@dowser I'm really looking forward to the day they drop the "stay at home" messaging here. The subliminal messages about grassing will hopefully stop then too.

I fucking hate the grassing and tutting. Get it in the sea.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 08/06/2020 00:12

I think we massively underestimate how important being social is and some of the things we are seeing now are a result of depriving ourselves of things that are vital to us. The extremes on all sides are starting to rise and keeping balanced through meeting up, chatting and laughing is really important.

I'm finding it hard that in RL, no one's really saying anything. Not that there is much to say! The smug domestic posting on fb faded off some time ago. Anyone mentioning beaches is snoozed. It's all 10 things challenges or BLM (and I don't like to go wading in to sensitive political territory). I'm not a phone and chat person, I tend to be quite functional and fb came up at the right time for long distance small talk between long distance friends. But that's fizzled through a polarisation of nothing to do or being over busy and I can't get the vibe of who is willing to meet.

DM has ventured out to Waitrose for the first time since March. She's had DB and family round (local, been delivering food) but seemed cool when I said I'd like to see her a few weeks back and the topic hasn't come back up. This fed up feeling has been coming and going for weeks. More coming than going.

Getting out tomorrow will give me a boost for a few days.

Drivingdownthe101 · 08/06/2020 06:49

@Nihiloxica

demonstrations seem to be sensibly done with distancing and many opting to wear masks.

I'm not sure distancing and masks overcome the known risks of spreading the virus at mass gatherings.

I'm good with us taking our chances with the virus, but if we're having mass gatherings I want to go back to choir.

If I have to live in a world of forced mask wearing and obsession with the unbelievably difficult to calculate R number, then I would prefer if people could refrain from mass gatherings.

If thousands of people can meet up to throw statues in the sea, my children should be at school.

(I am delighted about the statue BTW)

I agree with this. People have the right to protest. I get that, and support it. Children also have the right to an education. If one right is being upheld, so should the other.

This. 100%

LivinLaVidaLoki · 08/06/2020 06:58

Can anyone else also remembered the constant screaming of "We are TWO WEEKS behind Italy"
Wish we still were, at least I'd be able to go out.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 08/06/2020 06:59

Remember not remembered.

SeaOtterFluff · 08/06/2020 07:00

I'm struggling this morning. I've been going out to work as normal (nothing heroic, food supply chain) as has DH (lorry driver). And I'm so sick of the whole thing, I am exhausted and don't seem to get anything done at home over the weekend then just lurch from one day to the next during the week. Unoccupied desks are covered in hazard tape and the office is half empty, there are signs everywhere about 2 metres and it's just so depressing. I need a day out in a different place and my teenagers are really, really in need of normality. They've been quite stoic but I'm so angry that they are stuck in the house with nothing to look forward to.

heroku · 08/06/2020 07:23

One of the things I struggle with regarding these protests is that the police seem to be selective about what protests can go ahead. When a bunch of people protested against the lockdown a few weeks ago they were broken up and many were arrested. They weren't spraying graffiti or tearing things down - they were just sitting in a park. Yes, a lot of them were nutty conspiracy theorists, but that shouldn't matter. Either we all have a right to protest or none of us do. We can't be declaring that some protests are allowed and some aren't based on whether or not we agree with them. Surely?

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 08/06/2020 07:25

I wonder how many people are starting to question all this. Mark Drakeford has announced he’ll probably keep the 5 mile rule at his next review and is planning to keep tourism shut this summer except self catering. What does he think will happen to most of wales without that income? Who would come here at the moment? How does bankrupting a country help anything? I’m wondering at what point Westminster will say enough? www.google.co.uk/amp/s/inews.co.uk/news/health/wales-shut-tourists-summer-first-minister-mark-drakeford-2877290%3famp

On a personal level wtf does that mean for us?

Drakeford hasn’t had his Boris ‘Christ’ moment then?

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 08/06/2020 07:39

@drivingdownthe101 I don’t think he’ll have one. He’s not held accountable at all. No wonder he wants to delay the Assembly election in May.

Yeah it's funny how that just went away when it was convenient!
LivinLaVidaLoki · 08/06/2020 07:47

@trustthegenegenie
The media played a blinder on that one....
Constantly showing traumatic scenes in Italy screaming we are TWO WEEKS BEHIND if we don't do as we are told. So we did. It was relentless, every day.
Then they turned a corner and mysteriously dropped out of the news.
There was never any reporting of how things were improving, they just vanished off the radar.

Bollss · 08/06/2020 07:47

What will happen to all those people who work in tourism? I know furlough goes till Nov but employers have to start contributing soon. And some won't be able to. Will there be any point re opening in the middle of bloody winter (if he even allows it then?)

He's being incredibly foolish imo. He is not thinking of the Welsh people at all. He's thinking about the small minority who might die from covid and nobody else. Sad

I know! I remember those bloody pictures and I think that was the only time I thought oh maybe this is gonna get quite bad. And then it didn't. And then Italy recovered. And now we are apparently still at risk of sudden death

They're talking about letting tourists in for summer and were still not allowed in other people's houses. Where has the all important 2 weeks gone?!

rookiemere · 08/06/2020 07:59

That's a very good point about Italy. The scenes from the hospitals were what scared me into believing that lockdown was the right thing to do at that time - and I still think at that point, with what was known the original lockdown was justified.

But if we're two weeks behind Italy and they're now opening all their tourist accommodation and borders again, then surely we should be heading to that point soon. To be fair I think taking things a little cautiously is fair enough so start of July seems reasonable. Any later than that such as Wales is proposing is self serving rather than sensible.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 08/06/2020 08:05

Hello!

Still here. Getting through the difficult days one at a time.

This is such an interesting conversation. I had a look at a friend on FB yesterday who I muted months ago. I think I fancied winding myself up! Or I was interested as to how much she'd be thinking critically about all this as I had an instinct she wouldn't be (HATES the Tories etc) She is someone who I used to respect so much - left wing, compassionate, clever, feminist plus she's got a professional background in working with women who've been abused. She has a serious health problem so I get that she is very frightened but she'd written a pretty long post about people whining and believing a pathetic lie about children suffering for being out of education. Was full of 'this is doing no harm and many children are bullied in school so it's benefitting them.' It was dismissive and frankly she's making a massive error of judgement.

I am not a parent, I have no real skin in the game in terms of children going back to school (except I do as I think it will do economic harm if parents aren't then free to work, plus I care about what's best for children). I also hated school - I was bullied and they didn't pick up on the fact I was being hurt very badly outside of school because they didn't care. I had years of anxiety about attending. I still recognise that many children badly need to go back, that many are developing problems because of being kept out of it and that many are being horribly disadvantaged in ways that will never be redressed. Her position wasn't 'please think of those children who are getting a much-needed break from school' (which needs consideration), it was just aggression and sneering. Is that acceptable? No, it's really not. It's fear-driven and extreme. I will be unfriending. I want to have friends with different views. I do not want to have aggressive ignorant friends.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 08/06/2020 08:06

I wonder what the people who are enjoying lockdown will start to think when they realise that if we can’t travel in July we won’t be going on holiday. If accommodation is open I bet they won’t get refunds. I also wonder what the overlap is between these people and those wanting schools to stay shut? Not so fun watching your holiday flight take off and not being allowed to board it, especially if the money is still missing from your bank account!

I am also so worried about Wales. Much of it is already so poor isn't it? They don't need this, it will cripple them and that damage will be permanent. They also have lots of beautiful wide-open spaces that could be enjoyed safely. It's interesting that people are clinging to their areas staying shut when deaths and cases have dropped so significantly. I never could have predicted that is how people would respond. It's so illogical.

I saw this pop up on a news article on faceache this morning. The amount of comments like "he is the only one with any sense in all this" or "rather him than Bojo". To quote a dementor....I despair
Teateaandmoretea · 08/06/2020 08:08

I’m meant to be going to Wales in mid August. I think it will be fine Smile

ISaySteadyOn · 08/06/2020 08:11

Checking in. I was mia yesterday because we went on a 9 mile walk. It was what we all needed.

And having read the thread, I agree with everything you posted @heroku

Teateaandmoretea · 08/06/2020 08:15

@TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair

It’s interesting that she doesn’t consider the nonsense she is spouting to be ‘whining’ 🤷🏻‍♀️

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 08/06/2020 08:15

I’m usually a Labour voter and I’m not going to be voting for them in wales (welsh Labour is different from uk Labour). Mark Drakeford needs to think beyond 3weeks time and start taking some responsibility for the mess we’re in and how we’re getting out of it. I am happy to pay taxes for a strong public sector and safety net when people need it. Bankruptcy won’t help anyone.
