number of other more expensive retail outlets?

For me, it would be because those are the ones I've heard about and seen pics of on Twitter.

I can barely be bothered to queue to get into a supermarket, so I wonder too. Just because I'm nosy!

Cheesypea · 15/06/2020 17:46

Put the news on.

Rodders92 · 15/06/2020 17:47

I would think the 50% discount in sports direct for NHS staff had a lot to do with it. Bought some trainers for work

grisen · 15/06/2020 17:47

The queue outside primark here wasn’t any worse than say HMV or H&M. We didn’t go because we just don’t tend to go to primark anyways, but don’t see why not. I am quite excited to go to my John Lewis store this week, or the next.

JellyfishandShells · 15/06/2020 17:48

My DH went for a walk in the park today but extended it to go into our local large town. Came home saying ' my god, the queues for the shops, the number of other people just walking about, haven't they got anything better to do ?'

I pointed out the pot calling the kettle flaw in his observation...........

MuseumOfYou · 15/06/2020 17:48

My DD (13) saw the ads for Sports Direct (DH is NHS), but when we saw the queues at the retail park, we didn't even park. 50% discount or otherwise.

She needed trainers so we went to JD Sports in town, walked straight in, got served, got an NHS discount and a really good deal. Happy all round.

barbedwired · 15/06/2020 17:53

A huge amount of Primark clothes end up in charity bags.

The charity shops can only sell about 20-30% locally

The remainder is ragged, and sent to whatever country will redistribute it and what's left is landfill.

Most of the rag goes to Africa where it has decimated the local manufacturing of traditional clothes thus devastating the local economies.

The peoples of these areas are poorer for it.

I just feel sick watching people queuing for a cheap piece of clothing. Mass globalisation of the fashion industry makes these huge corps richer and keeps everyone poorer

That's interesting. There's no reports or photos of big long queues of older people. I'm not questioning that it's happening or that you saw it, but the way things are being reported.

Redorange42 · 15/06/2020 17:56

I haven't been to primark today but I intend to in a week or so when it's a bit quieter.

I'm 34 weeks pregnant and really need to get my hospital bag sorted! This means cheap leggings, big t-shirts and knickers etc which would cost me way more if I ordered from somewhere online. I also need some nursing bras. I ordered some from asda but the sizing was way off so I had to return them. At least in store I can look at something in person and estimate whether it will fit me or not.

I imagine other people have rushed there as their children need cheap summer clothes now the weather is better and as other posters have said, there isn't really anywhere online that compares and many people are on a budget at the minute with being on furlough/losing their jobs.

I wouldn't have rushed out first thing this morning but I understand why many people have.

Eckhart · 15/06/2020 17:58

This is an internet forum. If nobody asks for/expresses their personal views, it wouldn't exist.

Leflic · 15/06/2020 17:59

Hmmm, why do people go to a clothes shop? wracks brain- maybe its because they need clothes?

Given there are plenty of places from Facebook selling/free cycle, online shops to Amazon.

ThisShitDontMatter · 15/06/2020 17:59

Or the fact people can get a pair of shorts for £3 and some cheap tees where as online you cannot? Also good for socks :)

101stNC · 15/06/2020 18:05

I went today was queuing for less than 10 minutes max. My child needed summer clothes and I'm on a budget.

Why do you ask?

Is it specifically primark clothes or just clothes in general?

Primark is singles out a lot for being fasr fashion, cheaply made and "disposable" yet they are far from the only retailer that this applies to. Most high street brands follow similar behind the scenes business practices as primark yet its primark that are called out for it all the time.
