Travel mugs- a rant and a plea for recommendations

This definitely falls under the category of First World Problems, but I am SO fed up of spending money on travel mugs only to find out that they leak, spill, are impossible to clean, claim to be dishwasher safe but aren't, make everything taste of metal or continue to taste of whatever drink you've had in them no matter how many times they've been thoroughly washed.
I've bought and discarded several that turned out to be worse than useless and I am now about to go into a meeting with a very noticeable tea-stain on my white top from where my latest purchase has let me down and leaked all over me!

So please hit me with your recommendations for a travel mug that
-Does not leak
-Is dishwasher safe

  • Keeps hot drinks hot for a couple of hours
-You don't need a degree in engineering to figure out how to drink out of it, take it apart to clean it etc.
  • Ideally, one you can drink out of without having to unscrew and remove the lid.

Does such a thing exist?? I don't mind spending money on a decent one if it actually delivers on the above!

Thank you all Smile

I was tempted by the Bodum one, especially as it's on lightening deal on Amazon at the moment but it says "not leakproof" in the blurb so that's put me off!

Contigo used to be good but the last couple havent kept things warm at all. Im a fully paid up thermos fan now.

@welcometohell I got my dad a contigo 470ml Byron (blue) for Father’s Day for under £14. I’m hoping it does a great job! I want it in red.

I was going to get this contigo one

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003BI7VBO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_eJZ7EbYKHKG1P?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

As it's been recommended by so many on here, but just looked at reviews on Amazon and quite a few are saying it's not a genuine contigo product. Can't seem to find one in stock anywhere else though. I'm after the stainless steel one as apparently if you get it in a colour the paint comes off.

DH has the thermos direct drink flask and he loves it. It's isn't dishwasher safe but very easy to wash out. He's had it around 6 months and one by one his workmates have been buying them because his coffee stays hot so much longer and it's so useful.
If it hasn't leaked with him you should be safe!!

I have a Bodum one, with a screw part in the centre of the lid (so you unscrew it and it stays in place loosely to allow you to drink). I love it. It's leakproof as you screw the lid closed when not drinking. I put it in the dishwasher all the time. You drink from plastic so no metal taste. Drinks cool down slowly (because of the plastic top?) but stay hot for 3-4 hours ish. And the screw top means you can drink from anywhere around the rim (rather than just a small opening).

I recommend it, if Bodum have offers on Amazon!

@TheBobbinIsWoundUp

Contigo West Loop Autoseal. Buy the silver one, that’s dishwashable (the paint on the coloured ones comes off if you dishwasher them). It lives sideways in my bag and never leaks.
THIS.

I bought a purple one and chucked it in the dishwasher anyway. Yes, the coating came off unevenly, but I used a scrubby sponge to take the rest of it off.

It's now silver and looks brand new.

I recommend Yeti. I got mine in the States but they have a UK website

doctorboo · 21/06/2020 13:03

@welcometohell ooh that looks nice. I’ve just watched my dad take off the plastic branded wrapping which was on the lower 1/2 on his, no idea if the one you’ve linked to would have something similar on it? Could you ask the question on Amazon and see what people say?

Definitely contigo, I have lovely expensive mulberry handbags and have no qualms about chucking my contigo in there.

SpecialHorse · 21/06/2020 13:29

Yeti here too, we're in Canada and they're widely available here but you can order to the UK from the website - I've sent a few to family and friends in the UK as gifts.

I have 2 of the Contigo one Doctorboo showed above, bought in Tesco on a deal a while ago. I fill with boiling water for a few minutes to keep the drink really hot, then fill with coffee.

I also have a Boden one like you described with the flip, and I have never used it since having the Contigo ones

MonkeysandParrots · 22/06/2020 21:11

Another vote for Yeti. Got given one by my US employer, was so impressed I bought my DH one from the UK website.

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 23/06/2020 09:58

I have Contigo and Avex. Bought from Costco and Amazon. Both great, silver ones look better for longer as there is no colour to peel off. Both work brilliantly, coffee made at 7am with milk is still the right temperature for playground duty 3 or 4 hours later. I like the ones with the lockable tops, keeps my handbag safer!
