So am I going to be able to go to Scotland from England for my summer holiday?

Because according to Skyes cottages I can and they want me to pay the balance for my holiday at the first week in august on monday.

Where in Scotland were you planning on going?

TravellingSpoon · 14/06/2020 11:38

Fort William

That's the big question. Similar issue in Wales. I want to book a cottage which is about 30 miles away and the Welsh government might not allow it. Personally I think they will have to cave from pressure from the tourism industry.

midnightstar66 · 14/06/2020 11:40

I imagine by August you probably will yes, if things keep going the way they do

Apolloanddaphne · 14/06/2020 11:42

We seem to be on a go slow when it comes to easing restrictions. We are about 3 weeks behind England I think. I guess in 6 weeks some more things might be open. The risk you take is that not all the tourist spots will be properly open by August. Depends if you are happy to come and just be content with walks.

Watching with interest OP as we usually go and stay with my parents in Scotland for two weeks in the summer holidays.

I can't really afford a holiday without being able to stay with them and I would really love to have a seaside break after eleventy billion weeks of lock down.

AConvivialHost · 14/06/2020 11:46

We have a cottage booked on the Isle of Lewis for the last week in July, no idea if we'll be able to go but not looking likely Sad

Nubbled · 14/06/2020 11:49

Provisional date for hotels reopening in Scotland is the 15th of July. That, of course, could change.

midnightstar66 · 14/06/2020 11:50

The islands might be a different matter. Travel still restricted to residents for necessary trips and obviously easier to enforce.

Bairnsmum05 · 14/06/2020 11:51

As above, proposed date is 15/7. Listen to the scot gov update this Thursday to see if we are going to phase 2 🤞

cologne4711 · 14/06/2020 11:51

We've got a lodge booked in Scotland for the first week in September and are due to pay the balance in mid July. I don't know how we are supposed to know what will be happening in September by then. Anyway we may just give up on the idea and lose the deposit.

Nubbled · 14/06/2020 11:51

Yes, and social distancing on ferries? Nightmare.

sleepyhead · 14/06/2020 12:09

I would worry about getting a place on a ferry if I was going to the islands.

TravellingSpoon · 14/06/2020 13:07

I have read other threads about skyes cottages and how they are being uncooperative in terms of changing bookings and refunds.

The other issue is that it's a 7 hour drive so I had planned to stop on the way somewhere.

We've already got the ferry booked, and they're talking about only running at 20% capacity to enable social distancing on the ferries, but who knows, will just have to wait and see.

copycopypaste · 14/06/2020 16:23

I'm watching with interest.

We're hiring a motorhome last week in July, first week in August. Picking up from Edinburgh so at least they hire company have said if none essential travel hasn't been lifted then we can rebook. But I really want to go, we're happy to eat in the motorhome each day and we're no fussed about restaurants. But we need to know if it's open.

blackteaplease · 14/06/2020 19:04

Also following. We have a flat in Edinburgh 26-30 July and then a caravan near Glencoe for a week. Fingers crossed we call all go onnour trips

buggeroffvirus · 14/06/2020 19:21

We were due to go to the Highlands for three weeks in June but will not be going.
Even though the borders may be open in July and we have been contacted and told we could change the dates to August we will still stay away until next year.
I suspect that visitors will understandably not be that welcome by locals in small villages.
Highland hospitals are small and it is a long way from home if suddenly ill.
We are in the North West and the R rate is still quite high here so I would not like to risk taking the virus with me.

TravellingSpoon · 14/06/2020 22:49

I will try and speak to Sykes tomorrow and see what they say. I dont want to pay hundreds of pounds for a holiday I cannot go on.

My Dad lives in a holiday destination in wales and apparently the police have been stopping holiday makers entering wales, plus the are being really strict with the 5 mile travel radius. He also said that holiday makers or day troopers aren't overly welcome

PaperMonster · 15/06/2020 07:20

We’re at the mercy of Cal Mac and whatever they decide to do re transport to the islands.

rookiemere · 15/06/2020 07:31

I've read in Scotland that the travel restrictions are due to be eased along with opening of holiday establishments on 15th July. Wether that means within Scotland or into Scotland- I'm not sure, but as there is no official border, I think it would be the latter.

I suppose the main issue for Scottish mainland is how welcome you'd be. The Scottish numbers are very low now so you'd think they'd be very welcoming of tourists, but that might not be the case for remote areas.

July - I think - will be an interesting month, we're due to holiday in England which is open and I guess a lot of other people will be as well. By August and certainly September, I would expect all tourism- certainly within UK - to have recommenced.

MrsTidyHouse · 15/06/2020 13:25

Atm, we can only travel five miles, and stay outside to meet. To go from that to normal tourist numbers in six weeks is rather alarming. Most children have been off school and will not return until mid-August. Perhaps that would be a more realistic time for free movement.

rookiemere · 15/06/2020 13:30

Mrstidyhouse if we wait until then all tourism will have lost all summer 2020 income. With numbers at current levels I hope we at least allow tourists within Scotland to travel around otherwise the industry will be effectively finished and UK government isn't going to continue to prop it up once England is open for business.

MrsTidyHouse · 15/06/2020 14:09

Sorry, rookie, I mis-spoke. I meant free travel from England to Scotland. I'd love it if we could travel more freely within the Scottish mainland. What's your opinion on the more remote areas?
