Inside Monaco, BBC2 tonight - insensitive?

Am I the only one who thinks that the programme on BBC2 tonight on Monaco is a bit "off" given the job losses/economy etc at the moment! I've seen the trailers for this and my immediate thought was - how tactless and thoughtless it was to show this right now! I understand that people don't have to watch it and can turn off, but personally I really don't think this programme should be shown at a time when so many people have lost their lives, their jobs and livelihoods! Maybe I'm missing the point and this programme is a bit of escapism from the horrid situation caused by the pandemic, but personally it just feels very insensitive!

I've lost my job, I watched a TV show about mega yachts last night. You're not forced to watch it and lots of people find it interesting so I think you're over thinking it.

I've heard it's very dull there, so I'm interested to see what it's like. Although I imagine it will be focused more on the mega rich.

EnterNight · 08/06/2020 14:05

I'd not seen this advertised. Excellent bit of escapism. Set it to record.

It's interesting but almost comes across like a David Brent type mocumentary. The people who fawn over him are monotone (that could be down to not using their first language) and Albert himself comes across as a very dull overweight over serious type. I've always wondered about the stories that his now wife but then wife to be allegedly tried to run to the airport days before their wedding but was forced/encouraged to come back.

rockingthelook · 17/06/2020 19:53

I visited for the day earlier in the year, cheap bus ride from Nice and very scenic, a lot smaller than i thought, but nice to look at the cars, fashion and yachts. Lots of very expensive high rise flats, no space to build on the ground so they go up.Food and drink very expensive, it was good to see this show because it went inside the casino and Hermitage hotel, I couldn't afford to go over the doorstep! The coast line is stunning, lots of other places to visit, love this area , but wouldn't necessarily want to revisit Monaco

You can tell from the poor quality of his jokes that his jokes are always laughed at. He doesn’t strike me as good company at all.

Mrsjayy · 17/06/2020 21:20

God Charlene must have thought bugger this I'm the youngest person here Grin

ArriettyJones · 17/06/2020 21:42
Smile

She should have made a swim for it. She might have got away meet the power of those swimmer’s shoulders.

Meet? Under^ Confused

Inmyownlittlecorner · 17/06/2020 22:13

I’m watching it now & I want to see where the people who aren’t super rich live, cleaners, air traffic controllers etc!

GreyGardens88 · 17/06/2020 22:20

I'm surprised Charlene and Albert aren't divorced by now, though I suppose she doesn't want to leave the kids

GellerYeller · 17/06/2020 22:26

Was there an inference that the locals got precedence over others for jobs? isn't that great for air traffic and harbour control if the less qualified local got first dibs Hmm. We also enjoyed the Princess of two Slices as my DH dubbed her. The Dawn Ward designed Caudwell house programme was great. The 'Elton John threw up over everything in sight' style in that house though. ..and the impossibly young but hopelessly in love honest, girlfriend asking for more bags to fill her dressing room!!! Give Richard E Grant's Hotel Secrets a watch if you like this sort of thing, he's excellent with bonkers billionaires.

MrFaceyRomford · 17/06/2020 23:59

No, not insensitive in the slightest. Amazed anyone could think so. How do you explain all those movies about the wealthy and upper classes that were so popular in the 1930s?

maggienolia · 18/06/2020 07:39

I spent the day there as part of a cruise and it was ok but nothing outstanding , and the food was very expensive.
I remember some brass sculptures in the town - some bears and a male sculpture with a contrasting willy IIRC.
Nothing wrong with a bit of TV escapism though.

Florabella · 18/06/2020 07:49

Not at all insensitive. You could say that about lots of show at the moment. It's just a different world. I have visited and absolutely hated Monte Carlo. A noisy, tasteless concrete jungle. Probably the most disappointing place I have ever been. Enjoyed the programme though. I like have a nosey at stupidly rich people with very little taste 😂

Mrsjayy · 18/06/2020 08:36

Princess of two slices 😂

I think they give locals first dibs at jobs and train them they don't let them crack on with air traffic controlWink

I bet a lot of the normal workers live in Nice or maybe Italy.

Mrsjayy · 18/06/2020 08:38

She should have made a swim for it. She might have got away meet the power of those swimmer’s shoulders.

She would be yelled at come back you are to be my womb wife !

ArriettyJones · 18/06/2020 09:04

😏

LaureBerthaud · 18/06/2020 09:24

The charming people were the hotel workers, the valet parkers, the harbour staff. Good humoured and they seemed to appreciate how ridiculous Monte Carlo is.
The rich folk just seemed vulgar and a bit daft.
Princess Charlene needs to lay off the fillers.
It would have been more interesting if they'd featured Princess Caroline. Wonder if Charlene has to courtesy to Caroline because she's HRH by marriage, whereas Charlene is a mere Serene Highness ...

Mrsjayy · 18/06/2020 09:30

Yeah that is what I was saying to the family it's just all ridiculous and daft but they love their bubble, the woman who was head of housekeeping was just astounded at room prices but she was laughing about it.

ArriettyJones · 18/06/2020 10:00

Wonder if Charlene has to courtesy to Caroline because she's HRH by marriage, whereas Charlene is a mere Serene Highness ...

I thought all the Monagesque royals were Serene highnesses rather than royal ones?

ArriettyJones · 18/06/2020 10:01

Oh you mean the Hanover thing? I wonder.
