36 COVID fatalities reported today. We are on the way out of this 🌟🌟

36 reported fatalities today (weekend caveat), the lowest number since the day before lockdown was announced. 77 & 115 the last two Sundays for comparison

Mercifully, the human toll of this crisis is easing

I'm hopeful the trends will continue to improve

As reported by Professor Karol Sikora on Twitter

This is amazing news and surely our schools should be able to open as normal come September!

There is a thread going at the moment which posters believe that the virus was here much earlier - which through family experience I’m inclined to agree with. We just don’t know if the majority of people are actually immune to this already and that’s why we havnt really has any significant spikes at points when people were scared we would.

Despite what people might "believe" the scientific evidence is very much that it wasn't here much earlier and antibody testing has also shown that not very many people have had it. So scientific evidence is very much saying the opposite of what you might "believe".

As for 86% decline in deaths over six weeks, that is of course very encouraging news. However, it must be viewed in context. That decline happened while we were in lockdown. We must wait to see if it continues as lockdown is lifted. It is far too early to be celebrating or assuming that X,Y or Z can happen three months from now, based on where we are at this moment.

New Zealand, which was virus free, now has two cases thanks to travellers from the UK. This is important if we decide to allow travel in and out of the UK, holidays abroad etc over the summer without robust monitoring and testing and tracing. That could well alter the situation here and affect schools in September.

This to me feels very precarious right now and has the potential to go either way. I'll reserve my celebrating until we know everything is working as it should.

Infection rates peaked before lockdown started Hearhooves .

Bluesheep8 · 16/06/2020 13:57

It’s awful for the families that goes with out saying. But we are going in the right direction. This is cause to be positive. The public have done well.

Goes without saying? It doesn't go without saying. What a ridiculous phrase to use in this context.

Bluesheep8 · 16/06/2020 13:58

Let's see what happens to the numbers following the queues outside shops like Primark.

Well hopefully nothing just like Easter, hot weather drawing people out to beaches, riots ect...

Infection rates peaked before lockdown started

Is there evidence to support this or is it an opinion based on modelling?

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 16/06/2020 14:08

@HesterShaw1

Infection rates peaked before lockdown started Hearhooves .
Is that the case? Looking at the graphs here it seems that the peak for daily cases was in April, rather than early March.

No, peak infection rate Hearhooves. Its been extrapolated.

Butt still, even compared to early Aptil, we're CLEARLY now on a downward trajectory.

I hope you'll feel comfortable enough to get out of the house soon.

Mascotte · 16/06/2020 14:27

@Jkslays yes! Great news

I'll feel comfortable to go out as soon as my drs tell me that it's ok.

Let's see things progress.

It’s so obvious that Bluesheep08 is hoping that death rates soar again and so she can have a pursed-mouth I told you moment and state that buying primark pjs kills thousands.....

These people will never be happy until we prevent death from Covid at the expense of everything else.

Jkslays · 16/06/2020 14:52

It’s depressing that people come in to threads where people are trying to be positive and not get engulfed by the misery of COVID and try and dampen down positive progress.

That is the absolute last thing I'm hoping for

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 16/06/2020 15:31

@Jkslays

It’s depressing that people come in to threads where people are trying to be positive and not get engulfed by the misery of COVID and try and dampen down positive progress.
Because it seems very premature to celebrate right now.

Currently, things are heading in the right direction. Is it sustained? Are systems in place to prevent it from rising back up again? Let's wait and see what happens. The danger of celebrating now is in people thinking it's over, and rushing out abandoning all precautions.

Jkslays · 16/06/2020 15:36

Hearhoovesthinkzebras honestly every time some one posts to say something positive your all over it with doom and gloom. Yes we know you’re very pessimistic about it all we know your stance, you keep repeating your self over and over. Can we not have one positive thread? Other people are positive - if you can’t see that maybe this thread is not the right thread for you.

It is positive that the infection rates are falling significantly. It is positive the deaths are falling significantly. It’s amazing that they have found a cheap accessible drug that significantly reduces deaths.

This is a positive thread. Some people need a positive thread. Please stop prowling over this thread to bring it back down to how you are feeling. We all don’t feel like you

Celebrate? No.

Be cautiously optimistic? I think so.

Currently, things are heading in the right direction. Is it sustained?

The charts make it very clear that it is a sustained fall, and has been for several weeks.

HesterShaw1 · 16/06/2020 15:44

And if your doctor told you tomorrow to just relax a bit and go for a walk, it would be good for you, what then?

Jkslays · 16/06/2020 15:45

Here is a graph that shows the actually dates that people died - not the days they were reported on.

It shows a much steadier decline than the daily reported numbers, it just takes more time to collate.

I think this is promising as we know graphs can bob up and down a bit on the reported deaths scale

I don't think Hearhoovesthinkzebras is being pessimistic she is being realistic. It's not over and it will be a very long road before it is. Yes we are moving in the right direction but very, very slowly. There were 200 plus deaths again today. The ONS figures show many more and also found that more deaths are taking place in peoples homes. New infections according to tests are over 1000 a day and according to ONS are around 4000 a day. And hundreds of people a day are admitted to hospitals.
Of course we are making progress but it's slow and with the reproduction rate still about 1 it will continue to be slow.
Yes celebrate progress but its still very important that lockdown is not lifted too quickly. And people still need to follow the guidelines.

HesterShaw1 · 16/06/2020 15:59

No one has said thet think it's "over" Hmm

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 16/06/2020 16:19

It’s amazing that they have found a cheap accessible drug that significantly reduces deaths.

Do you mean dexamethasone?

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 16/06/2020 16:22

@HesterShaw1

And if your doctor told you tomorrow to just relax a bit and go for a walk, it would be good for you, what then?
"relax a bit" has no scientific meaning. If we had a discussion and he explained to me how my risk has changed and that new advice has been issued then yes, absolutely I would go out for a walk, or whatever level of activity he advised.
HesterShaw1 · 16/06/2020 16:23

Yes it's all over the news www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-53061281

Tell us why it's a reason for gloom.
