Was chatting with the headteacher at ds school last week and they think that when the children come back they will all be more "enriched" because of the time spent at home spending quality time with their families.

Bloody hell. Quality time is a week's holiday, not 6 months+ out of school, parents stressed about work (either none or trying to juggle) and no where open to take them.

Drivingdownthe101 · 09/06/2020 08:18
@Drivingdownthe101 I’d go as far as saying that’s abusive at this point. We go for long daily walks and I try to arrange children/family to come over/go there every time it’s dry. We stay outside but children just play normally. None of us has even had a hint of the bug (or any bug for that matter). My dd is dreaming of prison. I’m so fed up of this attitude that children should put up with isolation unless absolutely necessary
I agree it’s abusive.

BarkandCheese · 09/06/2020 08:20

Don’t people who have kept their children unnecessarily at home for thirteen weeks see the damage they’re doing? Doesn’t anyone in their family question what they’re doing? I’m pretty sure if I’d tried that with DD my mum would have turned up on my doorstep politely but firmly insisting DD went out for a walk with her.

Drivingdownthe101 · 09/06/2020 08:22

BarkandCheese this person responds to any suggestions that it’s damaging to children with ‘it would be more damaging to them if their mum dies’. Sadly I think grandparents have a similar attitude, which will be where she got it from I guess!

Nihiloxica · 09/06/2020 08:23

Unfortunately the logic of lockdown is the logic of that abusive mother.

SomewhereEast · 09/06/2020 08:25

In terms of people I know, the parents who are happy to have their DCs home forever are definitely a type - its the ones who always post "They grow up so fast [sad face emoji]" shite on Facebook and don't really have or want much of a life outside their DP & DCs. They're actually quite content to see their kids' world shrink, because they're naturally 'small world' people themselves.

Orangeblossom78 · 09/06/2020 08:25

The vulnerable for the most part wont be teaching them

yes, in fact my child has a new teacher for yr 6 just now as his normal one is off as her husband is shielding. She is in charge of the home school work now.

Orangeblossom78 · 09/06/2020 08:26

They don't want to let go... (the parents) I see

SudokuBook · 09/06/2020 08:26

Just seen a headline that schools “may not open in September”. The dementors will be creaming their knickers.

@LivinLaVidaLoki when you put it like that it’s ridiculous. Pensioners’ leisure activities being prioritised over children.

Despite all the headlines of doom we know that the virus is really only a threat to old people, especially men. Time to keep them shielded surely and let everyone else get back to some semblance of normal. I get that it’s not ideal to tell old people they need to stay at home but why is it worse doing it to them who are actually at risk of harm than kids who aren’t.

Orangeblossom78 · 09/06/2020 08:27

I read it was more from poorer areas they were less likely to send the children back. DS says nearly all of his friends are back (mainly quite a middle class area) except a couple with e.g. severe asthma

MagdaS · 09/06/2020 08:27

And how are those poor children coping? They must have completely withdrawn into themselves, otherwise their behaviour would be dreadful, surely. Mine didn’t do well over the weekend with the weather not being so good.

In normal times a parent who refused to let their children out for 13 weeks would be getting a visit from SS I suspect.

Orangeblossom78 · 09/06/2020 08:29

DH was saying he sees some primary age hanging about by the (busy) road in the area his work is and I see quite a few slightly older ones hanging about in the local skate park. Graffiti has gone up quite a bit too.

Thighmageddon · 09/06/2020 08:29

Morning everyone, I'm going to flaunt myself in town this morning because I santa coffee, a proper coffee instead of the shit stuff I've been drinking for the last 13 weeks.

My ASD ds had an epic meltdown last night, he has mh problems anyway but he refused to speak to me so I'm going to step out and if he wants to scream his head off without me interfering then he can.

Teateaandmoretea · 09/06/2020 08:30

Well to be fair everything is of a certain quality

I’m really really shocked as I honestly didn’t realise people think like this.

I’ve told dd her bff can come round to see our pets in the garden as long as her parents are okay. And that I’ll supervise at distance if they want to go out to play. So it will be interesting to see what happens there as they are back at school anyway Smile.

BarkandCheese · 09/06/2020 08:31

I can’t bring myself to tell DD that she might not be back in September, she’s so desperate to go back. She’s been really good about getting on with her work but I’m worried if she can’t see an end to this she’s going to start wondering what the point is.

Teateaandmoretea · 09/06/2020 08:33

@Orangeblossom78 middle classish area if that makes sense and dd’s school offered places to all reception, year 1 and year 6. 78% have gone back. I think a lot of it is the attitude of the school, so many have made it clear they don’t even want the children Sad. I can fully understand parents being less keen in those circumstances.

Littlebelina · 09/06/2020 08:33

Just submitted a briefing question, hoping mad this morning (and ds is back in school now so have less skin in the game). Fucking government doing what is easy, not what is right.

Bollss · 09/06/2020 08:35

I just don't understand why they can't go back in September?

So we'll be able to do literally everything else but kids won't be able to go to school?

What an absolute fucking joke.

Teateaandmoretea · 09/06/2020 08:36

To be fair trust the genie we don’t know that for certain and September is a long way away right now.

Cattermole · 09/06/2020 08:37

Aaaaand on R4 news this morning increasing evidence that it was around and about in Wuhan late last year.
So what, is this the second wave?
Dementors late to the party there then.... tut tut, where were you in December, hm? Slacking on the job!

Bollss · 09/06/2020 08:38

No no, I know that but even the bloody mention of it is filling me with rage! As if going to Primark or the pub is more important.

And I get it. The economy. I very much want people who work in pubs and Primark to have jobs and actually I would quite like to go to both of those places but, it seems silly we can do that but not educate our kids.

I'm hoping Boris will just make decisions based on public opinion as usual, and by September everyone will be skint and furious.

Teateaandmoretea · 09/06/2020 08:41

What a bizarre article for the bbc to publish Angry

Parents bottle it on phones, 'strictest' head teacher says www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-52969673

MaxNormal · 09/06/2020 08:44

I'm childfree by choice and not that interested in children and even I can see how bloody ludicrous it is that old-man stuff like golf and garden centres is allowed to start up again yet absolutely nothing is being opened for children, and how damaging huge gaping gaps in their education is.

DH has luckily picked up some casual work helping out a friend that does home renovations. Yesterday he accidentally went into the wrong room, a child's bedroom. It was the middle of the day and the child was lying in bed staring at the tv. Utterly unresponsive, he said no flicker of a reaction to either the tv or him briefly going into the room. Really disturbing.
This is what lockdown is doing to children.

glotterbug · 09/06/2020 08:54

Morning all.

I have filled in and returned a questionnaire sent by dd school about them returning (Wales) end of June. Really hoping it does go ahead, dd1 said she would go back to school however different it was, she just wants to get back to normal. I totally agree, if a 7 year old gets it why can't the rest of the population!

Mascotte · 09/06/2020 08:58

From preliminary research, it appears that dementors just "don't trust the WHO report".
