I've chatted to him in the garden and stuff but I'm really worried he won't have the confidence or physical ability to do everything he did before this started once it stops.

There will be so many people in this position. My grandma died last year and in her final years she made herself walk to the shops everyday. She said she knew that if she stopped she would lose the ability to do it and thus her independence.

Drivingdownthe101 · 11/06/2020 21:34

Yes, I mentioned on another thread my 87 year old has completely lost her mobility since lockdown. She used to walk into the village every day, go in the shops and chat to her friends, go to the library etc. She had to stop when they closed the library and taped up the benches.

GoldenOmber · 11/06/2020 21:43

Taping up the benches was fucking ridiculous.

These threads have been a lifesaver over the last few weeks. Thank you to everyone who has contributed and made me feel slightly less insane.

I am so sorry to hear about everyone who is struggling or has loved ones who have been affected. It’s truly shit. Vulnerable people have been left to slip through the system that is claiming to protect them and that is not ok.

I’ve just filled in this survey, I found it extremely cathartic to vent on.

(Although the use of ‘new normal’ in the web address nearly made me pass it over out of sheer spite)

Whyisitsodifficult · 11/06/2020 22:19

We need parents to start protesting on the streets a bit like BLM. Maybe KLM!

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 11/06/2020 22:26

@Cattermole - You’re right. It’s not just your mum, but I think your plan is excellent. I’m starting to hear lots of experiences where lack of access to dr/dentist/secondary care is having a long term impact. I’m still sorry it’s happening to you too. It was obvious this would happen and we’ve all been saying it for ages. I’d rather have been wrong.

We’re also right about the impact of a recession, lack of education and safeguarding, mental health... I’d love to be proved wrong though.

With no eye clinics, hearing clinics, asthma clinics, etc. people will needlessly be losing sight, hearing and damaging their lungs further.

I am supposed to have a check up every six months, glaucoma they increased that to annually, cost cutting. Now it is a lot longer than that since I was tested, I cannot even see my optician. My case is mild others much worse. It is criminal.

justasking111 · 11/06/2020 22:31

I have never been on a protest but am tempted to walk the streets for the children now.

rookiemere · 11/06/2020 22:32

Feeling a bit worried now - was happy earlier on as thought DSs school was going to confirm in their weekly email that S1-S3 would be back at school full time, if not receiving teaching all of that time.

Instead we receive an email - with first paragraph about BLM, well I mean of course they do, but surely our DCs also matter particularly in an email where we're expecting to find out about their schooling - actual paragraph about schooling manages to be both woolly and wordy.

I've got a horrible feeling they've gone around measuring the place and come up with a number that doesn't work.

Plus his report was ridiculous- teacher advises he has not logged into one of his topics - asked DS about it and shrugs oh yes didn't know there was one. Granted DS should have checked, so should we, but I've been trying my best to keep an eye on his school work whilst working and DH has started a new job just before lockdown so can't do much. Would have been nice for someone to mention it to us before now.

Am now shouting at the tv for BBC news. Showing intensive care coronavirus patients - I guess an interview with all those who test positive with no symptoms isn't as interesting.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 11/06/2020 22:35

The annual check up for my parents was just a single question on the telephone from a pharmacist asking if they’re ok. They’d usually have a GP appointment and blood test. If this is considered necessary normally, why not now? They’re probably fine but on a population level presumably they pick up a lot.

Whyisitsodifficult · 11/06/2020 22:36

@justasking111 me either, how do these protests get started?! I’m sure there must be enough parents who feel that our children’s education has been woefully neglected in the last few months.

PickAChew · 11/06/2020 22:38

Just saw that Sunderland, one of the hotspots, just a month ago, has had no new confirmed cases for 5 days running.

This bit of news has made me happy, though the wording about anti-social distancing made me titter :o

I'm not far from Sunderland. Been awful. It's been great hearing the good news though.

justasking111 · 11/06/2020 22:44

On the worldometer Spains figures have not been published since May 26th, does anyone know how they are doing covid wise?

www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/spain/

Laniakea · 11/06/2020 22:50

Teaandbiscuits ... that was therapeutic! Thank you Grin

incognitomum · 11/06/2020 22:50

@justasking111 apparently no new deaths in Spain?

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 11/06/2020 22:53

"government's antisocial distancing" Grin

justasking111 · 11/06/2020 22:54

Wow 17 days with no deaths in Spain that is good news for them.

Shodan · 11/06/2020 22:54

Just doing a late evening check into the new thread.

Nihiloxica · 11/06/2020 22:59

The way Spain are counting their figures now is... interesting.

They appear to be only counting deaths reported in the last 24 hours, but then not updating the figures to count the deaths that were not reported on time.

So a 0 looks dodgy, but their deaths are low.

Nihiloxica · 11/06/2020 23:01

"Anti-social engineering" is very special.

TheGreatWave · 11/06/2020 23:02

With no eye clinics, hearing clinics, asthma clinics, etc. people will needlessly be losing sight, hearing and damaging their lungs further.

That is probably a factor in MIL now being in hospital. If her eye could have been looked at sooner, she may not now been needing eye drops every hour.

Not covid though.

Laniakea · 11/06/2020 23:06

justasking - they have had err "erratic" figures ... there's been a bit of a fuss made about in the FT & amongst statistical people on reddit. The last daily numbers thread on coronavirus had quite a long discussion about it. They seem to be reporting about half (or less) of their deaths atm & at one point 2000 or so just disappeared. There was a good link to it but of course I can't remember where ... this is a recent FT piece though www.ft.com/content/77eb7a13-cd26-41dd-9642-616708b43673

Their excess deaths are even more excessive than ours per capita and they are not accounted for in any way. Spain of course had that awful lockdown where children were banned from going outdoors for months which was so admired by the Dementors (obviously it wasn't as good as the Chinese one but better than ours)!

Laniakea · 11/06/2020 23:13

I don't know how they counted the bodies of elderly people abandoned by their carers. That was possibly the single most distressing thing I've seen in all this.
