Travel mugs- a rant and a plea for recommendations

This definitely falls under the category of First World Problems, but I am SO fed up of spending money on travel mugs only to find out that they leak, spill, are impossible to clean, claim to be dishwasher safe but aren't, make everything taste of metal or continue to taste of whatever drink you've had in them no matter how many times they've been thoroughly washed.
I've bought and discarded several that turned out to be worse than useless and I am now about to go into a meeting with a very noticeable tea-stain on my white top from where my latest purchase has let me down and leaked all over me!

So please hit me with your recommendations for a travel mug that
-Does not leak
-Is dishwasher safe

  • Keeps hot drinks hot for a couple of hours
-You don't need a degree in engineering to figure out how to drink out of it, take it apart to clean it etc.
  • Ideally, one you can drink out of without having to unscrew and remove the lid.

Does such a thing exist?? I don't mind spending money on a decent one if it actually delivers on the above!

Thank you all Smile

The contigo ones are brilliant, you'll get them on amazon

ouch321 · 15/06/2020 11:11

Thermos tumbler. I even use it around the house now.

Cockadoodledooo · 15/06/2020 11:24

I have this one

Have had it at least 3 years and it's used regularly - it has just begun to leak a little through the lid when tipped over if it's v full but otherwise fine. Keeps coffee hot for hours.

Contigo again. I think you can dishwasher the lid, but not the bottom, but apart from that they fit the bill.

Murinae · 15/06/2020 11:30

I have contigo and an Emsa Travel mug and much prefer the Emsa. Available in 0.36 and 0.5 litre. Used it daily now for years and it doesn’t leak at all unless you overfill it. I find the contigo does taste metally but the Emsa doesn’t as you drink from the plastic bit. They aren’t cheap but work really well.

Contigo West Loop Autoseal. Buy the silver one, that’s dishwashable (the paint on the coloured ones comes off if you dishwasher them). It lives sideways in my bag and never leaks.

PaquitaVariation · 15/06/2020 11:33

Contigo. Never leaks and we put ours in the dishwasher without it being an issue. The only problem we’ve had with them is that they keep the drinks too hot. Three hours later you can easily burn your mouth if you’re not careful!

Murinae · 15/06/2020 11:33

Just found this video of it

ProperVexed · 15/06/2020 11:41

Contigo. I could have written @PaquitaVariation post word for word. If I know that I will be drinking my black coffee within 2 hours I make it cooler otherwise it is too hot!

WingBingo · 15/06/2020 11:45

Yep, Contigo. Every time.

villamariavintrapp · 15/06/2020 11:46

Contigo definitely. You can get two packs in Costco quite reasonably. If they're open.

CMOTDibbler · 15/06/2020 11:47

Contigo for me too. I have the silver one so it can go in the dishwasher (I had coloured ones before and the paint comes off, but nothing bad happens, I just lost them eventually). I throw them in my handbag and they don't leak, and they can actually work too well sometimes as your coffee stays very hot.
When I'm travelling for work I'm just as likely to put chilled water in as coffee, and no cross taste

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 15/06/2020 11:47

Contigo definitely.

Back before lockdown, I'd make a coffee, Chuck it in my bag, do a 2hr commute into London by car, train and tube with it rattling around in my backpack. Get to the office, no leaks and still boiling hot.

monday1983 · 15/06/2020 11:48

Nespresso travel mug , doesn't spill and keeps coffee hot for over 2 hours

ElephantGlove · 15/06/2020 11:57

Contigo.

BiddyPop · 15/06/2020 11:58

I use the Nespresso one as well for the past 3 years after a few failures. It's hit the ground (more than a few times) and it still fine. Keeps drinks very hot or cold, but no problem holding the outside. And can be closed up and tucked into a pocket for boarding a flight and then enjoying the coffee in peace as the plane fills and it cools to drinking temp (I fly a fair bit and hate having to chug or chuck a coffee when they suddenly call boarding as they won't let you on with a hot drink - but I figure if it's sealed and won't spill on others as I board, it's fine).

copycopypaste · 15/06/2020 12:00

I use an avex and it's bloody brilliant. Never leaks even when I've dropped it, dented it and it's been upside down in my bag. Had it for years.

endofacentury · 15/06/2020 12:00

Contigo never leaks but can't actually drink your drink for hours it's so hot!
I also have a PE creuset one which is perfect. Don't think it's completely leak proof but drinks are the right temp so can actually drink them

endofacentury · 15/06/2020 12:00

Le creuset that was meant to say

QuestionableMouse · 15/06/2020 12:01

Simple modern.

I have about five (of various types!) and they're all fantastic.

They're metal so are tough, keep drinks hot for ages (I literally made a hot drink before bed once, fell asleep and it was still warm 12 hours later. Ditto cold drinks-- I've had ice last over 8 hours during a very hot shift at work)

okiedokieme · 15/06/2020 12:28

Mine is brilliant, from John Lewis but not their brand. Fully watertight when sealed

BarbaraofSeville · 15/06/2020 13:11

We got the Costco contigo twin pack on a deal a couple of years ago, so quite a bargain.

I like my coffee hot hot hot,so suits me well. Both cup and lid dishwasher safe too.

welcometohell · 15/06/2020 13:44

Thank you so much for all your suggestions. Contigo definitely seems to be the front runner but I will check out the others as well Smile

I love my Bodum travel mug. It has a clip mouth cover as opposed to a slide one. So it doesn't leak
